Makayla Timpson growing despite ‘tough' rookie year, will be needed with frontcourt depth limited
INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Fever forward Natasha Howard texted Makayla Timpson before each game during the rookie's junior year at Florida State.
'Happy Game Day. Take the shot you want to take, and if you don't have the shot, rip and go,' read Howard's messages.
Two years later, the Florida State alums became teammates when the Fever drafted Timpson in the second round of the 2025 WNBA draft. Their mentor-mentee relationship has only strengthened since Timpson joined Indiana.
Timpson called her rookie campaign 'tough' and said it's been 'a lot of learning' but tries not to overwhelm herself with the process. The 22-year-old said she's growing in her ability to move without the ball, recognizing the significance of '45 and 90 cuts' and its ability to get herself and her teammates open. Through the difficult transition, by her side is an 11-year-veteran and three-time WNBA champion in Howard.
'She's been leading me the way, guiding me through this process and keeping my head on right,' Timpson said. 'I see the things she does and try to model myself after her and be as successful as she has been in the league.'
Howard sees the resemblance between herself and Timpson. Howard said Timpson 'brings back memories of me rookie year' because of her athleticism, length and vertical ability.
Drafted in 2014, Howard won a ring alongside Maya Moore (Minnesota Lynx) in 2017 and two with Sue Bird (Seattle Storm) in 2018 and 2020. Both Moore and Bird are in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Howard said vets like Moore and Bird made sure 'I got everything.' Whether it's inviting Timpson to her home for a meal or doing TikToks with the Georgia native, Howard hopes to provide Timpson with the same support she received as a rookie.
'I call her my twin. I love her to death,' Howard said. 'I always make sure she doesn't have to pay for anything. When I got in the league, the other vets were making sure I got everything that I need. So, I'm making sure she got everything that she needs.'
Howard often instructs Timpson to be patient and stay intuitive in her first year. Fever coach Stephanie White praised Timpson for staying engaged during practice and consistently working with player development coach Keith Porter.
White expects Timpson to play more minutes with Damiris Dantas' departure to play for Brazil in the FIBA Women's AmeriCup. Timpson played five minutes in the Fever's 85-75 home loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday.
Though Timpson only averages 1.6 minutes per game this season, invaluable time alongside Howard lends White to believe Timpson's future is bright.
'She has a road map right in front of her, and they have such a unique relationship. I think it's gonna continue to help her grow in tremendous ways,' White said. 'Tash has been someone that's connected and communicated with her. It's been fortuitous that they are both here together, and she can help Makayla learn how to be a pro.'
Timpson's personal goals for the year are to 'stay consistent and work hard.' She knows one can't develop without counsel and seeks advice from all Fever veterans, not just Howard.
'I love wisdom. I love hanging around older people. Not saying they're old in that way,' Timpson said with a smile. 'But just getting that knowledge from them, they know a lot. I want to know as much as they know, and they can correct me anytime they can.
'I'm working hard, and I know when my number is called, I'll be ready to impact the game and be a great teammate.'
Howard commended Timpson for 'staying ready' regardless of her playing time. Because of Timpson's commitment to preparation, Howard has no doubt her mentee will excel in the WNBA.
'In this league, she gon' be able to show what she can do,' Howard said.

The Best Tunnel Fits From The 2025-'26 WNBA Season: Week 4
Courtesy of Instagram Caitlin Clark is back for Week 4, and so is the chaotic energy she brings. On Diana Taurasi's birthday, no less, the queen of the technical foul brought her full energy to the court in spirit, igniting multiple scuffles, including two that involved Clark herself. But while the fights stole headlines, the fits held their own. Although, the fights of the week lingered in memory of every social post, so did the style. The outfits this week centered color, structured and form-fitting silhouettes, and a more polished, almost formal vibe—a noticeable shift from the laid-back norm. Below, we've added our favorite looks from week 4 from inside the tunnel of the WNBA. Arriving in style 🔥The Sky are looking for their first Commissioner's Cup win as they take on the Dream at 7-30pm-ET on ION!WNBA Commissioner's Cup presented by @coinbase Courtesy of Instagram Ms. Triple-Double is doing damage on the court, and before she even steps on to it. In a recent TikTok, Angel Reese casually declared, 'Today we are not wearing a suit,' and honestly, it's a refreshing switch-up. And for someone who claims she 'never knows what she's wearing,' we're more than happy to fill in the details. Reese pairs clear, open-toe GCDS heels with matching transparent Chanel sunglasses, rounding out the look with a tonal palette: a light grey cropped utility jacket featuring a curved front zipper, and high-waisted, wide-leg parachute pants with exaggerated ruching. A quiet shift, but a noticeable one. Paige Bueckers — Dallas Wings Courtesy of Instagram It's been a minute since we've seen Paige Bueckers in the tunnel—she'd been out sick—but now she's back, and with more elevated look than usual. Swapping out her go-to denim shorts, but keeping her jersey, she steps into a NAHMIAS Knit 24 Basketball Jersey in black, paired with crisp white tailored pants and black loafers. It's on-theme and maybe a bit on-the-nose—but it works. She finishes the look with a black Coach Soft Empire Carryall Bag 48, customized with 'Paige-ified' charms and embellishments that add a personal touch to the polished fit.

