Dakin Humane Society in Springfield awarded large grant for facility upgrade
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Dakin Humane Society has been awarded a $100,000 grant for a vital HVAC upgrade.

The nonprofit animal shelter states that the grant was awarded from the John T. and Jane A. Wiederhold Foundation, a supporting organization of the Northwest CT Community Foundation. The grant will be put towards a capital improvement project for Dakin's facility, and will specifically be used for replacing an aging cooling tower and condenser water pumps for the building's HVAC system.
The system is important for climate control and to create a healthy environment for animals, maintaining stable temperatures to minimize stress and promote overall animal health. It also provides optimum air quality for people working in and visiting the building.
'We're grateful to the John T. and Jane A. Wiederhold Foundation, a supporting organization of the Northwest CT Community Foundation, for their continued, generous support of Dakin. The foundation understands that our facility is critical to our operations and capital funding for this type of project is not easy to secure. Many of our major mechanical systems, including HVAC, are original to the building which was constructed nearly thirty years ago. Being able to replace our cooling tower and pumps will enable our building's HVAC system to operate at peak efficiency during the warmer months when we are busiest, and provide a comfortable setting for our many animals, employees, and volunteers.'

LUDLOW, Mass. (WWLP) – A Ludlow police officer was able to rescue a fawn on Chapin Street overnight. Baby skunks rescued in Pittsfield: What should you do if you get 'skunked' The Ludlow Police Department states that an officer, during his overnight shift, came across a fawn lying in the road on Chapin Street. Once an Animal Control Officer (ACO) arrived, they determined that the fawn was only a few days old. The fawn's mother was spotted nearby, but was separated by a six-foot fence that the fawn could not cross. The officer was concerned that human contact might cause the mother to reject the fawn; however, the ACO told the officer that this is a common myth. The officer carefully used a blanket to pick up the fawn and reunite it with its mother. Flags half-staff to honor Massachusetts airman killed during World War II
BOSTON (WWLP) – Governor Maura Healey has ordered all U.S. and Massachusetts flags to be lowered to half-staff on Saturday. The order was issued to honor Staff Sergeant Loring E. Lord of Somerville, who served in the U.S. Army Air Forces 642d Bombardment Squadron, 409th Bombardment Group, 9th Bombardment Division, 9th Air Force, during World War II. Lord was a gunner aboard an A-26B 'Invader', when his aircraft was hit by heavy anti-aircraft fire during a bombardment mission to Germany in March 1945. WWII bomber crash left 11 dead and 'non-recoverable.' 4 are finally coming home Those aboard the aircraft were buried in a cemetery in Germany. The remains were later discovered in 2018 and taken to a laboratory for analysis and identification. Lord's remains were identified in September 2024, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. Loring was born in Somerville in 1916 and enlisted in the Army Air Forces during World War II. His remains were returned to Massachusetts on May 29th. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett. American flags and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts flags are ordered to be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Saturday in his honor. People celebrated the milestone with former and current coworkers who continue to serve the city of Springfield.
