
Mathematician Adam Kucharski: ‘Our concepts of what we can prove are shifting'
Adam Kucharski is a professor at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. As a mathematician and epidemiologist, he has advised multiple governments on outbreaks such as Ebola and Covid. In his new book Proof: The Uncertain Science of Certainty, he examines how we can appraise evidence in our search for the truth.
What inspired you to investigate the concept of proof?Alice Stewart, an influential epidemiologist, used this nice phrase that 'truth is the daughter of time'. But in many situations, whether you're accused of a crime or thinking about a climate crisis, you don't want to wait; there's an urgency to accumulate evidence and set a bar for action. We're entering an era where questions around information – what we trust and how we act – are increasingly important, and our concepts of what we can prove are shifting as well.
You examined the ways that mathematical proofs have changed throughout history. What did you learn?I was so fascinated by the cultural differences in what people have assumed to be obvious. In Europe, for example, negative numbers were shunned for a very long time. That's because a lot of our maths was built around ancient Greek geometry, where something like a 'negative triangle' doesn't make sense. In contrast, a lot of the early mathematical theories in Asia were driven by finance and the concepts of debt, where negative numbers make a lot more sense, so they were much more comfortable handling those concepts.
I found that ideas like calculus were also based on physical intuitions about the world: an apple falls, and we can write down the equations that drive its motion. But when you started getting down into it, you could find exceptions where the intuitions weren't true. As a result, you had this tension with an entire community who wanted to ignore these nuisances – these 'monsters', as they called them – while other characters were pushing for an evolution of the field. Einstein's work on relativity, for example, relied on these controversial ideas.
In the book, you draw some parallels between these mathematical debates and the politics of the time.A lot of democratic ideas in the foundation of countries like the US attempted a kind of mathematical precision. The statement 'we hold these truths to be self-evident' in the US constitution was originally 'we hold these truths to be sacred', for example. But Benjamin Franklin crossed it out because he wanted more mathematical certainty behind these ideas, as if they were axioms. And in parallel with mathematics crumbling in its foundations, you saw the US descending into civil war, because the idea that all people are created equal wasn't self-evident to some people. You had the same tension manifesting in two different ways in two very different fields.
Tell me a bit about Abraham Lincoln. How was he influenced by mathematics in his rhetoric?Lincoln was renowned for his speeches and the precise nature of his arguments, and that didn't come about by coincidence. He made a conscious decision as a lawyer to get a better understanding of what it means to demonstrate something and construct an argument that is logically robust. So he went and taught himself the fundamentals of ancient Greek mathematics, Euclid's Elements, and he would deploy those principles in his debates. He took advantage of this notion that if you can find a flaw or contradiction, you can cause someone's entire argument to collapse.
You describe how some core concepts arose from casual conversations. How did the perfect cup of tea inspire the design of clinical trials?There was a tearoom in Rothamsted agricultural station in Hertfordshire, and in the early 1920s, three statisticians were having a conversation when one of them, Muriel Bristol, observed that tea always tastes better if the milk is put in before the hot water. The other people around the table disagreed, but they thought it was a nice challenge to see how you could work out whether she could tell the difference or not. In the end, they calculated that you need to lay out eight cups, in which half have the milk added before the hot water, and half after, ordered randomly. This produces around 70 possible combinations, meaning there is only a 1.4% chance that Bristol would get that out of all the possibilities correct – which she did.
One of the mathematicians was Ronald Fisher, who would end up writing a landmark book called The Design of Experiments that examined how you can separate an effect from chance or human biases – and this included the principle of randomisation and using probabilities to test the strength of a hypothesis.
How is AI changing our understanding of proof?A few years ago, I was at a dinner with a lot of AI specialists, and there was a lot of talk about the fact that AI is often more efficient if you don't worry about it providing an explanation for what it's doing or the decisions it makes. I found it interesting that this was a concern, because in medicine, we have a lot of things that work without us understanding why. One example is anaesthesia: we know the combination of drugs that makes a patient unconscious, but it's not clear why they do.
