Former Sri Lanka ministers jailed up to 25 years for corruption

COLOMBO: A Sri Lankan court sentenced on Thursday (May 29) two former ministers from the government of deposed president Gotabaya Rajapaksa to decades in prison in a landmark corruption case.
Former sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage and former trade minister Anil Fernando were found guilty by the Colombo High Court of misappropriating 53 million rupees (S$228,000) of state funds.
The pair were also fined US$2,000 (S$2,580) for using government money to donate board games – including 14,000 carrom boards and 11,000 draughts sets – in an attempt to boost the failed 2015 re-election bid of Gotabaya's elder brother, Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Aluthgamage was sentenced to 20 years in jail. Fernando was sentenced to 25 years.
Aluthgamage is now the most senior member of a Rajapaksa-led Cabinet to be successfully prosecuted for corruption.
The cases against both men were initiated six years ago, when the Rajapaksa brothers were out of power, but the case had been making slow headway until a new government took office last year.
Aluthgamage also faces a separate investigation into allegations that he authorised in 2022 a payment of US$6.09 million to a Chinese supplier for a fertiliser shipment that was never delivered.
He caused a stir in 2020 when he accused Sri Lanka's national cricket team of rigging the 2011 World Cup final in favour of India, triggering an investigation that ultimately failed to substantiate his claims.
Aluthgamage, who served as sports minister from 2010 to 2015, said in June 2020 that he had 'not wanted to disclose' the alleged match-fixing plot at the time.
'In 2011, we were supposed to win, but we sold the match. I feel I can talk about it now. I am not implicating players, but certain sections were involved,' he said.
Sri Lanka lost the final at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium by six wickets. Both Indian and Sri Lankan players have strongly denied any wrongdoing. - AFP

WASHINGTON: Tensions between Elon Musk and Donald Trump erupted Tuesday as the world's richest man derided the president's key piece of economic legislation in a startling rupture just days after exiting a controversial job in the White House. Musk was lauded by the Republican leader as he left his advisory role atop Trump's "Department of Government Efficiency" last week, despite criticism over his failure to deliver on promises of radical spending cuts. "This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination," Musk posted on X as he followed its progress from the sidelines, in by far his most caustic remarks on Trump's agenda. "Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong." It was not Musk's first comments on Trump's so-called "big, beautiful bill", which is set to add US$3 trillion to US deficits over a 10-year horizon, despite deep cuts to health and food aid programmes. But Musk's previous criticism was more restrained, with the Tesla and SpaceX magnate offering only that it undermined his cost-cutting efforts. On Tuesday he said the bill – being considered by Congress – would burden "citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt." His post laid bare an increasingly tense relationship between the White House and Musk, who donated almost US$300 million to Trump's 2024 election campaign. Musk has become disillusioned, US media reported, as his goals for White House action that would benefit him personally have gone unrealised. The bill he was criticising cuts the electric vehicle tax credit – bad news for Tesla – while Axios reported that Musk was rebuffed in his efforts to extend his role beyond the statutory 130-day limit. He also failed to have his Starlink satellite system used for air traffic control, according to Axios, and was angered by Trump withdrawing the nomination of Musk ally Jared Isaacman to be Nasa chief. The normally pugilistic Trump has pulled his punches, aware of his biggest backer's enormous influence over young, tech-savvy and historically apathetic voters – a key Trump constituency in 2024. "The president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill, it doesn't change his opinion," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters in a rapid response to Musk's tweet. The spat came with House Republicans set to pass legislation sent from the White House to enshrine into law US$9.4 billion of DOGE's cuts, mostly money destined for public broadcasting and foreign aid. House Speaker Mike Johnson called Musk's comments "disappointing", adding that he had walked the entrepreneur through the bill on Monday, and that he "seemed to understand". As the world's richest person bowed out of his role as Trump's cost-cutter-in-chief, their relationship appeared on an even keel as the Republican hailed his fellow billionaire's "incredible service". Trump even insisted that Musk was "really not leaving" after a turbulent four months in which the South African-born tycoon cut tens of thousands of jobs, shuttered whole agencies and slashed foreign aid. DOGE led an ideologically driven rampage through the federal government, with its young "tech bros" slashing tens of thousands of jobs. But its achievements fell far short of Musk's original boast that he could save US$2 trillion – more than the government's entire discretionary spending budget for 2024. The DOGE website claims to have saved taxpayers less than a tenth of that total – just US$180 billion – and fact checkers even see that claim as dubious, given previous inaccuracies in its accounting. Senate Democrats released a report Tuesday itemising 130 examples of "unethical or potentially corrupt" administration actions they say have helped Musk dodge regulation and add US$100 billion to his wealth. The report came as senators began what is expected to be a fraught month of negotiations on Trump's mammoth policy package, expected to add between US$2.5 trillion and US$3.1 trillion to deficits over a decade. Trump said on Monday it was "the single biggest Spending Cut in History," although he added: "The only 'cutting' we will do is for Waste, Fraud, and Abuse."

