Driver killed, truck hits historic building in Death Valley National Park
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A truck driver died Tuesday when a tractor-trailer rig ran off the road and into a building in Death Valley National Park, officials said on Wednesday.
The single-vehicle crash scattered debris and left diesel fuel on CA-190 between Stovepipe Wells and Towne Pass, closing the main road through the park for about 22 hours. The road reopened at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
The crash was likely caused by a brake malfunction, officials said. CA-190 has long, steep grades on both sides of Towne Pass, and truck fires have been a problem recently. An electrical contractor truck burned after descending Towne Pass on April 9. Six commercial trucks and one fifth-wheel RV caught on fire below Towne Pass in 2024.

The truck collided with the historic stone Emigrant Ranger Station, built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It hit the building's porch, destroying two stone columns, damaging the roof and breaking windows, park officials said.
Stan Jones wrote the song 'Ghost Riders in the Sky' while living in the building and working as a park ranger in 1947, officials said. The building hasn't been used for several decades.
A hazmat team worked overnight to clean up the spill. The truck was carrying a load from a mine in the Searles Valley

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTNH) — The Middletown Police Department is installing speed cameras on Washington Street and Camp Street, the department said in a release Monday. This is part of the city's initiative to enhance road safety and reduce speeding. The cameras are now active, recording the eastbound and westbound lanes of both streets. Man charged with DUI after allegedly driving wrong way on I-91 in Enfield In accordance with Connecticut state law, there will be a 30-day warning period. During this time, motorists who exceed the posted speed limit will receive warning notices instead of citations. Once those 30 days are up, citations will be issued to drivers exceeding the speed limit by the automated enforcement system. Highway robbery: Scammers bring back classic scam
(WHTM) — Ever get a text message saying you owe money for a toll? The messages know how to get your attention. They claim you have an outstanding traffic ticket and that if you don't pay immediately, you'll lose your registration and driving privileges. That got drive Scott Ruby's attention. 'I know that they can be awfully confusing to people, especially my age, who take this stuff for truth,' Ruby said. As summer returns, so does this infamous scam. States are warning drivers they will never text demanding money. The bottom line: Don't respond to unsolicited texts. Easy enough for Ruby — 'I owe so much that I ignore them anyway.' If you're ever unsure, call the state's agency directly at its official number to verify. Find more stories on Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Nevada DMV, NDOT warn of ongoing phone scam targeting drivers
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – After receiving several calls from the public regarding an ongoing driving fee scam, the Nevada Departments of Transportation and Motor Vehicles are asking residents not to respond to the text. Several versions of the scam have been seen across the nation throughout the year. The most recent text scam falsely claims to be from the DMV and that the recipient has an outstanding traffic ticket. The text then asks that the recipients click through to a website to pay and references toll booth fees. NDOT and the DMV want to remind residents that Nevada does not have tolls on public roads, and any claims of toll road fees in the state of Nevada are illegitimate. Some other indicators within the scam messages include a reference to State Administrative Code 15C-16.003, which does not exist. NDOT does not issue traffic or parking citations. The Nevada DMV will also never contact youabout penalties via text message. They will only contact you via mail or email. If you receive a text, do not click on the link and delete the message. Using the phone's 'report junk' feature is an additional option., The Federal Trade Commission offers online resources to recognize and report text and otherscams Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
