Luis Suarez predicts MLS ‘surprise results' against tired European teams at Club World Cup
Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez believes European clubs are likely to suffer from fatigue at the Club World Cup and has predicted some 'surprise results'. The former Barcelona forward says the likes of Champions League-winners Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Manchester City are the favorites for the 32-team tournament in the U.S., but suggested MLS teams could take advantage of their tired legs after a 'long season' across the European calendar. Advertisement Miami, who are fronted by Suarez and Lionel Messi, face Al Ahly in the tournament's inaugural match at Hard Rock Stadium, home of the NFL's Miami Dolphins — on Saturday night — and will also play Porto and Palmeiras in Group A. 'Obviously the European clubs are more organized because of the club structure and the players that they have,' Suarez said on Friday. 'We should also note that they're coming here after a long season. It's getting longer for them. There are many tournaments that they've had to play and perhaps they'll arrive with some fatigue. 'But players will always want to play against Atletico Madrid, Paris (Saint-Germain) that have won it all. There's (Manchester) City, (Real) Madrid, Juventus, Inter (Milan), Bayern (Munich) are all really strong teams but I think there will be some surprise results. 'Let's hope it comes from our end but we know how difficult it's going to be.' The Uruguayan added: 'First of all, we have to enjoy this opportunity to play in a Club World Cup. 'Some of the more veteran players on the team have already had that fortune, and the players who haven't should try to enjoy it and take advantage of the important showcase that it is in order to grow as a player and show their quality. 'That's important if they want to continue to develop as footballers.' Miami's younger core includes Venezuelan international Telasco Segovia, 22, Federico Redondo, 22, academy product Benjamin Cremaschi, 20, among others. Suarez and Messi, along with Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, are the elder statesmen of a Miami team that has been through growing pains since their launch in 2020. The young club has tasted some success since Messi and his former Barcelona team-mates came to MLS. In 2024 they won the Supporters' Shield which is awarded to the club that earns the most points in the MLS regular season. Miami also set the points record that season, before a shock elimination in the first round of the league play-offs. Advertisement In May, Busquets told DAZN: 'It's clear that we're not at the level to compete at the Club World Cup.' Head coach Javier Mascherano has echoed that sentiment lately, notably during a stretch of poor form in April and May that saw Miami win just once in eight matches. Asked about Busquets' comments, Suarez said: 'Competing is in our DNA and we'll always have that, but you can't always win, can you? 'Maybe things won't go the way we want them to but we're going to try to play as well as possible, compete in every match and play for the best result. That's what we want. 'We understand the difficulties that a tournament like this can present, seeing as how the biggest clubs in the world are here. 'We know it's going to be difficult. We'll do the best we possibly can.' Despite Suarez's hope that Miami's young players will step up during the Club World Cup, the tournament will give global viewers a glimpse of how his former Barcelona teammates are fairing in their late thirties. Messi has 10 goals and 6 assists in 13 MLS games, while Busquets remains an important tempo-setter and a key organizational piece in Mascherano's midfield. Alba has continued to be played as an attacking full-back. Meanwhile 38-year-old Suarez, after scoring 20 goals last season, has not been as effective in front of goal in 2025, finding the net just five times in 13 appearances in MLS — but registering seven assists. He hopes the four veterans can take advantage of their history and intimacy to deliver at the tournament. 'We're lucky enough to know each other very well,' Suarez said. 'On the pitch and obviously off it, everyone knows the relationship that we all have, but on the pitch it gives us an advantage. 'There are times that we know where the other is moving without even looking. That's a benefit of knowing each other so well, of playing together for so long. We have to take advantage of that.'

Spaun has one win in his PGA Tour history and one win in the Korn Ferry Tour in his career history thus far. Spaun has never survived the cut before at the US Open, so for him to be leading after the first round is a fun early underdog story at the 2025 US Open Golf Championship. Meanwhile, South African golfer Thriston Lawrence sits in second place at three under par with two others, Kim Si Woo and Im Sung-jae, at three under par. Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka is lurking just behind at one under par. Koepka has won the US Open Championship twice in two years, 2017 and 2018, so he's a golfer to watch heading into the weekend. Tied with Koepka for fifth is two-time major champion Jon Rahm, who has won one US Open Championship in his career, which came back in 2021. Rahm also won the Masters in 2023, so he's another golfer who could make a move up the leaderboard this weekend, starting with Friday's second round. George Kambosos Jr vs Richardson Hitchins start time, card and how to watch fight
When George Kambosos Jr and Richardson Hitchins square off this weekend, a world title, unbeaten record, and pride will be on the line. Kambosos Jr aims to become a two-weight world champion here, as the former unified lightweight title-holder challenges Hitchins for the IBF super-lightweight belt. Advertisement The undefeated Hitchins (19-0, 7 knockouts) claimed the gold by earning a split-decision win over Australia's Liam Paro in December, and now he duels with another Aussie. The 27-year-old will do so in New York City, his hometown, against a man with whom he has conjured bad blood in Kambosos Jr (22-3, 10 KOs). Thursday's press conference saw Kambosos Jr, 31, shove the American, who had taunted him over a $50,000 bet, before insults were exchanged. Then, Kambosos Jr's father appeared to strike Hitchins's trainer with a microphone, leading the latter to grab a chair in an apparent effort to throw it across the stage. However, he was thwarted by Hitchins, before promoter Eddie Hearn cancelled the planned face-off. So, here's all you need to know about the upcoming grudge match. When is the fight? Kambosos Jr vs Hitchins will take place on Saturday 14 June at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City. Advertisement The main card will begin at 1am BST on Sunday (5pm PT / 7pm CT / 8pm ET on Saturday), with main-event ring walks expected at 4.25am BST on Sunday (8.25pm PT / 10.25pm CT / 11.25pm ET on Saturday).
