Pan Pacific Orchard isn't just a Singapore landmark – the Woha Architects-designed hotel harnesses nature and sustainability to offer a true haven of tranquillity in the heart of the city
Since its opening in mid-2023, Pan Pacific Orchard has become one of Singapore's most photographed buildings. It's not unusual to see tourists stop in their tracks as they walk along buzzy Orchard Road – Singapore's main shopping thoroughfare – to take photos of the imposing structure.
The brainchild of Singapore-based firm Woha Architects, which is also behind properties such as Bali's stunning Alila Villas Uluwatu and Singapore's Park Royal on Pickering, Pan Pacific Orchard was conceived to adhere to the principles of biophilic design. The concept involves bringing natural elements into human-built environments to promote mindfulness and well-being in a harmonious combination of natural and built spaces.

You just have to look at the exterior of the hotel to get an idea of how this works: four terraces – each meant to represent Singapore's microclimates and ecosystems – anchor the building, creating different environments for guests to experience. The Forest Terrace echoes Singapore's rainforests and the Beach Terrace its coastal landscape. The Garden Terrace is a nod to Singapore's lush greenery, while the Cloud Terrace pays homage to its modern skyline.
Lest you think these concepts are only gimmicky design flourishes, the property is also serious about sustainability: more than 14,000 square metres of the property are made of greenery; rainwater is harvested and used in irrigation systems; 360 photovoltaic panels help generate energy; and food waste is transformed into cleaning water.

Meant as an urban oasis and a haven of tranquillity in the heart of Singapore's happening shopping district, the hotel attracts a good number of visitors, including families, who enjoy facilities such as the popular lagoon-style pool, not to mention its buzzy eateries, including Mosella, which offers a delightful Mediterranean menu. More casual Pacific Breeze is a great spot for a drink or local fare such as chicken rice and laksa.

The accommodations, however, are real cocoons of calm. Make sure to book one of the balcony rooms or suites. The property's open-air terraces, furnished with comfy sofa lounges, are great spots to relax after a day exploring the city in the heat. Staying true to the hotel's sustainability efforts, each room comes with drinking water fountains and glass bottles, while bathroom amenities are courtesy of Jo Loves, the brand founded by beauty maven Jo Malone after leaving her eponymous company.

Hongkongers may have to pay higher tolls at Aberdeen Tunnel, Shing Mun Tunnels
Hongkongers may have to pay more to use the Aberdeen Tunnel and the Shing Mun Tunnels under a government proposal to raise tolls from HK$5 (64 US cents) to HK$8 to help recoup some of their hefty annual losses, the Post has learned. The tunnels' current flat fee of HK$5 for all vehicles has remained unchanged for 34 years. A source said on Thursday that authorities were planning to raise the toll to HK$8. The Shing Mun Tunnels recorded a deficit of HK$52 million in the 2023-24 financial year, while the Aberdeen Tunnel recorded a HK$16 million loss. The government's earlier forecasts indicated that the deficits would continue, with estimated shortfalls of HK$52 million and HK$21 million, respectively, this financial year. The source added that officials had also consulted legislators on toll options for the Yau Ma Tei tunnel section of the Central Kowloon Bypass, which is expected to open by the end of the year. Various options were being considered, including toll-free access and fees of HK$10 or HK$17.

WeChat Pay records fourfold rise in mainland tourist taxi payments in Hong Kong
WeChat Pay Hong Kong has recorded a fourfold increase in mainland Chinese tourist payments for taxi services in the city from last year and growing usage among locals and visitors alike, according to parent company Tencent. Vice-President of Tencent Financial Technology Daniel Hong Danyi said on Thursday that the number of transactions from mainland tourists paying for taxi fares through WeChat Pay had seen a fourfold increase year on year. 'We saw that previously, many mainland tourists coming to Hong Kong realised taxis here do not support mainland payment methods. So over the past year, we spent a lot of time and effort to enable more taxi drivers to accept payments from WeChat,' he said. The platform has been offering taxi drivers perks such as zero handling fees, including for customer transactions and moving money into bank accounts. Hong added more than 20,000 taxi drivers across the city now accept both the local WeChat Pay HK accounts and the mainland version, contributing to an overall significant rise in transaction volume. The tech giant also reported growth in the adoption of its 'mini programs' by Hong Kong merchants, which doubled year on year in both usage and transaction amounts throughout the first five months of 2025. Mini programs are apps that run within the WeChat ecosystem, providing a range of functionalities, including e-commerce, travel booking, and local services, without requiring users to download a separate app or exit the platform.

Customs works with University of Hong Kong to develop crypto transaction tracer
Hong Kong customs is working with the University of Hong Kong to develop a tool that can trace cryptocurrency transactions, as the department in recent years had recorded seven suspected money laundering cases involving more than HK$9 billion (US$1.1 billion) where virtual assets were used. Advertisement Mario Wong Ho-yin, assistant commissioner for intelligence and investigation of the Customs and Excise Department, said on Thursday that the organisation would ramp up collaborations with academics, finance and virtual asset industry players, and law enforcement across the region to combat cross-border money laundering. 'These money laundering threats are characterised by a transnational and borderless nature, and no single agency can tackle this problem alone,' he said. Wong also warned that illegal transactions and trades that used virtual assets, such as cryptocurrency, were on the rise. He revealed that among the 39 money laundering cases reported to the department between 2021 and May this year, seven involved the use of virtual assets to launder suspected crime proceeds. Advertisement Those seven cases involved more than HK$9 billion and were mostly trade-based money laundering cases, with the funds being transferred under the guise of normal trading activity. Last April, three people were arrested in connection with one of the cases, which involved more than 1,000 suspicious transactions worth HK$1.8 billion linked to five companies and 18 local bank accounts.
