National TVET Day reflects govt commitment to creating dynamic workforce, says Ahmad Zahid
KUALA LUMPUR: National TVET Day, celebrated annually on June 2, is a way for the government to position technical and vocational education and training (TVET) as a primary pathway to producing a dynamic, highly skilled, and future-ready workforce.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the celebration highlighted the progress of the country's TVET ecosystem as a key driver of human capital development, while also serving as a platform that offers educational and career opportunities in the TVET sector.
In a post on X in conjunction with the National TVET Day celebration on Monday (June 2), Ahmad Zahid, who is also the National TVET Council Committee chairman, said the efforts made were in line with the Malaysia Madani framework, which places the TVET agenda as one of the priorities.
The efforts, he said, include expanding access to TVET education to rural students, improving training facilities, and encouraging youth who want to build future careers through skills.
"In fact, with the strong support of various parties, including the government, private sector, educational institutions and the community, TVET will remain the main thrust in building a more inclusive, progressive and globally competitive Malaysia," he said.
In this regard, Ahmad Zahid invited the public to join in the celebration of National TVET Day 2025, to be held from June 11 to 13 at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Melaka. The theme of this year's TVET celebration is "TVET, the Top Career Choice". - Bernama

Ringgit strengthens against greenback as Trump administration pushes disruptive trade policies
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit continued to strengthen against the US dollar on Wednesday, as the US economy is perceived as fragile amid the Trump administration's continued push for disruptive trade policies. Meanwhile, UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd's head of investment research, Mohd Sedek Jantan, said the US dollar index (DXY) climbed to 99.2 from 98.9. "Improved US labour data is lending support to the greenback. Job openings rose to 7.4 million in April, exceeding forecasts of 7.1 million. "Wage growth is expected to continue outstripping inflation on average, which should underpin consumer spending and broader economic momentum," he said. Mohd Sedek said greater clarity on the US labour market will come with Friday's nonfarm payrolls report. At the opening, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.9456/9646 from Tuesday's close of 2.9695/9739, climbed vis-à-vis the euro to 4.8234/8541 from 4.8415/8484, and inched up against the British pound to 5.7331/7696 from 5.7337/7418 previously. Against its ASEAN peers, the ringgit rose against the Singapore dollar to 3.2868/3082 from 3.2967/3016 on Tuesday's close and improved vis-à-vis the Thai baht to 12.9786/13.0777 from 13.0334/0603 previously. It was slightly higher versus the Indonesian rupiah, at 259.7/261.5, compared to 260.1/260.6 on yesterday's close, and gained against the Philippine peso to 7.60/7.66 from 7.61/7.63 previously. - Bernama

500,000 UK tourist target for Visit Malaysia 2026, says Zahid
LONDON: Malaysia aims to attract over 500,000 tourists from the United Kingdom for Visit Malaysia 2026, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted that the UK remains one of Malaysia's strongest European markets. "In 2024 alone, 390,035 UK travellers visited Malaysia, contributing over RM2.5bil in visitor receipts. "We are truly grateful for this continued support. I am confident we will surpass 500,000 UK arrivals next year," he said during his speech launching Visit Malaysia 2026 in the UK on Tuesday (June 3). Ahmad Zahid emphasised the significance of launching the campaign in London, a hub of culture, trade, and travel. "Today, we invite the world, starting in the UK, to rediscover Malaysia in all its colour, charm, and diversity. Tourism is more than economic activity. It brings people together, creates memories, and builds understanding," he said. He noted Malaysia's tourism sector has shown extraordinary resilience and growth. "In 2024, we welcomed 38 million international visitors, a 31.1% increase from the previous year, and 8.3% higher than pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Visitor receipts reached RM106.78bil, a remarkable 43.7% growth year-on-year," he said. Between January and April, Malaysia recorded 13.4 million international arrivals, marking a 21% increase compared to the same period last year. "Recently, when I chaired the Cabinet Committee on Tourism and Culture, we approved 103 new international routes, 29 additional frequencies, and 5 charter flights. "These routes are gateways to opportunity for travellers, operators, and investors alike," he said. Visit Malaysia 2026 is not just another promotional campaign, Ahmad Zahid said. "It is a national agenda to position tourism at the heart of Malaysia's economic and cultural growth," he said. Ahmad Zahid added that there are five key pillars at the heart of Visit Malaysia 2026: sustainability, culture and heritage, adventure and nature, digital innovation, and global connectivity. "These pillars reflect the evolving values of today's travellers, particularly from markets like the UK. Travellers seek experiences that are real, enriching, and responsible," he said. Malaysia will roll out flagship programmes, such as the Malaysia Mega Sale and the World Tourism Day & Conference, to amplify its vibrancy globally. Visitors will discover a country rich in contrast and character, he said. KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had the opportunity to visit the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, yesterday afternoon, before His Majesty departed for Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei yesterday. Anwar, through a post on his Facebook page, stated that Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah is in good condition and his recovery process is proceeding smoothly after being discharged from the National Heart Institute (IJN) last Saturday. 'May His Majesty be granted good health and continue to rule the Nation of Brunei Darussalam,' the post read. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah arrived in Malaysia on May 25 to attend the 46th Asean Summit and Related Summits, which took place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on May 26 and 27.