We've struggled with similar questions for a long time, right?In the 1970s, we had the first ever computer-aided proof of the four-colour theorem, which says that if you want to colour a map so that no two bordering countries have the same colour, you'll only need four colours to do this. Even if you simplify it down and you look for symmetries, there are still just too many combinations to go through by hand. But a pair of mathematicians used a computer to punch those combinations and get over the line. There was a lot of scepticism, because it was the first time that you had this major theorem that mathematicians couldn't verify by hand. But then, among the younger generation of mathematicians, there is scepticism about some of the old methods. Why would hundreds of pages of handwritten maths be more trustworthy than a computer?
I think that's going to be an important debate in the future, as algorithms become increasingly useful for the predictions they can make, even if we don't have an easy understanding of the way they work.
With the spread of misinformation, it may feel that many people have simply stopped caring about evidence. What do you think of this?There has been some interesting research looking at what people say they value online, versus what they actually do. If you ask people whether accuracy is important in what they share, they'll say they don't want to share things that are false. In the moment, however, they often get distracted: something triggers an emotional response, or aligns with political beliefs, and they share the information on those grounds, without checking the facts.
But there are lots of layers to this. In some cases, there can be an incentive to go against what authority says, if you want to suggest that you're not constrained by the thinking of the crowd. Henri Poincaré, a mathematician who did a lot of work in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, described something like this: 'To doubt everything or to believe everything are two equally convenient solutions; both dispense with the necessity of reflection.' And I think that's the danger, at the moment – that there's this almost excessive doubt. People are just disengaging with truth altogether.

A new variant now spreading across Europe and multiple other continents could leave people with a host of unpleasant symptoms - that don't feel like classic Covid Health officials have warned that people could experience a host of nasty and unusual symptoms if they contract the latest Coronavirus strain. The new variant, named NB.1.8.1, was designated a "SARS-CoV-2 variant under monitoring (VUM)" on May 23, one of six emerging variants currently under WHO monitoring. As of this month, it has crossed multiple continents, with cases flagged in the UK and Ireland in Europe, and further afield in the US and Australia. People have been urged to stay at home for days on end if they find they have symptoms of the new Covid variant, which are a far cry from the classic flu-like signs of their predecessors. While early signs of Covid once included symptoms like a severe cough, sore throat and high fever, NB.1.8.1 is felt most acutely in the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms of the variant include: Nausea Vomiting Diarrhoea Heartburn Bloating Constipation Abdominal pain Dr Lara Herrero, associate professor and virology research leader at Griffith University in Australia, explained in an article posted on The Conversation that the variant appears to be spreading faster than its predecessors. Of those, Dr Herrero said, it is most similar to subvariants of the Omicron lineage. She said: 'The evidence so far suggests NB.1.8.1 may spread more easily and may partially sidestep immunity from prior infections or vaccination. 'Reports suggest symptoms of NB.1.8.1 should align closely with other Omicron subvariants." The WHO has said the same, stating in its report that the variant has obtained a series of mutations that allow it both to spread easier and potentially evade antibody protections afforded to people by previous infections. The organisation explained: "Spike mutations at position 445 have been shown to enhance binding affinity to hACE2, which could increase the variant's transmissibility." It adds: "Mutations at position 435 shown to reduce the neutralisation potency of class 1 andclass 1/4 antibodies, and mutations at position 478 shown to enhance the evasion of Class 1/2 antibodies." People who exhibit any symptoms have been told to stay indoors by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) which advises people to "avoid contact with vulnerable people and stay at home if possible" for 48 hours.

