Nga Kor Ming hails Cabinet move to guarantee matriculation spots for 10A students

Malay Mail5 hours ago

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — DAP National Deputy Chairman Nga Kor Ming has welcomed the Cabinet's decision to guarantee matriculation programme placements for all students who achieved 10As and above in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, as announced by the Ministry of Education (MOE) yesterday.
He said the decision reflects the MADANI Government's commitment towards meritocracy, equal opportunity, appreciation of local talents and the empowerment of young Malaysians in pursuing quality education.
'This inclusive policy, which applies regardless of race or background, recognises the outstanding efforts of our top-performing students.
'The Government is sending a clear message that academic excellence will be rewarded fairly and consistently and every Malaysian is being appreciated,' Nga said in a statement today.
The Housing and Local Government Minister added that the decision aligns with the commitment made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last year and strengthens public confidence in the national education system.
He expressed that the new policy ensures that no outstanding student is left behind and respects the Government's assurance that the existing Bumiputera quota system for matriculation will remain intact, ensuring a balanced and inclusive approach.
'DAP remains committed to promoting policies that celebrate academic achievement while also advancing social equity. We believe that education is the greatest empowerment and tool towards building a fairer, more progressive and educated nation,' he said.
Yesterday, MOE issued a statement saying all students who obtained 10As and above in last year's SPM examination and applied for the Matriculation Programme will be offered places, regardless of race or background.
MOE said the decision was agreed upon at the Cabinet Meeting held earlier in the day. — Bernama

Mounting calls for justice over Cyberjaya student's murder

The death of Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara has sparked an outpouring of grief and outrage online from politicians, activists and members of the public. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : The death of 20-year-old Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara, a University of Cyberjaya physiotherapy student, has sparked widespread calls for accountability and reforms to ensure student safety. Her death sparked an outpouring of grief and outrage online, with politicians, activists and members of the public demanding answers and justice. In a Facebook post, deputy housing and local government minister Aiman Athirah Sabu expressed her condolences and called the murder 'shocking'. 'I urge that the investigation be carried out transparently, fairly and urgently to ensure justice is upheld and the truth is revealed,' she said, adding she was also closely monitoring Sepang police for updates on the case. Maniishapriet, who hailed from Kuching, Sarawak, was found in her condominium unit in Cyberjaya with injuries on her body by a friend on Tuesday. This morning, Sepang police chief Norhizam Bahaman confirmed her death was due to blunt force trauma to the head. 'Investigations at the scene found no signs that her residence had been broken into. Checks on the victim's body found wounds on her head. 'There were no injuries consistent with rape,' he said in a statement. MIC women's leader N Saraswati said students deserve to feel safe where they live and study. 'Immediate and firm action must be taken. Let us honour her memory by demanding and pushing for better protection measures for our students,' she said. Women, family, and community development minister Nancy Shukri also visited Maniishapriet's family during the funeral proceedings at the Loke Yew Crematorium this morning. 'I extend my deepest condolences to the family on their heartbreaking loss. I trust the relevant authorities will conduct the investigation transparently and with integrity so that justice may prevail,' she said in a post on X. Meanwhile, University of Cyberjaya has faced mounting criticism on social media for its silence following Maniishapriet's death. Dozens of comments have been left on the university's official social media pages demanding accountability, with many rallying around the hashtag #justiceformaniisha. Many accused the institution of insensitivity after it posted promotional content in the hours following the incident. 'You were busy promoting the university just six hours ago. What action has been taken?' one user asked. Others described the silence as 'beyond cruel', with many users questioning the safety and management of student accommodation.

Ramasamy at odds with Sivakumar, Thulsi's appt to DAP's CEC: They'll have no impact on Indians

I REALLY wonder how the appointment of V. Sivakumar, the former short-lived human resources minister along with Buntong (Perak) state assemblywoman M. Thulsi to the DAP's central executive committee (CEC) can boost Indian support for the party. I think DAP is finally experiencing the syndrome of closing the gates of the stables after the horses have bolted. Appointing the two Indian politicians will have no significant impact on the party in terms of getting the support of the Indians in the country. Indian support for DAP in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition reached its peak in the 2022 general elections. However, the support dropped in the state elections in 2023 and from then onwards, Indian support for both DAP and PKR declined firther. The recent by-elections provide a good indication of the waning support for the so-called multi-racial parties such as DAP and PKR. As these parties are focusing their attention on the Chinese and Malays respectively, the concept of multi-racialism has been rendered hollow and meaningless. The rise of nepotism in PKR and the appeasement politics of DAP leaders predicated on power, positions and perks have rendered both unattractive to Indians. Appointing Indian leaders without any support base among the grassroots Indians might not ingratiate the Chinese-dominated party to the rank-and-file Indians. It is well and good to argue from the comforts of distance about the heroic efforts of DAP to enlarge its Indian support base. The party has proven beyond reasonable doubt that it cares little for Indians and Malays. These ethnic groups are window dressing for the DAP to reveal its multiracial character. By the way, multi-racialism is dead and gone in DAP or PKR. Indians cannot be lured into this political trap in the future. Indians in the country want both [parties to lead them on the basis of dignity and pride. This is essentially what the United Rights of Malaysian Party (Urimai) intends to do. – June 26, 2025 Former DAP stalwart and Penang chief minister II Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy is chairman of the United Rights of Malaysian Party (Urimai) interim council. Malaysia Eyes RM500 Mln In Landscape Exports To Singapore By 2026

JOHOR BAHRU, June 26 (Bernama) – Malaysia is targeting RM500 million in landscape product exports to Singapore by 2026 through strategic bilateral cooperation, said Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. He said the target is achievable with careful planning and strong diplomatic ties between the two countries. "This potential must be developed and accelerated. Later today, I will be visiting Singapore to meet my counterpart to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the landscape and urban development sectors," he told a press conference here today. Nga was speaking after attending the launch of National Landscape Day 2025, officiated by Che Puan Mahkota Khaleeda Bustamam, wife of the Regent of Johor. Also present were Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor. Nga said he would meet with Singapore's Minister for National Development Chee Hong Tat and Education Minister Desmond Lee, who previously held the national development portfolio. The MoU will not only cover the landscape sector but also include cooperation in smart city development, housing, urban renewal, public parks, and smart home concepts. He noted that this initiative follows Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's recent visit to Malaysia and aligns with key priorities under his ministry. Johor is expected to benefit the most from the partnership due to its strategic location and logistics advantage.
