The Musharraf Letter
Blocked from Attending His Mother's Funeral
A New Beginning in India
Legacy and Personal Losses
Singer-composer Adnan Sami , who gave up his Pakistani citizenship and officially became an Indian citizen in 2016, has once again opened up about the many personal and professional reasons behind his decision. In a recent interview, Sami reflected on the challenges he faced in Pakistan—both in his career and personal life—and reiterated that financial gain had nothing to do with his move to India.Born in London to a Pakistani father who was a pilot and diplomat, Sami spent a large part of his early life between Pakistan and Canada before eventually settling in India. Despite hailing from a well-established background, he revealed that choosing to live and work in India came at a significant cost. 'I gave up properties worth crores in Pakistan,' he said, noting that material wealth was never his priority. 'Money wasn't my driving force.'During the interview, Sami also addressed the letter his father received in 2005 from the then-President of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf . The letter criticized Adnan for allegedly abandoning Pakistan. Sami was still a Pakistani citizen at the time and said the accusation made no sense. He pointed out that the misinformation seemed to have come from multiple levels of government before reaching the top. 'There was no truth to that letter,' Sami said, expressing disappointment over the reaction from the authorities and the public. He also shared that during that period, he had reached out to Musharraf for assistance as he was facing difficulties as a public figure with a Pakistani passport. However, instead of support, he felt disowned by the establishment.Sami also revealed the pain of being denied the chance to attend his mother's funeral in 2024. After her sudden death, he quickly sought permission from Indian authorities to travel to Pakistan, which was granted without hesitation. But when he applied for a visa from Pakistan, his request was rejected—even after explaining the reason for his travel. Unable to visit in time, he had to witness her final rites over a WhatsApp video call.Adnan Sami credited legendary singer Asha Bhosle for helping him find his footing in India when he first arrived. At a time when the Pakistani music industry sidelined him, Bhosle encouraged him to move to Mumbai, saying that it was the true hub of Hindi music. Following her advice, Sami moved to India and stayed at the late R.D. Burman's house, which Bhosle had opened up for him. 'I was very lucky because it was like a music temple,' he recalled.Once in India, songs that didn't receive attention in Pakistan—such as Kabhi To Nazar Milao, Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein, and Lift Karadey—were promoted with full force and became major hits. Sami said the Indian audience gave him the love and respect he never expected, which was crucial for an artist's growth.Reflecting on the plight of legendary Pakistani artists like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mehdi Hassan, and Reshma, Sami expressed sadness over how many of them ended their lives in poverty and neglect despite their global fame. He suggested that the authorities failed to support these icons, a fate he believes he might have shared had he stayed.Though Sami has faced heavy criticism from Pakistan since taking Indian citizenship , he remains resolute in his decision. His journey is marked by emotional sacrifice, cultural rebirth, and a determination to grow as an artist. 'An artist's nourishment is his audience,' Sami said, adding that India gave him the opportunity to start over—and thrive.

Housefull 5, starring Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh and Abhishek Bachchan, was released on June 6 amid mixed reviews. Let's find out how much it collected at the box office on the day of its release. But, before that, let's find out how much is at stake. The total budget for Housefull 5 is ₹ 240 crore, according to Pinkvilla. Out of this, ₹ 225 crore was used for production. This covers the cost of paying the actors, shooting in multiple locations, building large sets and adding special effects. Another ₹ 15 crore was set aside for promotion, including posters, trailers and media events. Even before the film hit cinemas, it earned ₹ 135 crore through non-theatrical deals, the publication added. The digital streaming rights were sold for ₹ 75 crore, TV satellite rights brought in ₹ 40 crore, and the music rights fetched ₹ 20 crore. However, to break even, the film still needs to earn ₹ 105 crore through theatre collections. For this, it must collect around ₹ 250 crore from cinemas worldwide. Just breaking even is not enough to call a film a hit. For Housefull 5 to be considered a success at the box office, it needs to gross at least ₹ 325 crore worldwide, Pinkvilla added. The comedy movie will compete with the previous installment, Housefull 4, the biggest commercial success in Akshay Kumar's Hindi film career with a collection of ₹ ₹ 210.3 crore. It was also the biggest film in Riteish Deshmukh's career. The next two films are Good Newwz ( ₹ 205.09 crore) and Mission Mangal ( ₹ 203.08 crore). For Akshay Kumar, these are the only three Hindi films that collected above ₹ 200 crore. The biggest movie is his career, however, is 2.0. The Tamil movie collected ₹ 744.78 crore worldwide. Housefull 5 has made a strong start at the box office, earning ₹ 23 crore on its opening day. This impressive figure places it as the fourth-highest first-day grosser in Akshay Kumar's Bollywood career. It trails behind Mission Mangal ( ₹ 29.16 crore), Sooryavanshi ( ₹ 26.29 crore) and Gold ( ₹ 25.25 crore). With this performance, Housefull 5 has overtaken the opening figures of other notable Akshay Kumar films like Kesari ( ₹ 21.06 crore), Singh Is Bliing ( ₹ 20.67 crore) and 2.0 (Hindi version, ₹ 20.25 crore).

Did you know that Raj Kapoor had predicted that Dilip Kumar will be an actor, the duo played soccer together

The enduring bond between cinematic legends Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor began long before the silver screen made them household names. Their friendship was rooted in a shared upbringing in Peshawar and a mutual respect that spanned decades. In a candid conversation with Lehren Retro , Dilip Kumar fondly recounted their early days, highlighting how Raj Kapoor had a significant influence on his journey into films. 'We come from the same town. I was born in Peshawar, he was born in Peshawar. Our families knew each other,' Dilip shared. He reminisced about their childhood games, particularly soccer matches, where Raj Kapoor's leadership shone through. 'He was the one who always used to say, when we used to play the game of soccer, he was good goalkeeper and a very good referee, particularly when we used to play against British army teams he used to assert himself… all as a little boy,' he recalled with a smile. Raj, even in those early days, envisioned a future in cinema for them both. 'So he used to tell me you go into films, we both will go into films,' Dilip said. However, acting wasn't initially on his radar. 'But I said no, because that was not the thing in those times you would aspire to do. So I used to tell him that you go, your father also does the same, so you should follow his footsteps.' Years later, fate brought them together again on a film set. Raj recognised Dilip instantly and reminded him of his childhood prediction. 'He said I told you you will be here,' Dilip recalled warmly. 'We had a lovely relationship,' he added, reflecting on the depth of their camaraderie. Interestingly, despite their close friendship and towering presence in Hindi cinema, they shared the screen just once — in Andaz (1949), a film that became both a critical and commercial landmark.
