Slow-moving downpours return on Thursday!
Tonight features mostly clear skies, which once again will still be a bit hazy at times with smoke visible in the sky from Canadian wildfires. That should create a really nice sunset tonight again! The humidity will be noticeable once again as a southerly breeze continues to usher in warm and moist air with low temperatures near 60.
Thursday provides the risk for a few pop-up showers and storms in the atmosphere as an approaching front combined with heat and humidity provide garden-variety downpours. Although severe weather is not expected, storms will be slow-moving with slow upper level winds present and will be efficient rainfall producers with the atmosphere loaded with moisture. Very localized heavy rainfall is possible. Many towns will remain dry as these storms will be small and isolated generally with high temperatures in the low 80s.
Friday sees a slow-moving cold front approach the region by the afternoon, which will provide scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. Thunderstorms will once again not be moving quickly, and therefore will be capable of producing locally heavy rainfall. Some of the stronger thunderstorms that pop up will be capable of producing small hail and gusty winds. There will be some dry time between thunderstorms, but it's an unsettled day, especially by the afternoon, with highs near 80 degrees.
Saturday will be an unsettled day once again with scattered showers and storms likely as an area of low pressure moves along the aforementioned front that will still be near the region. As a result, the day will provide scattered thunderstorms that once again produce locally heavy rainfall, along with small hail and gusty winds in some of the stronger storms. Clouds will be a bit more abundant than on Friday, which will pin high temperatures down into the mid 70s.
Sunday sees Saturday's system scoot down to our south and stall along the North Carolina/Virginia border. The close proximity of that front to our region means we will still see the risk for a couple of showers with high temperatures in the mid 70s. The best chance for a few showers will be down across our southern counties toward Virginia closer to where that boundary will be.
Monday returns the risk for a few scattered storms with another front approaching. As a result, a few scattered thunderstorms are a good bet with highs near 80. There will be plenty of dry time but storms again could produce locally heavy rainfall.
Tuesday sees yet one more system cross before we begin to dry out midweek. Scattered storms once again can be expected as a result with high temperatures in the upper 70s.
Wednesday finally sees our unsettled pattern break with high pressure pushing into the region, which will usher in drier air. Mostly sunny skies can be expected with high temperatures in the upper 70s.
Looking ahead in your extended forecast, there is no real sign of any big cooldown. Another dry day with high pressure in control on Thursday will be followed by isolated storms on Friday before another front crosses on Saturday, providing the risk for a few storms. High temperatures will be near 80 on Thursday with low 80s expected Friday into Saturday.
