Ombudsman orders food price inspections
Responding to public complaints regarding profiteering, violation of official price lists and sale of substandard food items, the Punjab Ombudsman has ordered inspections and immediate action in various districts to safeguard consumer rights and ensure fair market practices.
On the ombudsman's directives, price control magistrates and Punjab Food Authority officials carried out joint inspections in markets and food outlets, reviewing the quality and pricing of essential items, including chicken, fish, meat, milk, eggs, cooking oil, beverages and fried foods. Several instances of overpricing and the sale of unhygienic and unsafe items were uncovered during the inspections.
As a result, fines exceeding Rs600,000 have been imposed on violators. In addition, numerous hotels and restaurants were penalised for poor hygiene, unsafe food handling and unacceptable environmental conditions.
The authorities took strict action against all outlets found breaching health and safety standards.
A spokesperson for the Punjab Ombudsman's Office said the actions were part of an initiative to ensure the availability of safe, hygienic and fairly priced food.
The ombudsman reiterated a zero-tolerance policy against overpricing, adulteration and negligence, directing the officials concerned that the inspections and enforcement drives continue without interruption.

Lecturer arrested over alleged harassment
A visiting lecturer at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB) has been arrested on charges of attempted sexual harassment and bribery, following a complaint lodged by a female student of the IT department. According to the FIR registered at Baghdadul Jadeed Police Station, the accused, Ahmed Mahmood, allegedly lured the student to his home under the pretense of helping improve her English paper marks — from 40 to 85. Once there, he allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs50,000 and attempted to sexually harass her. The student raised an alarm, prompting the lecturer to flee through the back door of his residence. The complaint was first reported to the Chairperson of IUB's anti-harassment committee, who immediately referred the matter to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kamran. In response, the vice chancellor terminated the lecturer's services and imposed a ban on his entry into the university campus. "The university will extend full cooperation to the police in their investigation," he said. The police have taken the accused into custody and initiated a formal investigation after registering the case.

Gambling suspects netted
Haripur police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested 13 suspects allegedly involved in illegal gambling through cockfighting. The police recovered Rs25,000 in stake money along with six roosters from their possession.
