East Kilbride v Dunfermline: Mick Kennedy says top opposition friendlies will serve side well for League Cup
The League Two side will face the Pars on Saturday before facing Hearts behind closed doors East Kilbride players started their pre-season training this past week and Mick Kennedy's men will be thrown straight into a tough test this weekend. The Lowland League champions and newly-promoted League Two side welcome Neil Lennon's Dunfermline Athletic to K-Park for their first pre-season friendly on Saturday afternoon, ahead of a clash behind closed doors against Premiership side Hearts. Kilby are being thrown in at the deep end, but Kennedy insists it is required ahead opening competitive action at home to championship side St Johnstone on July 12 in the Premier Sports League Cup. On Saturday's test, which is a 3pm kick-off, the Kilby gaffer said: 'It will be the first pre-season friendly for both of us so it will be interesting. I believe Dunfermline have been away for a warm weather training camp so I am sure they will be well-prepared. 'To be fair to our boys, they've come back in great shape so it will be a good test. It is about trying to bed the new boys in, in terms of our philosophy because it will be different to what they are used to. 'Dunfermline and Hearts are difficult games to bed them in, to be honest, but it is a good environment for them to test themselves. 'Neil is trying to build a new team and at the early stages of rebuilding so we'll be interested to see what kind of team he plays. I imagine what team he plays on Saturday and what team starts the season for them will be very different. 'A full-time and Championship club coming here is a great test. We wanted to play against top opposition to prepare us for the League Cup. 'The Hearts game has been sorted, but it is behind closed doors so there will be no fans. That game will be a tough one for the boys.'

Wrexham AFC defender Will Boyle leaves for Shrewsbury Town
Although he had 12 months remaining on his contract at Wrexham, the 29-year-old has joined League Two cross-border rivals Shrewsbury Town on a two-year deal. Boyle only made four appearances last season with none coming in League One, as the defender started three EFL Trophy group stage games as well as the League Cup first round defeat to Sheffield United. Injuries hampered Boyle's progress and he also found Tom O'Connor and Lewis Brunt ahead of him in the pecking order. With Parkinson planning for life in the Championship after Wrexham secured an historic third successive promotion, he admits it was better for Boyle, who made 28 appearances in his first season with the Reds after joining from Huddersfield Town in the summer 2023, to seek an opportunity elsewhere so he doesn't risk becoming a forgotten man. "Boyley is another player who had a disrupted season through injury," said Parkinson. "Obviously Tom O'Connor started the season on the left of the back three and then Lewis Brunt came in, and Boyley was struggling to get fit anyway. "He didn't contribute as much as he would have liked but he has been a great lad to have around and we wish him all the best at his new club. "We have had circumstances like this before. "Obviously Paul Mullin is a higher profile one with what he has done for the club and his goals, but with players like Jordan Davies the year before, unless I could guarantee he was going to play he needed to go on loan and Boyley is the same. "Even though he has got a year left on his contract, he couldn't have another year where he wasn't going to play because then you can become a forgotten man in football, and that's important. "We have sensible conversations with these players and it was inevitable that players were going to move on this summer." Parkinson is looking to free up space in his squad for new signings, with prolific striker Mullin joining Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan. "We have got to make the numbers add up," he added. "If we are going to bring players in, we have got to make room with players going out." Boyle made a total of 32 appearances in all competitions for the Reds and he scored six goals. Away from the pitch, Boyle is on the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA)'s Players' Board, having been elected last season.