Norwegian official hails Chinese innovation, calls for deeper maritime ties
OSLO, June 3 (Xinhua) -- A Norwegian official has praised the green technologies and innovative solutions showcased by Chinese companies at Nor-Shipping 2025, expressing hope for enhanced maritime cooperation between Norway and China. Speaking to Xinhua after visiting the China Pavilion, Even Tronstad Sagebakken, state secretary at Norway's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries, said he was impressed by the technological progress demonstrated by Chinese shipbuilders. It is impressive to see not only the innovation but also the practical implementation of green solutions by Chinese shipbuilders, Sagebakken said. "They are at the forefront of technology development... the advancements we need to drive the green transition in the maritime sector." Sagebakken highlighted the long-standing collaboration between Norwegian and Chinese maritime firms, noting that many Norwegian suppliers are already involved in China's shipbuilding industry. "It's a partnership that goes way back, has developed over time, and is very much appreciated by the Norwegian side." He expressed optimism that this cooperation will grow even stronger in the future, delivering further progress for both countries. Held in Lillestrom, about 20 km east of Oslo, Nor-Shipping is one of the world's premier maritime trade fairs. Established in 1965 and held biennially, the four-day event runs through June 6, drawing nearly 1,000 companies and organizations from over 50 countries and regions. "India's response to the attack was appreciated": Sanjay Kumar Jha-led delegation concludes visit; departs for India
Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia], June 3 (ANI): The all-party delegation led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha concluded its 13-day diplomatic mission across five nations--Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, and Singapore--departing Kuala Lumpur for India on Tuesday. During the visit, the delegation effectively communicated India's unified stance against cross-border terrorism, secured strong international condemnation of the April 22 Pahalgam attack, and called for global action to pressure Pakistan to end its support for terrorism. The delegation highlighted India's responsible response to the attack and the international consensus on zero tolerance for terrorism as part of the diplomatic outreach programme following Operation Sindoor. Prior to their departure, delegation leader Sanjay Kumar Jha emphasised the delegation's unity, underscoring its unified voice and India's responsible approach to the ceasefire. 'One big thing is that the all-party delegation and the message we are sharing were in one voice and that India is united... All of us spoke in the same voice with the same feeling, and it was felt that we were representing the entire country... We wanted to convey to these countries India's stand on cross-border terrorism... We requested to put in a word to Pakistan and tell them that this has to stop,' Sarangi said. Congress leader Salman Khurshid noted the success of their outreach, emphasising the global consensus on terrorism and the need for Pakistan's response to determine future steps. 'We have had a high level of success. Most certainly, our point of view was conveyed and heard very seriously... there is widespread consensus on the issue of terrorism... the problems for everyone are that when they have to talk about the next steps that have to be taken... it depends a lot on what responses we get from Pakistan,' the Congress leader stated. Former Indian Ambassador to France Mohan Kumar also affirmed the delegation's impact, noting the universal condemnation of terrorism and support for India's defensive actions. 'I can confidently say... an all-party delegation was appreciated by all our interlocutors. It was accepted that India spoke in one voice... There was unanimous and universal condemnation of terrorism. There was support for India's action and condolences for victims (of Pahalgam attack)... We have conveyed clearly to them that it was not our choice to have a war and that we were merely responding to the horrific terrorist attacks,' Kumar stated. CPI-M MP John Brittas summarised the trip's success, stating that India's peace-oriented stance despite terrorism challenges was successfully communicated. 'It has been a successful trip to the five nations. We met many sections of society. We could convey the message of India about what actually happened and how cross-border terrorism affects us. We understand that they appreciate that India wants to be on the path of peace and progress,' the CPI-M MP stated. The delegation also included BJP MPs Brij Lal, Pradan Baruah, and Hemang Joshi; TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee.
