Palanivel A Wise Figure, Always Calm In Handling Issues
KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi described former MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel, who died yesterday, as a wise figure adept at handling various issues, whether in the ministry or within the party.
Ahmad Zahid said Palanivel, who once served alongside him in the Cabinet, made significant contributions not only to the Indian community but to Malaysians in general.
'I deeply appreciate his services and contributions to all Malaysians, particularly the Indian community in this country.
'He was my friend in the Cabinet and a remarkable personality. He was calm and handled issues in the ministry and party matters with great wisdom,' he told reporters after paying his last respects at Palanivel's residence here.
Meanwhile, Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail described Palanivel's passing as a significant loss, especially as both had worked together in the Cameron Highlands parliamentary constituency.
'Datuk Seri G. Palanivel was a friend and colleague. We worked together in community initiatives when he was the Cameron Highlands member of parliament in 2013, while I was the Jelai assemblyman and a state executive councillor,' he said.
He said Palanivel contributed significantly to efforts to improve the living standards of local communities in Jelai and Cameron Highlands.
Palanivel, 76, died at 8 am yesterday at Kuala Lumpur Hospital, leaving behind his wife, Datin Seri P. Kanagam, and four children.
Born on March 1, 1949 in Penang, Palanivel began his career in 1973 as a research officer at the National Museum under the Bujang Valley Project, before joining the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as a senior journalist in April 1977.
In 1984, he served as a sub-editor at the Economic Service and later as news editor of general news, before being seconded as press secretary to then Works Minister Tun S. Samy Vellu from 1987 to 1990.
Palanivel had been active in politics through MIC since the early 1970s and contested his first General Election in 1990.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that the individual set to be charged alongside two Sabah assemblymen in connection with a corruption case involving mineral mining licences is not protected under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010. Its Legal and Prosecution senior director, Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin, said Section 11(1) of the Act clearly states that anyone involved in the offence they report is not eligible for protection. 'If a person is involved in the wrongdoing, they are not protected under the Act and therefore cannot be considered a whistleblower,' he told Bernama today. He said to qualify for protection, a report must be made in good faith to a recognised enforcement agency such as the MACC, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), or other authorised government bodies. 'Reports made with malicious intent, such as to seek revenge or defame others, do not meet the criteria for protection,' he added. Wan Shaharuddin also stressed that a key requirement under Section 11(1) is that the whistleblower must not be complicit in the wrongdoing being reported. If found otherwise, any protection granted may be revoked. 'This is to preserve the integrity of the whistleblower framework and prevent it from being misused as a 'shield' by those trying to escape accountability,' he said. Earlier, the individual's lawyer claimed his client was a whistleblower who had cooperated with authorities, but was later informed he would be charged in court on June 30. Recently, several video clips allegedly featuring conversations involving certain individuals and Sabah elected representatives discussing corrupt practices linked to mineral mining activities went viral on social media.

PM calls for revival of reading culture to uplift nation
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on Malaysians to revive the spirit of reading, emphasising its crucial role in nation-building and advancing knowledge. He said without a commitment to lifelong learning through reading, the country cannot hope to compete globally or improve its command of language, knowledge and technology. "We have inherited a proud and remarkable civilisation. It is our generation's responsibility to pursue knowledge diligently as well as shape values, character and integrity, to elevate the dignity of our people and our nation," he said. Speaking at the opening of the Malaysia Madani Nationalism Seminar, themed 'Teachers as Catalysts of Patriotism', Anwar said reviving a reading culture is essential to producing well-informed, morally grounded citizens, a goal that requires unity, collective effort and a shared commitment to justice. He noted that simply distributing books is no longer enough to foster interest among younger Malaysians, who are increasingly drawn to social media. "This is not a new problem," he said, citing an American social critic, Allan Bloom, who warned as early as the 1980s, in his book 'The Closing of the American Mind', that interest in reading was already in decline. Anwar said that national pride should not be measured solely through material development, but also through enduring human values. "We may achieve progress, but without a sense of humanity, it is incomplete," he said. More than 1,000 educators attended the seminar, including retired teachers, teaching professionals from Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, as well as teacher trainees from the Teacher Education Institutes.
