Asean ministers laud Malaysia's proactive role in addressing Myanmar crisis

KUALA LUMPUR: Asean Foreign Ministers have commended Malaysia's proactive leadership in reviving efforts to implement the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) and facilitating constructive dialogue to address the ongoing crisis in Myanmar.
Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Enrique A. Manalo said both the informal and extended informal consultations on the implementation of the 5PC, held today ahead of the 46th Asean Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), proceeded smoothly.
"Yes, the consultations went very well. We reaffirmed our commitment to the 5PC and agreed that Asean will continue working hard.
"We congratulated Malaysia on its efforts so far to bring some kind of process forward so that perhaps there could be real dialogue between the opposing factions," he told Bernama and TV3 after attending the consultations.
Lao Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane also expressed appreciation for Malaysia's bold and proactive approach in addressing the Myanmar issue, adding that Asean remained actively engaged in efforts to pursue peace in the country.
When asked about Timor-Leste's bid to join Asean, Thongsavanh said it was not within his purview to decide, but said that "continued engagement will be key", and he believed Asean remained supportive of Timor-Leste's full membership journey.
Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa likewise praised Malaysia's leadership, saying, "I would like to give credit to the current Chair for taking proactive steps".
He said Malaysia had demonstrated responsibility in addressing the Myanmar issue and ensuring continued engagement through Asean processes.
The first informal consultation was attended by the previous, current and incoming Asean Chairs, namely Laos, Malaysia and the Philippines, while the extended informal consultation involved all Asean foreign ministers, except Myanmar.
Both sessions were chaired by Malaysia's Foreign Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim initiated separate dialogues with Myanmar's junta leader, Min Aung Hlaing, and the opposition National Unity Government (NUG), marking a significant step towards fostering direct engagement between conflicting parties.
The move has been viewed as a potential breakthrough in Asean's mediation efforts.
The 5PC was adopted by Asean in April 2021 following the military coup in Myanmar on Feb 1 that year. It calls for an immediate cessation of violence, inclusive dialogue among all parties, the appointment of a special envoy, the delivery of humanitarian assistance, and for the envoy to be granted access to all stakeholders in Myanmar.
Despite its significance, implementation of the consensus has largely stalled due to the junta's continued non-compliance, with the issue remaining a central concern in Asean's ongoing engagement with Myanmar.
The 46th Asean Summit is being held under Malaysia's 2025 Chairmanship theme, "Inclusivity and Sustainability". This year also marks Malaysia's fifth time chairing Asean, following previous terms in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) -- The sixth round of United States–Iran nuclear negotiations, scheduled for Sunday in Muscat, will no longer take place, Oman's Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi confirmed on X. The round, set to follow five previous sessions beginning in April -- with talks alternating between Muscat and Rome -- had aimed to replace the 2015 nuclear agreement (JCPOA) through indirect discussions led by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Despite the cancellation, Albusaidi added that 'diplomacy and dialogue remain the only pathway to lasting peace.'

HAWANA Special Award Recognition Of Rozaid's Legacy

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) – The HAWANA 2025 Special Award accorded to the late Rozaid Abdul Rahman is a heartfelt tribute to his service, dedication, and legacy in the field of local journalism, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister described the former Director of Media and Strategic Communications at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) as principled, responsible and a true champion of press freedom. 'The nation's journalism fraternity continues to remember the exemplary figure of the late Rozaid Abdul Rahman. 'To me, he was more than a journalist, he was a true friend, a sharp thinker and a genuine fighter for media freedom grounded in principles and accountability,' Anwar said in a Facebook post. He expressed hope that the late Rozaid's spirit and values would continue to inspire young media practitioners to uphold truth, honour ethics and strengthen democracy. At the HAWANA 2025 highlight celebration held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here today, Anwar presented the HAWANA 2025 Special Award to Rozaid's son, Roz Ariffin, witnessed by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and over 1,000 local and international media practitioners. Also present were Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, and Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also the Project Director of HAWANA 2025. Rozaid, who died on Aug 18, 2024 from a heart attack, is remembered as a highly influential figure in Malaysian journalism, with over four decades of experience in the media industry. He was appointed Director of Media and Strategic Communications at the PMO on May 23, 2023, where he played a key role in overseeing government communications and media strategies.

Extension Of SKSPS, i-Saraan Reflects Govt's Commitment To Part-time Journalists' Welfare

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) -- The extension of the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) under the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso), along with contributions to the i-Saraan scheme by the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), for part-time media practitioners reflects the government's commitment to ensuring no group is left behind in accessing social protection. Part-time Utusan Malaysia journalist Muhamad Iqbal Hamdan, who is also a committee member of the Penang Mutiara Media Club, said the initiative reflected the government's appreciation for the contributions of part-time journalists who were frequently exposed to risks while covering assignments. 'I hope these kinds of initiatives will carry on in the coming years so new part-time journalists can enjoy the same protection benefits,' he said when met by Bernama at the highlight of the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) today. Perak Media Practitioners Association (PPMP) chairman Sayed Hesham Syed Idris said the move gave part-time media practitioners the confidence and assurance to carry out their duties in the field. 'PPMP views the extension as demonstrating the government's concern in looking after the welfare of part-time journalists, given that many of them are not permanent employees and have no retirement savings. 'This initiative shows that the government is listening to the voices of the media, especially part-time journalists who do not enjoy the same benefits as permanent staff,' he said, expressing hope that an insurance scheme would also be introduced for part-time journalists. Kedah Elite Media Club (KMEK) president M. Hifzudin Ikhsan described the extension of Perkeso protection for another year as a meaningful initiative for the club's members. 'This contribution not only ensures the safety of our members who work on a part-time basis, but also upholds their right to proper protection,' he said. Echoing the same sentiment, Terengganu Media Journalists' Club (KAWAT) president Ahmad Syafri Husnaini Mohamad said the extension indirectly helped ease the burden of part-time staff who did not have a fixed income.
