Footage reveals moment boat crashes into passenger ferry in fatal Clearwater collision

Independent29-04-2025

Footage captured the moment a boat slammed into a passenger ferry in Florida, killing one person and injuring 10 others.
There were 45 people on board the 40-foot passenger ferry Sunday night when a 37-foot private vessel, with six passengers on board, plowed into the stern at around 8.40 p.m. local time. Jose Castro, 41, of Palm Harbor, Florida, has now been named by police as the passenger who died in the crash.
Police have also released video taken from a live webcam at Coachman Park along the waterfront, which shows the private boat heading straight toward the ferry while it travels eastbound in the channel. The video captures the boat striking the ferry from behind and landing across the majority of the vessel's stern.
'Mayday, mayday, mayday! There's been a boat collision. The Clearwater ferry, underneath the Clearwater Memorial Causeway. The Clearwater ferry is adrift,' a caller was heard stating to the U.S. Coast Guard in a newly released audio clip. Passengers on board the ferry had been returning from Clearwater Beach, where the Sugar Sand Festival was being held.
Clearwater Police Department chief Eric Gandy said at a press conference Monday evening that the boat 'overrode nearly three-quarters of the ferry' during the collision.
"Even before the first responders arrived on the scene, we knew we were dealing with a major situation,' Gandy said. 'Our 911 call takers could hear what they described as horrific screaming in the background."
Pictures of the wreckage following the incident revealed the extent of the damage.
'Both boats were fully entangled, and a large amount of damage resulted to the ferry boat as a result,' Major Evan Laskowski of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission explained.
With emergency workers arriving on the scene, EMS chief for Clearwater Fire Rescue Tony Tedesco said the 'mass casualty incident' became hard to manage because of the sheer number of casualties.
'We had great good samaritans who were bringing people in,' he said. 'So you could imagine being on scene with only a few personnel, and being inundated with probably 30-40 people at a time coming towards that basin, all on different boats... and us having to sift through that. It was definitely a challenge.'
Ten people sustained injuries in the crash, six of whom were listed as trauma alerts, and two were airlifted to hospital. BayCare Health System said all but one had since been treated and released.
Chief Gandy praised the 'life-saving efforts' of a ferry crew member who played a pivotal role in helping those on board the vessel.
The boat fled the scene after the crash, but Pinellas County Sheriff's Office officials tracked it down roughly three and a half miles south of the Clearwater Memorial Causeway Bridge, where the collision occurred.
The boat's driver is co-operating with the investigation being led by the U.S. Coast Guard and the FFWCC, authorities said. He voluntarily submitted to a breathalyzer test, police added, but no alcohol was found.
The officials offered their condolences to the family of Castro and said that more information would follow the investigation.

11 hospitalized, including 2 kids, after boat explosion in Florida

Nearly a dozen people, including two children, were hospitalized after a boat explosion and fire in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Memorial Day evening, officials said. The incident was reported around 5:45 p.m. Monday near the New River Triangle, not far from the Lauderdale Yacht Club on Southeast 12th Court. U.S. Coast Guard officials said there were 13 people on board the boat when there was an explosion. 'For reasons that we don't know yet, a boat exploded, it tossed people into the water, good Samaritans came over right away and started rescuing them,' Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesman Frank Guzman said. 'It's too soon to know how this happened. We have a fire investigator on scene, as well.' Footage from a surveillance camera captured the moment the fireball erupted on the boat, and showed multiple people spilling into the water. Guzman confirmed there were 11 patients, including two children, who were initially taken to Broward Health Medical Center. 'A number of the patients had significant burns and are being transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where they have a burn unit,' Guzman said. 'A lot of them had burns to much of their body.' Officials at Jackson Memorial said they received 10 patients, including eight adults who were in good condition and two children who were in fair condition. One patient had to be intubated. Antonio Rivero said he was with family members on the boat when it went up in flames. 'Tried to fuel up the boat, and must have been a gas leak and, you know, spark went off and explosion,' Rivero said. 'One of the guys' pants were blown off, so it was bad.' Rivero, 32, suffered burns to his arm, but his wife, Cassandra, and their two children remained hospitalized Monday night. 'They're OK because they're on a lot of meds, but other than that they're fine,' he said. At least one witness reported seeing an explosion and said they saw multiple people with burn injuries who were brought to the yacht club docks. The victims had burned legs and bathing suits that appeared ripped and burned to shreds, the witness said. Two other witnesses said they were on a dinghy at the sandbar when the boat exploded. 'When they went to start their boat up, it just exploded. There was a huge fireball and people were kind of falling off the boat,' Bret Triano said. 'We were at the sandbar too and we just tried to go help out.' Triano and Marisa Toomesn were able to rescue some of the victims. 'There were a couple boats trying to pick people up and one guy just didn't get picked up so we went over to him,' Triano said. 'He was screaming.' 'He was burned pretty badly,' Toomesn said. 'He was saying, 'Save me. Please, don't let me die. I'm so hot, I need water,'' Triano said. 'He just kept repeating, 'I want water, I want water.'' Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed Fort Lauderdale Police, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Broward Sheriff's Office assisting Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue. Crews were seen examining the boat involved, which was tied up to a nearby sea wall. Guzman said crews also rescued a dog that had been on the boat that wasn't injured. The FWC and fire officials will investigate the cause of the explosion.