Florida State Football Preview 2025: Seminoles Season Prediction, Win Total Projection, Top Players
Florida State Seminoles Key to the Season Get better offensive line were 134 FBS teams last season, and 133 of them allowed fewer than four sacks per game. Florida State is the one team that didn't. In 2023, the Noles allowed 1.79 sacks per four teams allowed more tackles for loss, only five teams were worse at running the ball, and all this from an attack that was among the best in the country at cranking out big runs just two seasons starts with this. An All-ACC blocker for Wake Forest, the 6-2, 303-pound veteran of four seasons has to be the steadying force for an offense that changes out just about everyone. Florida State Seminoles Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss Top Transfer In: Duce Robinson, WR passing game didn't work. The quarterbacks didn't have time, the rushing attack failed to help the cause, and the receivers weren't able to show off. There were plenty of talent losses, but getting Robinson from USC makes up for wasn't a volume catcher in his first two seasons, but he made huge things happen, averaging over 19 yards per grab. Top Transfer Out: Patrick Payton, EDGE Sr.A future NFL starter, Payton was a key part of the defense over the last three years with 110 tackles, 16 sacks, and 32 tackles for loss. FSU was able to find a few nice options up front to pick up the slack, but they don't have anyone like Payton, who's now off to LSU. Florida State Seminoles Key Game Alabama, Aug. 30After going 1-11 in its last 12 games against FBS teams, no team in college football needs a big Week 1 showing more desperately than Florida State. Pull this off, and everything last time these two met, the hype was high for a good Seminole team coming off a big 2016. This year's schedule is far more difficult than that, but it's not quite as tough as last year's, when FSU played five teams that finished with ten or more Alabama opener is an obvious problem, but the Noles should be, at worst, 3-1 when Miami comes to town. Clemson, NC State, and Florida - FSU closes with three road games in the final four put the win total a tad too low, just because of all the turnover. Florida State Football Preview 2025: The Seminoles Hit the Refresh Button
What happened to Florida State? This isn't actually all that program got caught in an all-time bad break perfect storm at the end of 2023 to miss out on the CFP, made worse by a 63-3 Orange Bowl loss to a Georgia team that could've put up 80+ if it tried, and …Because there wasn't enough horrible luck for that Seminole team, it was the last year of the four-team the hits just kept onnnnnnnn coming. X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN Florida State Offense BreakdownFlorida State Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to SeasonAfter suffering the most brutal of gut punches, Florida State seemingly had a good enough team returning to quickly get back on track. Fully motivated, it all instantly fell apart after a last-second loss to Georgia Tech in Ireland. From there, the bad vibes never went away. Oh, and 2024 Florida State played a way harder schedule than it did the year 2023 team was great, starting with a dominant win over Jayden Daniels and a strong LSU team in the opener, but lost in history was how FSU slipped by Clemson because Dabo's 19th-string kicker biffed the game-winning field goal try in regulation. Also forgotten was that the LSU win and the ACC Championship victory over Louisville were the two victories over teams that won ten games. In all, the 2023 team played seven games in the regular season against teams that went bowling. The 2024 team played 11 - Charleston Southern was the lone outlier - including five that won ten games or more. Three of those were against CFP teams, and one was against a Notre Dame squad that played for the national doesn't mean Florida State should've lost to Boston College by 15, or to North Carolina by 24, or to Florida 20, all at home. And now this becomes a wildly interesting experiment. From 12-1, to 1-11, to almost completely starting over, at least with the starters, FSU is loaded with upperclassmen, it's totally reliant on new guys, and that might be exactly what the program should be between 11 to 15 new starters for the opener against Alabama who weren't part of the 2023 fun or the 2024 pity party. Getting Gus Malzahn as the offensive coordinator was a coup, there's a new defensive coordinator, and overall, the refresh should get everything going again. It might be one of those Mike Tyson "everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth" things with Alabama to kick things off, but there's talent, along with decent depth on the way to a bowl. Remember, FSU has only been to three or those since there's an expanded playoff this time around, just in case head coach Mike Norvell makes it three double-digit winning seasons in four years. But that only happens if he gets a lot more out of his … Florida State Offense BreakdownFlorida State Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season © 2025 The Arena Group Holdings, Inc.
