‘Act of love'? French woman who burned grandfather alive gets five-year prison sentence
BOURG-EN-BRESSE (France), June 26 — A French woman who burned her bedridden grandfather alive by setting his mattress on fire was given a five-year prison term on Wednesday, with four years suspended, after prosecutors appealed a previous sentence they deemed too lenient.
In October 2024, a court handed Emilie G, 33, a five-year suspended sentence after she admitted to killing her grandfather, describing it as 'an act of love' to end his suffering.
Prosecutors appealed the ruling, arguing she killed the 95-year-old as frustrations piled up in her personal life and requested a 15-year jail term — the same sentence sought in the first trial.
But the court stopped short on Wednesday, sentencing her this time to five years in prison, with four years suspended. The remaining year will be served under house arrest with an electronic tag rather than in prison.
During the trial, prosecutor Eric Mazaud argued that killing her grandfather was 'not an act of love', as she described it.
'When you love someone, you don't burn them,' he said at the court in the eastern town of Bourg-en-Bresse.
The victim was found dead from severe burns and smoke inhalation in his bed in August 2020.
His granddaughter expressed regret during the appeal hearings which opened on Monday but was unable to explain why she chose to burn him alive.
'He did not have a death worthy of his life... fire is atrocious, it is inhuman,' she said on Tuesday.
During the first trial, Emilie G., who experts said suffered from depression, said she was overwhelmed by caring for her grandfather while raising her children and dealing with a faltering romantic relationship.
On the day her partner revealed he had been unfaithful, she poured gasoline on her grandfather's mattress and threw a burning sheet of paper on the bed before fleeing the room.
Prosecutor Romain Ducrocq during the first trial argued that Emilie G. killed her grandfather to 'exorcise her frustration and multiple failures'.
But the defendant said that she acted to end her grandfather's suffering, someone she had cared for and viewed as a father figure.
She insisted her grandfather asked her to kill him several times including in the month before his death after she found him lying in his own excrement. She said she did not tell other family members.
The court said it acknowledged the man's 'weariness', but concluded that at no point 'did he express an explicit request for active assistance in dying'.
The presiding judge Raphael Vincent said he considered the 'extremely serious' acts to be 'in no way a reasoned act of euthanasia'.
According to a psychiatric report, she was in a 'dissociative state' at the time, which was said to 'impair her judgment'. — AFP

The victim's body has been sent to the Sungai Buloh Hospital for a post-mortem. The suspect has been remanded until July 1 to assist in the investigation. A knife believed to have been used in the killing was found at the house. The case is being investigated for murder. Hafiz urged the public to forward any relevant information to the investigating officer, Nurnazihah Norzilan, at 011-1149 9008.

The civil case had been listed for trial in February 2027 but a judge at London's High Court said she was 'very keen to get on' with the case and fixed the trial start date for June 22, 2026. 'We just need to make this happen, really,' High Court judge Christina Lambert said. 'It is not in anyone's interests that this case goes into the long grass of 2027,' she added. Tate, 38, a former kickboxer and reality TV show contestant, moved to Romania years ago after first starting a webcam business in Britain. He became famous in 2016 when he appeared on the 'Big Brother' UK reality television show, but was removed after a controversial video emerged. He then turned to social media platforms to promote his often misogynistic and divisive views on how to be successful. In court documents, one woman claimed Tate 'would strangle her or grab her by her throat if she spoke back to him or said anything that he did not like'. The documents also alleged that Tate 'had weapons, including firearms, which were often pointed at her' and that he had 'indicated to her that he would like to kill someone if he could'. A lawyer for Tate previously told the court there was a 'total denial of wrongdoing' by his client. After the hearing, the four claimants welcomed the judge's decision. 'We've already spent years waiting for justice, and so it's of some comfort to hear that Andrew Tate will face these allegations in a court earlier than the original plan of 2027,' they said in a statement. A spokesman for Tate previously said: 'He denies ever threatening anyone with a firearm, engaging in non-consensual acts or subjecting any individual to physical or psychological harm.'

Ipoh man died from gunshot to chest, say police after son arrested in murder probe
IPOH, June 26 — There was a gunshot wound on the left side of the chest of a 57-year-old man found dead in the kitchen of a house in Taman Tasek Damai here two days ago. Ipoh police chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said this was contained in the report of the post-mortem examination carried out at the Forensic Department of Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (HRPB). 'In addition to stab wounds, the post-mortem report also revealed a gunshot injury on the left side of the chest and the cause of death was determined to be due to a gunshot wound on the chest,' he said in a statement today. As such, he urged those with information on the incident to contact Investigating Officer ASP Mohd Rezan Yussop @ Ariffin at 016-9648706 or the nearest police station. Yesterday, Abang Zainal Abidin said that the victim was found lying on his back in a pool of blood in the kitchen with stab wounds in the abdomen and slash injuries to the right side of the chest in the 8.26 pm incident on Tuesday (June 24). Following that, police arrested a 31-year-old man, who is also the victim's son, at midnight to assist in the investigation.
