Meet Aarit Kapil, The 9-Year-Old Chess Prodigy Who Nearly Defeated Magnus Carlsen
Last Updated:
Aarit Kapil on Tuesday came close to beating Magnus Carlsen in an online blitz game.
A nine-year-old Delhi boy has become the latest Indian chess sensation after pushing five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen to the brink during the Early Titled Tuesday competition. Aarit Kapil faced the world no. 1 Norwegian in an online blitz game and drew the game after 49 moves.
The Early Titled Tuesday competition is open to players with FIDE titles and featured the likes of Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana and Vladimir Kramnik.
Aarit, who lives in Mayur Vihar and studies in Vth standard, played the game from his hotel room in Georgia where he's currently taking part in FIDE World Cadets Cup (under-10 category).
The game format at Titled Tuesday allows each player three minutes at the start and an increment of a second per move. Aarit held an advantageous position till the 46th move but was running out of time with just seven seconds on the clock.
Carlsen had 20 seconds left himself and eventually the two agreed for a draw.
Aarit's Initiation Into Chess
Aarit was just five when his elder sister introduced him to chess. And he took to chess like a fish to water. 'He was five years old when his elder sister Aarna taught him chess. In one week, he was beating us," Aarit's father Vijay told The Indian Express. 'Not like I am a serious player – I am the equivalent of a bathroom singer in the sport: a casual player. But we saw his potential, so we got him working with a coach. And in a few days, he won an international online tournament."
Giving Carlsen a tough fight isn't the first notable feat of Aarit's career. In 2024, he defeated USA's Raset Ziatdinov to become the third youngest player in the world to beat a grandmaster.
'Sometimes when he has a bad tournament, we jokingly tell him ' tera chess rukwadenge (We'll stop your chess). He says, ' jo marzi karlo, chess nahi chhodunga ' (Do whatever you can, I won't stop playing chess)," Vijay said.

IND vs ENG Tests: 'Why was it not kept a secret?', Aakash Chopra questions decision to reveal Jasprit Bumrah's involvement in England series
Former India cricketer has raised questions about India's decision to publicly announce 's limited participation in the ongoing England Test series, where the pace spearhead is set to play only three matches as part of workload management. This was confirmed by India coach before the series and reiterated after the Headingley loss. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra questioned the strategy of making this information public, suggesting that keeping it confidential could have given India a tactical advantage. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. " said he will play three matches only, and I am thinking whether it was required to publicise it. Why was it not kept a secret? We don't announce our team as well. So why was it necessary to reiterate it repeatedly before the start of the tour that he would play three matches only? Let them guess. You play whichever Tests you wish," said Chopra. Jasprit Bumrah press conference: Lashes out at critics, dropped catches and no balls Chopra highlighted the potential disadvantages of this public announcement, particularly regarding England's preparation and pitch strategies for the remaining matches. "You have played one, and you know you can play only two of the remaining four matches, which is not a good thing. If you play the second as well, you will play one of three. So, suddenly, the opposition gets into a great frame of mind that Bumrah, your biggest strength, is also not there. You can prepare pitches accordingly," said Chopra. The former opener also expressed concerns about India's fast bowling future, emphasising the need to prepare the next generation of pace bowlers. "The next generation of Indian fast bowlers will have to be prepared. It's a serious issue. There were two important pillars of India's good performances away from home. One was batters starting to score runs, but it doesn't work out with that as you need to pick up 20 wickets. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now So Mohammad Shami and Mohammed Siraj were outstanding with Jasprit Bumrah," said Chopra. Chopra reflected on India's past pace bowling successes while discussing the current challenges facing the team's fast bowling department. "I also remember Ishant Sharma, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Lord's Test. When there are doubts about Bumrah's availability, who will take the responsibility going forward, because Mohammad Shami, I think that story is not over, but it is close to an ending. Mohammed Siraj is good, but he hasn't reached the rank of Bumrah or Shami," Chopra added.

Neeraj Chopra, Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem may finally face off in THIS event after Paris Olympics 2024
Neeraj Chopra (left) and Arshad Nadeem. (Photo: IANS) The world has been awaiting the much-vaunted face off between India's double Olympics medallist Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan's Paris Olympics 2024 gold medallist Arshad Nadeem. The two javelin stars from Asia have not faced each other in any event since the Paris Olympics. While Neeraj has been a regular in Diamond League events this season, Arshad Nadeem's only major appearance was in the Asian Athletics Championships 2025 last month which the Indian star had skipped. It is not expected that the two Asian giants will collide in the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo, which is scheduled to take place from September 13 to 21 this year. Both Neeraj Chopra and reigning Olympics champion Arshad Nadeem are building up to this event. 'My focus is on the World Athletics Championships and I am working hard for that. It is very hot in Lahore. I am going to England soon and will be training there for a month,' Arshad Nadeem told reporters in Pakistan last week. Tight at the top! After 2 of 4 qualification meetings for the men's javelin throw it's India's king 👑 Neeraj Chopra & German powerhouse 💥 Julian Weber who are in control. Two more important opportunities for everyone in the standings to make it to the final in Zurich🇨🇭… — Wanda Diamond League (@Diamond_League) June 26, 2025 Neeraj Chopra won Ostrava Golden Spike event Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra won the prestigious Ostrava Golden Spike 2025 event earlier this week with a throw of 85.29m. It was Neeraj's second victory on the trot after winning the Paris Diamond League 2025 title last week. Neeraj defeated Germany's Julian Weber, who had beaten the Indian in the Doha Diamond League 2025 and Janusz Kusocinski Memorial event earlier this year. Even Neeraj had admitted before the Ostrava event that his goal was to win in World Championships. 'I am really happy to work with such a great athlete and coach. I've already thrown 90m this year after little bit more improvement in technique. So let's see when it comes next time but I am ready. Recently we've done a good training in Nymburk (Czech Republic) so I'll do my best here in Ostrava. Main goal for the season is obviously World Championships in Tokyo,' Neeraj said. If both athletes remain fit then fans will finally be able to witness Neeraj Chopra vs Arshad Nadeem clash for the first time in more than a year. Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 to take place in Bengaluru next month The Indian is also excited about hosting the first-ever 'Neeraj Chopra Classic' event in Bengaluru on July 5. The event had to be postponed due to India-Pakistan border tensions after India's Operation Sindoor. 'This will be my first really serious competition in India with international athletes, on July 5. I still have to manage a lot of things before competition but it will be a good experience,' he said earlier this week. 'So now it would not be good if I would say no to people. And I'm happy that now in India people recognise other sports than cricket,' he added. Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem had set a new Olympics javelin record with a throw of 92.97m in Paris to leave Neeraj Chopra in second place. Neeraj has finally shattered the 90m barrier earlier this year.
