Rassie weighs in on Springbok's controversial ‘Winkgate' saga
Rassie Erasmus has reacted to the 'Winkgate' incident, defending Springbok Jaden Hendrikse and emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship and respect.
In extremely unusual circumstances on Saturday, the Sharks progressed to the URC semi-final after a goal-kicking 'shootout' that featured Springbok duo Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse and rookie Bradley Davids.
After both regulation and extra time, the scores remained level between the Sharks and Munster at Kings Park, meaning the game had to be decided by three kickers from each side.
In the end, the Sharks nailed all six of their shots at goal from various positions around the field, while just the solitary miss from Munster sent them out of the competition.
However, there was a controversial moment midway through the 'shootout' when Springbok Jaden Hendrikse went down with what seemed to be cramp, but as he lay on the floor receiving treatment, the camera showed him giving a cheeky wink to opposing kicker Jack Crowley.
It led to a furious response from Crowley amid some allegations online that Hendrikse had 'faked' the cramps and attempted to put off his opponent with gamesmanship.
In its report, the UK Telegraph called it 'shameless gamesmanship' from the Sharks and said the quarter-final would always be 'remembered for actions of Sharks' Jaden Hendrikse'.
In response to the backlash, Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus and several others came to the defence of Hendrikse, suggesting it was a comical moment that showed character.
Erasmus, in trademark style, shared a zoomed-in image of the Springbok's cramping calf, paired with a puzzled emoji; suggesting that he believes the player did indeed suffer from cramp and was not faking an injury to rattle the Munster kickers.

Sharks come up for air before Loftus semifinal battle
Drained after an energy-sapping win over Munster, the Sharks are planning to adjust their training schedule to draw breath before Saturday's semifinal battle against the Bulls, coach John Plumtree said. The Sharks and Irish powerhouses Munster were level at 24-all at the end of normal time after a titanic United Rugby Championship quarterfinal tussle in Durban. Then, after 20 minutes of extra time, the teams remained deadlocked and a tiebreaker kickoff was required to decide the winner. Leinster will face the Glasgow Warriors in Saturday's first semifinal at Lansdowne Road in Dublin (3.45pm), after they defeated the Scarlets 33-21 in the other quarterfinal. The Loftus Versfeld clash, which is expected to attract a capacity 52,000 crowd, kicks off at 6.15pm. South Africans + Irishmen + rugby + Durban = 𝐃𝐑𝐀𝐌𝐀 🍿 — SuperSport Rugby (@SSRugby) June 3, 2025 'Even in my long career, I've never seen anything like that game against Munster,' Plumtree said. 'I'm exhausted. That was a tough 100-plus minutes. 'We will get the group together and see how everybody is doing. We might have to adjust our programme a little. 'I'm just glad we had those boys on the pitch kicking for goal: the Hendrikse brothers [Jordan and Jaden] and Bradley Davids, who came off the bench. The plan was to get Bradley on and sub Makazole Mapimpi. JP Pietersen was in the coaching box and was confident that Brad was going to do the job. 'It was a little frustrating it came down to that. It was never a plan we as coaches discussed during the week, but Neil Powell [Sharks director of rugby] had a pitch plan and knew which side the boys would be more comfortable on. And everyone was pretty calm in the coaching box. 🖤 "Having a brother that's always been with you from a young age is very special." The Hendrikse brothers stepped up in the shootout this weekend to help lead the Sharks into the #VURC semi-finals. 📺 Bulls vs Sharks | Saturday | 18:15 kick-off — SuperSport Rugby (@SSRugby) June 3, 2025 'I was hopeful it wouldn't get to that, because during the first half of extra time, we dominated territory and possession, but didn't take the opportunities. I was a little frustrated, and as I said, it shouldn't have come down to placekicking. 'However, there were a lot of tired bodies, and I am proud of how everyone kept calm and trusted the plan. 'Though we were calm in the change rooms — we've been in that spot the last few weeks — we needed to tidy up a few things. The main issue was that when we got momentum, we played too deep. In the second half, we started playing a little flatter and were a bit more dangerous. 'I thought we were the best attacking team out there, even if we didn't take all our opportunities. So it puts us in good stead for next week.' Sharks skipper Eben Etzebeth thanked his goal-kickers for keeping cool heads when the pressure was on. 34 years 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐆 🐍 Makazole Mapimpi was at his brilliant best as the Sharks secured their spot in the semi-finals. He carried 183 metres and beat 6 Munster defenders 😤 #VURC | @Vodacom — SuperSport Rugby (@SSRugby) June 2, 2025 'I thought it would be over before the 100 minutes,' he said. 'And then going to goal kicks. I don't know how those guys felt. 'Having to take those kicks must be very stressful. Thank goodness, we won that lottery.' Davids said he spent extra hours training to perfect his kicking drill. 'We kick a lot against each other to see — if Jordan gets injured — who will take over,' he said. 'We always challenge each other to see who's kicking the best in training. Luckily, it came off tonight. 'My girlfriend gets fed up with me because I always want to do extra kicks after training. She brings her work along to the side of the field. 'Credit to her for coming along and watching me kick. We actually do a shot clock and kick under pressure and fatigue.' The Herald

One young star set for breakthrough year with Springboks
As the Springboks' 2025 season draws ever closer, Rassie Erasmus has made it clear that this will be another year in which he expands the depth available to the national team by balancing game-time between seniors and newcomers. There are a number of youngsters knocking on the door, but someone who is undoubtedly kicking that door down is none other than Sharks star Ethan Hooker. The 22-year-old is just at the start of a promising career, but the Junior Springbok has already enjoyed a meteoric rise for the Sharks, establishing himself as a key member of a star-studded starting line-up in Durban. On his route to the senior set up, Hooker won the SA Rugby U20 Cup and also formed part of the SA U20 squad that claimed a bronze medal at the World Rugby U20 Championship. Boasting raw pace and power, the 1.94m and 100kg newcomer has since enjoyed a breakthrough season for the Sharks in the URC, boasting the ability to play on the wing or in the midfield. It's unlikely that the Springbok coaches will consider him at centre just yet, but there is every reason to believe his integration into Test rugby could come via the wing, where he has been in top form this past season. The Springboks are blessed with depth on the left wing, but it's on the right wing where the national coaches will be keen to explore some back up options to Cheslin Kolbe in order to manage his game time effectively. This is where Hooker could certainly come into the picture, with his work rate, physicality, size and speed ticking all the boxes that would surely appeal to Rassie Erasmus and his team. Take this to the bank, a breakthrough year beckons on the horizon for Ethan Hooker. Remember the name! 28 June: vs Barbarians, DHL Stadium, Cape Town. Cameron Hanekom crowned URC young star
Cameron Hanekom has been named the 2024-25 URC Next-Gen Player of the Season following a standout campaign as the Bulls chase a second-consecutive final appearance. The 22-year-old met the criteria for the award, which honours players aged 23 or under with no more than five international caps at the start of the season, and who played at least nine matches. He has featured regularly at No 8, while also offering versatility across the back row, and his performances have pushed him into the Springbok conversation for the upcoming international season. With Jasper Wiese sidelined due to injury, Hanekom is seen as a strong candidate to fill the vacancy in the national setup. Stormers lock Ruben van Heerden added to the South African accolades by claiming the Tackle Machine award, which recognises the competition's most effective defender. Hanekom was one of three Bulls players named in the URC Elite XV. He was joined by Wilco Louw and Jan-Hendrik Wessels. South Africa was further represented in the team of the season by Sharks centre Andre Esterhuizen, Scarlets hooker Marnus van der Merwe, Stormers Flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Leinster bruiser RG Snyman.