One dead and two injured after sewage boat explodes on river

The fatal explosion occured just a week after a Mexican Navy vessel collided with the Brooklyn Bridge, resulting in the deaths of two crew members and injuring nearly twenty others One man has died after an explosion on a boat carrying raw sewage that was docked on the Hudson River in New York City on Saturday morning, authorities said. The tragic explosion just off Henry Hudson Parkway near 138th Street, resulted in one fatality and left two others with injuries. The incident unfolded around 10:30am on Saturday aboard the New York City-owned motor vessel "Hunts Point", city Fire Department Deputy Assistant Chief David Simms said at a news conference. ‌ The men on the boat were doing work involving a flame or sparks when the explosion occurred, the U.S. Coast Guard said on social media. On arrival, FDNY crews were met with the aftermath of a substantial blast in the ship's hull. The boat takes raw sewage to be treated, Simms said. The explosion happened near the North River Wastewater Treatment Plant. ‌ First responders answering a 911 call found a 59-year-old man unconscious in the river, and he was declared dead at the scene, New York police said. His name has not been released, but the New York City Department of Environmental Protection said the man had worked for the agency for 33 years. DEP Commissioner Rohit T. Aggarwala described the man in a statement as "a valued and experienced member' of the agency. The blast spread raw sewage over the deck of the boat, and firefighters and other first responders had to be decontaminated, Simms said. DEP said there did not appear to be any environmental impacts following the explosion, reports the Mirror US. The barge, operated by the Department of Environmental Protection, was transferring untreated sewage to a treatment establishment when the explosion happened. Hazardous material units were called in to cleanse the craft, assess methane gas levels, and manage sludge and oil spills in the river. ‌ Despite the horrific circumstances, Mayor Eric Adams announced that no criminal activity was suspected, and that the facility remained unaffected by the event. "This devoted public servant gave 33 years of service to New York City, and our hearts go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this painful time," Adams remarked about the employee who passed away. He further noted: "We are committed to fully supporting an investigation and ensuring that every possible measure is taken to prevent such tragedies in the future." The Bureau of Fire Investigation is on the case to find out what caused the explosion. The U.S. Coast Guard for NYC and the Tri-State area hinted on social media that the blast was "reportedly linked to hot work aboard a docked boat. The deadly explosion happened just one week after a Mexican Navy vessel smashed into the Brooklyn Bridge, causing the deaths of two sailors and injuring close to twenty other people.

Florida woman killed by alligator during canoe trip as husband desperately tried to save her

A woman canoeing with her husband has been killed by an alligator after they accidentally rowed over the animal. It then attacked her and is believed to have 'thrashed' around in the water A woman tragically lost her life after an alligator attacked her while she was canoeing with her husband. The horror incident happened in Florida near the mouth of Tiger Creek at Lake Kissimmee on Tuesday, May 7 when she and her husband accidentally rowed their boat over the reptile, according to officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. ‌ The couple's canoe passed over the gator, which then "thrashed" around, causing them to capsize and fall into the water, FWC Major Evan Laskowski informed reporters at a press conference on Wednesday. ‌ The 61 year old woman landed on top of the animal and was bitten, Lawkowski revealed, adding that her husband attempted to rescue his wife from the jaws of the beast but was unsuccessful. In radio transmissions from the Polk County Sheriff's Office, obtained by WKMG, an official can be heard saying: "The gator grabbed her out of the canoe. [Her husband] tried to fight the gator off. We're at the last place he saw her. He left the paddle here, where he last saw her," reports the Mirror US. The woman's body was eventually spotted by a sheriff's office helicopter, and members of the FWC were able to retrieve her from the water, according to officials. Later that same night, a contracted nuisance alligator trapper contacted FRW officials, reporting that they had trapped an 11" 4 inch alligator that matched the description of the gator suspected of killing the woman. Authorities captured a substantial alligator, between 10 to 11 feet in size, on Wednesday though it remains unconfirmed if this was the animal behind the recent attack." ‌ Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this tragedy," expressed FWC executive director Roger Young during the press briefing. "While alligator attacks that result in fatalities are rare, this serves as a somber reminder of the powerful wildlife that share our public spaces. ". In a chilling repeat incident, another alligator had previously bitten a woman near the same Floridian creek just days earlier. The woman was out kayaking with friends when she was suddenly attacked by an alligator, which bit her elbow. She was airlifted to Osceola Regional Medical Center and her current condition is unknown. Alligator expert Brandon Fisher told ClickOrlando the alligator may have felt threatened as it is currently breeding season. He added: 'They are apex predators and will defend themselves. If you're out on a kayak, canoe, or boat, you just have to be aware of your surroundings and not approach these animals. It's Florida, we know there are alligators, and it's bound to happen at some point. Unfortunately, accidents happen, and we never want to see this happen for either party.' Despite the clear danger, alligator encounters leading to harm are surprisingly uncommon in Florida, known for its large alligator population. The FWC releases figures showing an average of only eight unprovoked alligator attacks annually statewide.
