Springfield Art Museum seeks artists for Route 66 sculpture project
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Springfield Art Museum has announced a new Route 66 sculpture series to place citywide sculptures around Springfield and across the Ozarks in 2026.
According to a Springfield Art Museum social media post, the museum has announced the Springfield 66 Centennial Sculpture Series, which will feature designed Route 66 shield sculptures being displayed starting in spring 2026.
The museum is seeking artists who are interested in showcasing a story of community, heritage and imagination for the project, the post says.
New pavilion at Springfield city park is cooperative effort of MDC and other partners
Artists will receive a blank Route 66 emblem sculpture canvas to bring their creative skills to life for the Springfield 66 marketing campaign.
The museum says that artists must present a submission between June 1 to July 27, 2025, for the project. Artists will be notified for approval by Monday, September 1.

Meet the Rockford artist beautifying neighborhoods with murals
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Jesse Leach is a Rockford artist looking to beautify neighborhoods with new murals. You can find him at the corner of Charles Street and Center Terrace in Rockford, working on a mural he calls 'Food For Thought.' It was commissioned by the owners of Da Catch, which is a restaurant on that same corner. Leach used his phone as a guide as he painted faces on the wall. He says he wasn't initially drawn to painting when he began his journey as an artist. He used a colored pencil. It took a suggestion from another area artist to get him into the other art form. 'Roni Golan, he told me, after he saw all my art, color pencil, he was just like, 'why don't you just paint it all?' So, that's what started my journey six years ago, painting,' Leach said. He's been able to work quickly on the mural. 'I did that side over there within a week,' he said while working around the corner. He explained his process. 'From start to finish, we primed the wall, we scraped everything down. I do the sketch out. After sketching it out, it's going back over the lines, just kind of bringing the picture together more and more,' Leach explained while painting. 'After this, it's the color fill. That's when I just start throwing colors all over the place just to fill in the gaps to minimize all the white, or minimize the background so I know where I'm going and I can use everything once it's all put together.' 'And then going back over three or four times,' he said. 'Like I did over on that wall over there, I went back and forth up and down the wall probably like three-four times before I was satisfied by how everything looked, and I still feel like I can go back over the lines even more.' 'Then it's the shading and the highlights,' he said. 'That's just going back and getting the picture to have some depth, so it's now starting to pop out at you a little bit, so it gives you that 3D effect almost.' He says the most important part of the entire process is trying to inspire others through his art. 'I hope I inspire people to wake up and want to do any form of creativity that they know, even if it's singing, dancing, anything,' he said. 'Just wake up one morning, go downtown or something, or be out and just have a ball… express yourself that way.' 'It's therapeutic,' he said. 'While you focus on the painting, you don't have time to worry about other things. You're too busy tapped out of the world and tapped into this, into the art. For the soul, it's freedom.' Village of Los Ranchos shares potential list of projects for the next five years
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – In Albuquerque's North Valley, the Village of Los Ranchos is trying to figure out how it should prioritize millions of dollars of work over the next few years. The list includes 17 projects, including a lot of road work along Fourth Street and Rio Grande Blvd near Paseo del Norte, but before any decisions they want to hear what neighbors think. Ideas include new sound barriers and better pedestrian crossings near Paseo del Norte, creating new balloon landing zones, and upgrading several basic rough trails. Politicians sink $13M in closed New Mexico tourist attraction 'They're not even, they're not flat, not developed. They're basically informal. Some of those will stay that way, but then there are others where we know we have to have better access for young people who might be wanting to access the schools,' said Village of Los Ranchos Mayor Lawrence Rael. Meanwhile, in some of the public feedback, some say Los Ranchos needs better traffic and noise management. Douglas Cutler agrees, saying he wants to see upgrades on Fourth Street. 'I would like to see focus on Fourth and Osuna in that area. It seems like with all of the new construction there and the new residents in that apartment complex, the streets are not adequate to handle the traffic,' said Douglas Cutler, a Village of Los Ranchos resident. Mayor Lawrence Rael said the Village priorities also include upgrades to Rio Grande Boulevard, where a $15 million project could make a roundabout just south of Paseo. 'There will be some repaving of the whole corridor, I'd like to look at the shoulders a little bit. We have a lot of folks commuting through there with bikes and a lot of folks recreating,' said Mayor Rael. Where was 'No Country for Old Men' filmed in New Mexico? The mayor said their priorities aren't final yet and could change with public feedback. 'It would be really great to have those projects in place and that the Village is thriving and moving forward,' said Mayor Rael.