New coronavirus only ‘one small step from spilling over into humans' and sparking widespread outbreak, say scientists

Scientists believe the variant, called HKU5-CoV-2, may infect a broader range of animals than Covid-19 and may have more potential for jumping between species. 1 Dr Michael Letko, a molecular virologist at WSU's College of Veterinary Medicine, lead the research into the concerning variant Credit: Ted S. Warren/College of Veterinary Medicine/WSU American scientists fear the virus - found in China - may be one small mutation away from also being able to infect humans, which could lead to a widespread outbreak. The new study, published in Nature Communications, looked at a lesser-known group of coronaviruses called merbecoviruses. It includes HKU5 and MERS-CoV, which is responsible for the deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. First noted in 2012, the virus typically spreads from infected camels to humans causes severe respiratory disease, which can be fatal to 34 per cent of its victims. The research team, which included scientists at Washington State University (WSU), the California Institute of Technology and the University of North Carolina, sought to understand how merbecoviruses infiltrate the cells of their hosts. While most bugs in the group seemed to pose little threat to people, scientists said one subgroup, HKU5, has concerning traits. Michael Letko, a virologist at WSU's College of Veterinary Medicine, said: "Merbecoviruses – and HKU5 viruses in particular – really hadn't been looked at much, but our study shows how these viruses infect cells. "What we also found is HKU5 viruses may be only a small step away from being able to spill over into humans." Like other coronaviruses, merbecoviruses rely on a spike protein to bind to receptors and invade host cells. Dr Letko's team used virus-like particles containing the part of the spike protein responsible for binding to receptors and tested their ability to infect cells in their lab. World is not prepared for looming Disease X pandemic says Doctor Tedros Ghebreyesus While most merbecoviruses appeared unlikely to be able to infect humans, HKU5 viruses — which have been found across Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East — were shown to use a host receptor known as ACE2, the same used by the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19. But for now HKU5 viruses can only use the ACE2 gene in bats and can't deploy it on humans nearly as well. Examining HKU5 viruses found in Asia - where their host is the Japanese house bat - the researchers demonstrated some mutations in the spike protein that may allow the viruses to bind to ACE2 receptors in other species, including humans. 'These viruses are so closely related to MERS, so we have to be concerned if they ever infect humans,' Dr Letko said. 'While there's no evidence they've crossed into people yet, the potential is there — and that makes them worth watching.' Dr Letko said the study and its methods could be used for future research projects and to help the development of new vaccines and treatments. What is the new Covid variant confirmed in the UK? The new strain - called NB.1.8.1 - has been spotted in the parts of the UK, such as Ireland and Wales. It's also cropped up in Europe, the US and Australia, as well as Egypt, the Maldives, Thailand, China and Hong Kong. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently issued a warning over NB.1.8.1, designating it as a "variant under monitoring" due to its global spread and key mutations. 'Despite a concurrent increase in cases and hospitalisations in some countries where NB.1.8.1 is widespread, current data do not indicate that this variant leads to more severe illness than other variants in circulation,' the WHO said. But while it may not be particularly severe, it may infect people more easily than previous variants, with some evidence suggesting that the variant binds more tightly to human cells. A recent study that has not yet been peer reviewed suggests that a person infected with NB.1.8.1 may be more likely to pass the virus on to someone else, compared to earlier variants. The WHO stressed that, based on available evidence, the variant's risk to public health was "low at the global level". "Currently approved Covid-19 vaccines are expected to remain effective to this variant against symptomatic and severe disease," it added. Symptoms include sore throat, fatigue, fever, mild cough, muscle aches and a blocked nose. Some people may also get gastrointestinal symptoms. It's not the first time concerns have been raised over HKU5. Earlier this year, Chinese scientists warned that HKU5-CoV-2 may be able to jump straight from bats to humans without another animal in between. This suggests a higher potential for zoonotic spillover - when a disease spreads from animal to human. If there is no 'intermediate 'middle animal', it becomes harder to predict and prevent spillover events through interactions such as wildlife trading or hunting. "There is the potential for this new virus to spillover to human, like previous coronaviruses including SARS-CoV-2," said Dr Gary R McLean, a research fellow at the Imperial College London, who was not involved in the study. But he noted that, so far, there is no "evidence" that HKU5-CoV-2 can infect people – the paper is based on tests in a laboratory, showing the bug's "potential". "Hopefully the Chinese authorities now have good surveillance systems in place and the laboratories work to rigid safety standards that minimise the risk of spillover occurring," he said. The WHO has previously listed MERS and Covid as two of several diseases - alongside the mysterious disease X - that could spark a pandemic, but for which there is no specific treatment or vaccine.

