Leverkusen suffer shock 2-0 home loss to Werder Bremen
LEVERKUSEN, Germany, March 8 (Reuters) - Bayer Leverkusen suffered a shock 2-0 home loss to Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga on Saturday to miss their chance to close in on leaders Bayern Munich.
The reigning champions, who lost 3-0 to Bayern Munich in their Champions League Round of 16 first leg on Wednesday, are on 53 points, with Bayern staying top on 61 despite their stunning 3-2 loss at home to VfL Bochum.
Visitors Werder, who had lost their previous five matches, took a surprise seventh-minute lead with Romano Schmid slotting in at the far post after a Leverkusen defensive error.
Aleix Garcia came agonisingly close to an equaliser for the hosts but his first-half stoppage time free kick bounced off the crossbar.
To make matters worse for Xabi Alonso's team, who host Bayern in the return leg on Tuesday, attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz suffered an ankle injury in the 54th minute and the Germany international had to be substituted.
Despite some late pressure but only a handful of chances, Leverkusen could not find the equaliser and it was Werder who scored again, in stoppage time with Justin Njinmah.

Club World Cup Supercomputer predicts shock winner and Chelsea misery
Chelsea and Manchester City will be knocked out of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup by the same shock opponent, a Supercomputer has projected. The revamped and expanded tournament kicks-off in the USA on Sunday, with the Premier League represented by the Blues and the Citizens after they won the Champions League in 2021 and 2023. Both English sides won the Club World Cup in its previous format but this will be a very different kettle of fish, with 32 teams hoping to reach the final in New Jersey on July 13. Real Madrid and PSG are the bookies favourites but a Supercomputer conducted by BoyleSports, who offer the latest Club World Cup odds, surprisingly predicts a different European team will emerge victorious. In its prediction, both Premier League sides are predicted to make it through the group stage but not as group winners. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. Despite getting a favourable draw in Group D, Chelsea will finish behind African club Esperance de Tunis but ahead of MLS side Los Angeles FC and Flamengo of Brazil. As for City, they will beat Morocco's Wydad AC and Al Ain from the UAE, but finish behind Italian giants Juventus in Group G. Into the knockout stage and City are predicted to navigate an incredibly different run of fixtures to make the final, defeating Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Juventus. But Chelsea's tournament comes to an abrupt end as they after knocked out 3-1 by Benfica and it is the Portuguese side who advance to the final after also beating Porto and Bayern Munich. The Citizens would surely to be favourites to win such a final but the supercomputer predicts a shock upset, with Benfica winning 2-1 to be crowned champions of the world. This projection is a huge surprise given that Benfica have won just one Primeira Liga title in the last five years and their last European trophy came way back in 1962. Bruno Lage's side qualified for the Club World Cup as the seventh-best ranked eligible team in the UEFA four-year ranking. Chelsea vs Los Angeles (June 16, 8pm, Atlanta) Man City vs Wydad (June 18, 5pm, Philadelphia) Flamengo vs Chelsea (June 20, 7pm, Philadelphia) Man City vs Al Ain (June 23, 2am, Atlanta) ES Tunis vs Chelsea (June 25, 2am, Philadelphia) Juventus vs Man City (June 26, 8pm, Orlando) They kick-off their tournament against Boca Juniors on June 16 before taking on Auckland City and Bayern Munich in a tough Group C. More Trending According to BoyleSports: 'The Club World Cup Supercomputer is a probability model, not determined by human predictions or bias. 'What happens is the Supercomputer estimates the outcome of each remaining fixture based on a team's current strength (based on factors such as league position and form) and betting market odds. 'The machine then simulates the remaining games in a season 10,000 times and constructs an average league table from the 10,000 simulations, to rule out anomalous results.' Next Brentford manager odds make little-known candidate favourite
The favourite to be Brentford's next manager would not only be taking his first role in charge of a Premier League club, but in charge of any club at all. Thomas Frank is the hot favourite to become the next Tottenham boss after the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou. The Dane has been in charge of the Bees since 2018 and done a fantastic job, leading them up from the Championship and establishing them as a consistent force in the Premier League. He now looks set to move on, with Spurs making him their number one target and Frank recognising the opportunity to take charge of the Europa League winners who will return to the Champions League next season. A deal is far from done, but if Frank does indeed move across London to take charge of Spurs, he will need to be replaced. The favourite with the bookmakers to be the next Bees boss is a well established coach, but will be a new name to many Premier League fans. Justin Cochrane has been on the coaching staff with the Brentford first team since July 2022 and took up a second role with the England senior team in February this year. On that appointment in February, he said: 'It's an honour to be asked to work for the senior men's national team,' said Cochrane. 'This is a really exciting opportunity for me and I'm extremely grateful to Brentford for allowing me to take on this role.' Cochrane had a 13-year playing career in the lower leagues but has stepped up a level after moving into coaching. He worked in the Tottenham academy, coached England up to Under-17 level, then became head of player development and coaching at Manchester United in 2021. Now after his time as Frank's assistant and working with Thomas Tuchel, he is being tipped to take over the top job at Brentford. Justin Cochrane 4/7 Kieran McKenna 7/2 Kjetil Knutsen 8/1 Danny Rohl 8/1 Michael Carrick 12/1 Edin Terzic 16/1 Steven Gerrard 16/1 Sean Dyche 16/1 Steve Copper 16/1 Gary O'Neil 16/1 Marco Rose 16/1 Odds courtesy of BetVictor BetVictor make Cochrane the runaway favourite, with other candidates lagging a long way behind in the betting. Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna is second-favourite, with Bodo/Glimt boss Kjetil Knutsen next in line. Other managers considered potential contenders include Danny Rohl and Michael Carrick, while the likes of Steve Cooper, Edin Terzic and Marco Rose are outsiders. Negotiations are ongoing between Spurs and Brentford over a deal for Frank. The BBC report that a compensation package could exceed £10m and will rise further if Frank wants to take members of his staff with him. A deal looks likely to be struck, though, with reports even suggesting that Frank is already trying to influence transfer policy at Tottenham. With Bryan Mbeumo a target for Manchester United this summer, Frank has reportedly told Spurs to do their best to beat the Red Devils to sign the Brentford forward.
