Just a week before New York City's primary election, the city's comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander is the latest elected official to be taken into custody by federal immigration officials who are ramping up large-scale arrests outside immigration courtrooms across the United States.
The democratic candidate is running to be the city's next mayor, aiming to succeed incumbent Mayor Eric Adams.
On Tuesday, federal agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested and detained Lander at an immigration court as he was 'escorting' a person out of a courtroom, according to his campaign as reported by the Associated Press.
Video posted on Bluesky shows Lander's detention inside 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan as he tried to walk a man out of immigration court, and is forcibly removed by masked federal agents as Lander calmly asks 'Do you have a judicial warrant? Show me the warrant.'
ICE is a federal law enforcement agency housed under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. DHS said on X that 'Lander was arrested for assaulting law enforcement and impeding a federal officer.' The social media post also said 'No one is above the law, and if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will face consequences.'

Last Thursday, Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla of California was forcefully removed from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's news conference in Los Angeles and handcuffed by federal officers as he tried to speak up about immigration raids prompting LA's recent protests and those across the nation.
Widely circulated video of that incident showed a Secret Service agent on Noem's security detail grabbing Padilla by his jacket and shoving him, after the senator interrupted her news conference.
Speaking on the comptroller's official YouTube channel, Lander's wife, Meg Barnette, also a lawyer, said Lander was still in custody Tuesday afternoon at the time of this writing and ' What I saw here today is not the rule of law,' per NBC New York.
It remains to be seen—if the increasingly aggressive behavior of ICE agents who have targeted not only immigrants, green card holders, but now are arresting American citizens and elected officials—is legal.
Who is Brad Lander?
Democrat Brad Lander is New York City's 45th comptroller and has held the position since 2022. According to his campaign website, he is currently running for mayor 'to deliver a safer, more affordable, and better-run New York City.'
Lander is a self-described 'dad, Brooklynite, and a lifelong public servant who has spent his career solving New Yorkers problems — first as an affordable housing leader, then in the City Council, and now as NYC Comptroller.'
According to his campaign site, his priorities include: ending street homelessness for people with serious mental illness; solving the city's affordability crisis by building affordable housing, freezing the rent, increasing homeownership, expanding free child care and afterschool programs; and delivering a better run City-government by cleaning up corruption.

St. Paul man pleads guilty in repeated assault of woman at his apartment
A 22-year-old St. Paul man pleaded guilty on Monday to his role in the assault of a woman at his apartment earlier this year, according to court documents. Jabari Quentin Junior was originally charged in January with one count of kidnapping to facilitate a felony or flight, one count of kidnapping to commit great bodily harm, one count of first-degree assault with great bodily harm and one count of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. As part of the plea agreement, all other charges aside from the first-degree assault charge will be dropped at Junior's sentencing, which is scheduled for Oct. 1. He could be sentenced up to 20 years in prison. Charges say a Junior repeatedly assaulted a 19-year-old woman between Jan. 27 and Jan. 29 at his apartment. The two allegedly got into an argument over claims she was texting other guys, which is when the dayslong assault began. The woman's wounds were so severe that she wasn't able to see from her right eye, according to the criminal complaint. She suffered from burns to her face, arms and torso. She also had a stab wound on her leg. On Jan. 29, Junior walked his victim to a bus stop on Wabasha Street and Fillmore Avenue in St. Paul, according to charges. There, he called 911 and handed the phone to her. Junior allegedly asked her to lie about her injuries, but ran back to his apartment when he heard sirens. While talking to police, Junior claimed that on Jan. 27 the woman came over with the marks on her body and he let her use his phone. Junior claims that's when he found she was texting with other guys, charges say. He allegedly pushed her and was scratched by her. Charges say Junior told police he accidentally stabbed the woman when tending to one of her injuries. Richard Sherman is formally charged with DUI following February 2024 arrest
More than a year after he was arrested for DUI, former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman officially has been charged. Via Brady Henderson of a spokesperson for the King County Prosecuting Attorney said Tuesday that a formal charge has been filed, after the Monday receipt of blood-test results from the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab. Advertisement The test showed that Sherman had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.11 percent, which exceeds the legal limit of 0.08 percent. The charge is a gross misdemeanor, which was enhanced by Sherman refusing a breath test. On the surface, it seems unusual that it would take more than 16 months for the blood sample to be tested. The prosecutor's office told Henderson that a protracted delay is not uncommon, given the capacity and increased caseload of the lab. Sherman spent 11 years in the NFL, playing for the Seahawks, 49ers, and Buccaneers. He currently serves as an analyst on Prime Video's Thursday Night Football.
