Sales Manager Loses Over RM300,000 To Online Investment Scam
SEREMBAN, June 14 (Bernama) -- A sales manager of a factory in Nilai near here lost RM389,000 to an online investment scam on Facebook recently.
Nilai district police chief Supt Abdul Malik Hasim said the man, in his late 40s, claimed to have dealt with an individual offering the investment scheme on April 19 before he was asked to download an app on his mobile phone.
'He then transferred money to six accounts provided by the individual through nine transactions totalling RM389,000 for investment, but realised he had been deceived when he couldn't access the app anymore and could not withdraw his profits,' he said in a statement tonight, adding that the victim then lodged a police report at 2.50 pm today.

He stressed the need for a comprehensive assessment to determine whether people can sustain the expanded SST rates, which will take effect next month. 'Our economy is still well on its road to recovery, with micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) remain struggling. Now that SST rates are to be reviewed and expanded, consumers and people at large will be suffering,' he told his Facebook live session 'Shall WEE Talk' yesterday. Wee pointed out that when the government increases SST rates, the increasing costs are eventually borne by consumers, particularly affecting those in lower-income brackets who will have to spend more to maintain their livelihoods. He urged the government to strike a balance between broadening its tax-based system and ensuring that people do not struggle to make ends meet. He cautioned that any tax reviews that could lead to 'spiral effects to the economy' must be done 'prudently and with the people's well-being at heart'. 'Is it timely to implement reviewed and expanded SST rates at this stage? Are our people prepared to face another spate of rising costs of living? Wee questioned, adding: 'You can take a stroll in the local wet markets where petty traders unanimously state that their businesses are not doing well.' According to the Mayor, while businesses with strong cash flow might manage the new SST rates, many MSMEs especially less established ones, 'may face risk of closure', potentially leading to unemployment. Wee advised the government against solely focusing on revenue-generating, urging them to consider the financial difficulties people are currently facing. 'If more and more MSMEs close down, we will be seeing more jobless persons, and unemployment can be a nasty issue. 'No doubt that we are not economists but we have been on the ground, well aware of what traders and people are being put through,' he said. Akmal torn over Yusoff Rawther's alleged Israel support
UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has mixed feelings towards Yusoff Rawther who is embroiled in a sexual assault case against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, but he is not willing to offer support. He stated that the reason for this is Yusoff's previous open support for Israel, which alone meant that the young man would not receive much attention from UMNO Youth. 99 arrested in Immigration raids on Kuantan nightspots
KUANTAN: A total of 99 foreign nationals, 85 of them women, were arrested in Immigration Department raids on entertainment premises here early Sunday (June 15). Pahang Immigration director Nursafariza Ihsan said they were among 369 individuals rounded up in the operation that began at 1am. She said those arrested involved Thai, Lao, Bangladeshi, Yemeni and Chinese nationals aged between 25 and 50, while most of the foreign women arrested worked as guest relations officers (GROs). Customers would book their time through various platforms, including the WeChat application. "Those arrested are suspected of misusing their work permits because, after checks, we found that most of them were permit holders in the construction and cleaning sectors, while some only had social visit passes,' she said when contacted.
