Bangladesh HC grants bail to Hindu monk; government seeks stay
DHAKA: Hours after a bench of the
Bangladesh high court
ordered the release of
Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das
on bail on Wednesday - five months after his arrest on charges of defaming the country's national flag - the interim govt filed a petition seeking a stay on the reprieve granted to the monk. The plea is scheduled to be heard on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, the HC had issued its verdict following the final hearing on Chinmoy's bail application in a
sedition case
filed on Oct 31, 2024. The two-judge bench, comprising justice Md Atowar Rahman and justice Md Ali Reza, upheld its earlier ruling and asked the authorities why Chinmoy should not be granted bail, according to a court official. On Oct 31, a case was filed at the Kotwali police station in Chittagong, accusing Chinmoy and 18 others of disrespecting the Bangladesh national flag. The sedition case was lodged by Firoz Khan, former BNP general secretary of Chittagong's Mohora ward.
Chinmoy was arrested at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Nov 25. The following day, the local court in Chittagong sent him to jail after rejecting his bail plea. His subsequent
bail petition
was denied by the same court on Dec 11.

Deep-rooted conspiracy in Nagaram land transactions: ED to HC
The ongoing investigation into the alleged fraudulent sale of Bhoodan lands as private lands in Nagaram village of Maheshwaram mandal in Ranga Reddy district suggested that there was a 'deep-rooted conspiracy' and 'use of forged documents', the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said. In a counter affidavit filed before the Bench of Justice C.V. Bhaskar Reddy of the Telangana High Court in a writ petition seeking probe into 'Bhoodan land fraud', the ED officials said that manipulation of records maintained by officials at Tahsil, Mandal, District and Chief Commissioner of Land Administration offices resulted in alienation of government land. 'The investigation is on and there is a possibility that some more facts may emerge regarding the role of the said persons and also Government officials,' the counter affidavit by ED Hyderabad Assistant Director Gajaraj Singh Thakur stated. The ED informed the HC that they had recorded the statement of writ petitioner Birla Mallesh under Section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, and stating that the petitioner revealed certain facts related to lands under survey no. 194 of Nagaram village. The ED officer informed the HC that the complaint of Mr. Mallesh was forwarded to the Telangana DGP under Section 66 of the PMLA on November 8, 2024. However, there was no response from the DGP office till date in the matter, the affidavit stated. No action under PMLA was initiated by the ED relating to lands under survey nos. 194 and 195 of Nagaram village, as no case was registered by any police station. Following a private complaint lodged by one Dastagir Shareef, a court referred case was registered against Khaderunnisa and others by the Maheshwaram police of the Rachakonda Commissionerate. Based on this, the ED issued an Enforcement Case Information Report pertaining to fraudulent transactions over lands in survey no. 181 and 182, the affidavit said. No ECIR was issued relating to lands under survey nos. 194 and 195. The writ petitioner Mallesh alleged that some senior IAS and IPS officers purchased lands in Nagaram villages under these survey numbers. Justice C.V. Bhaskar Reddy issued notices to the senior bureaucrats directing them to file their respective counter affidavits. The officers moved the division bench seeking a direction to stay the single judge's order. The division bench, however, instructed them to file their objections and responses before the single judge.

HC urges vigil against exploitation of devotees through fake websites, social media accounts
Kochi: HC has directed the chief vigilance officer of the Cochin Devaswom Board (CDB) to maintain constant vigil against the exploitation of devotees through fake websites, Instagram accounts and similar platforms that misuse the names of temples for online pooja bookings, donations and related services. The court observed that the perpetrators behind such fraudulent platforms must be proceeded against in accordance with law by lodging appropriate complaints before the station house officer of the concerned police station. The court was considering a petition by C Devidas and three other devotees of the Tripunithura Poornathrayeesa Temple seeking immediate action to remove various fake 'official' Instagram and other social media accounts operating in the name of Poornathrayeesa Temple and other temples under CDB. The court further directed the CDB to take necessary steps to provide facilities for online pooja bookings, donations and similar services in respect of all major temples under its management, if such provisions are not already in place, for the convenience of devotees. BNP is the arch rival of the deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina 's Awami League. In a statement on Saturday, Jamaat termed the joint press briefing by representatives of both Yunus and Rahman as a "breach of political norms" since the interim government chief particularly advanced the election time deviating from the deadline he announced last week in Dhaka. Live Events "Through this, he (Yunus) has expressed special affection for a party (BNP), which has undermined his impartiality," the statement said, adding that instead of announcing the new deadline on the foreign soil, he should have done it after consulting other parties on his return home. The NCP, which was launched in February, on Friday night said people would not accept any election date before the implementation of the proposed July Charter, referring to last year's violent student-led agitation that toppled Hasina's regime. Hasina fled to India on August 5 and three days later, Yunus assumed charge as the chief of the interim government. The NCP emerged as a political offshoot of Students Against Discrimination (SAD). The NCP said the Yunus-Rahman meeting laid more importance on the election deadline but the "people's main demand" in the post-Hasina regime "namely justice and reform, did not receive the same importance", adding "the NCP finds this very disappointing." The BNP, several other parties and the military had been mounting pressure on Yunus to conduct general elections by December. He, however, in a nationwide address last week, said the polls would be held in April next year. Yunus previously said the polls would be held in between December 2024 or June 2025 following the reforms and justice or the trial of the deposed regime leaders were completed. The Jamaat statement said it was "morally inappropriate" for Yunus as the head of the interim government to hold a joint press briefing with a single party and added that such actions raised doubts among people about fairness and neutrality of the upcoming election process. The statement came after a meeting of the party's Central Executive Council was held on Saturday morning. The NCP, on the other hand, said it repeatedly observed that the government is giving priority to the position and demands of "only one political party" on the election issue. "We believe that holding the National Assembly elections without a clear roadmap for the formulation of the 'July Proclamation', the implementation of the 'July Charter' and the implementation of the trial will turn the popular uprising into a mere transfer of power and will suppress the people's desire for state building," the NCP statement read. Yunus' interim government had disbanded Awami League until its leaders were exposed to punitive actions for what it claimed were their brutal actions to tame the uprising. Most Awami leaders were arrested, some went underground or fled abroad as the interim government initiated a process to try them, including Hasina, in Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal on charges like crimes against humanity.