All we know about Covid variant LP.8.1.1 spreading across England
Around 30 per cent of Covid cases in May were linked to the LP.8.1.1 variant Almost a third of Covid cases in England are linked to a specific variant, with people aged 80 and over most affected. The most recent data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), shows that around 30 per cent of coronavirus cases are caused by the LP.8.1.1 strain. Figures from between April 28 and May 11 revealed that 29.91 per cent of COVID-19 cases were classified as LP.8.1.1. This variant is a sublineage of LP.8.1, which is descended from Omicron. LP.8.1 was first detected in July 2024. It was designated as a 'variant under monitoring' by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in January. In the most recent report, LP.8.1 was also identified in England, accounting for 16.82 per cent of cases. Other variants linked to recent cases of Covid as documented by the UKHSA include JN.1 (14 per cent), XFG (12.5 per cent), XEC (11 per cent), MC.21.1 (5.6 per cent), KP.3.1.1 (2.8 per cent), and XDV (2.8 per cent). The UKHSA added that the highly transmissible NB.1.8.1 was detected in England at the same time, but has a 'low prevalence'. It said: 'There are currently 13 sequences of NB.1.8.1 in England, currently represented by its parent lineage XDV in Figure 4 due to low prevalence.' The update showed that between May 26 and June 1, referred to as week 22, cases of Covid slightly increased in England. People aged 80 and over were most affected by this rise. 'In week 22, 3,833 respiratory specimens reported through the Respiratory DataMart System were tested for SARS-CoV-2,' the UKHSA said. 'There were 219 positive samples for SARS-CoV-2. SARS-CoV-2 positivity increased slightly to 5.7 per cent compared with five per cent in the previous week, with the highest positivity in those aged 80 years and over at 7.4 per cent.' Hospital admissions due to Covid also rose that week. The overall weekly hospital admission rate for COVID-19 slightly increased to 1.49 (compared with 1.40 per 100,000 in the previous week). Hospital admission rates for COVID-19 were highest in the London region (increasing to 2.98 per 100,000 compared with 1.91 in the previous week). The highest hospital admission rate for COVID-19 was in those aged 85 years and over (slightly decreasing to 11.46 per 100,000 compared with 12.07 in the previous week). But the overall intensive care unit or high dependency unit rate for COVID-19 remained low at 0.04 per 100,000 (compared with 0.02 per 100,000 in the previous week). Symptoms It is not known if LP.8.1.1 causes any particular symptoms. Thomas Jeffries, a senior lecturer in microbiology at Western Sydney University, noted that its parent LP.8.1 has not seemed to lead to particularly severe symptoms. Writing for The Conversation, he said: 'Notably, the symptoms of LP.8.1 don't appear to be any more severe than other circulating strains. And the WHO has evaluated the additional public health risk LP.8.1 poses at a global level to be low. 'What's more, LP.8.1 remains a variant under monitoring, rather than a variant of interest or a variant of concern. In other words, these changes to the virus with LP.8.1 are small, and not likely to make a big difference to the trajectory of the pandemic.' The NHS lists Covid symptoms as: A high temperature or shivering (chills) – a high temperature means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature) A new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours A loss or change to your sense of smell or taste Shortness of breath Feeling tired or exhausted An aching body A headache A sore throat A blocked or runny nose Loss of appetite Diarrhoea Feeling sick or being sick. If you experience symptoms, the NHS advises staying home until you feel better. If you test positive for Covid, the NHS recommends staying home and avoiding contact with others for five days.
