Can AI help you win your March Madness bracket? One disruptor bets $1 million on ‘yes' (and Houston)

DENVER (AP) — Perhaps the surest sign that artificial intelligence really is taking over the world will come the day it wins your favorite March Madness bracket pool.
The day could be coming soon.
In an experiment that a) was bound to happen, b) might actually make us all look smarter and c) should probably also scare the daylights out of everyone, a successful CEO-turned-disruptor is running a $1 million March Madness bracket challenge that pits his AI programmers' picks against those belonging to one of the world's best-known sports gamblers.
'We're not a crystal ball,' says Alan Levy, whose platform, 4C Predictions, is running this challenge. 'But it's going to start to get very, very creepy. In 2025, we're making a million-dollar bet with a professional sports bettor, and the reason we feel confident to do that is because data, we feel, will beat humans.'
Levy isn't the only one leveraging AI to help people succeed in America's favorite pick 'em pool — one that's become even more lucrative over the past seven years, after a Supreme Court ruling led to the spread of legalized sports betting to 38 states.
ChatGPT, a chatbot developed by OpenAI, is hawking its services to help bracket fillers more easily find stats and identify trends. Not surprisingly, it makes no promises.
'With upsets, momentum shifts, and basketball's inherent unpredictability, consistently creating a perfect bracket may still come down to luck,' said Leah Anise, a spokesperson for OpenAI.
Also making no promises, but trying his hardest, is Sheldon Jacobson, the computer science professor at Illinois who has been trying to build a better bracket through science for years; he might have been AI before AI.
'Nobody predicts the weather,' he explained in an interview back in 2018. 'They forecast it using chances and odds.'
$1 million on the line in AI vs. Sean Perry showdown
Levy's angle is he's willing to wager $1 million that the AI bracket his company produces can beat that of professional gambler Sean Perry.
Among Perry's claims to fame was his refusal to accept a four-way split in a pot worth $9.3 million in an NFL survivor pool two years ago. The next week, his pick, the Broncos, lost to New England and he ended up with nothing.
But Perry has wagered and won millions over his career, using heaps of analytics, data and insider information to try to find an edge that, for decades, has been proprietary to casinos and legal sports books, giving them an advantage that allows them to build all those massive hotels.
Levy says his ultimate goal is bring that advantage to the average Joe — either the weekly football bettor who doesn't have access to reams of data, or the March Madness bracket filler who goes by feel or what team's mascot he likes best.
'The massive thesis is that the average person are playing games that they can never win, they're trading stocks where they can never win, they're trading crypto where they can never win,' Levy said. '4C gives people the chance to empower themselves. It's a great equalizer. It's going to level the playing field for everyone.'
But can AI predict the completely unexpected?
It's one thing to find an edge, quite another to take out every element of chance — every halfcourt game-winner, every 4-point-a-game scorer who goes off for 25, every questionable call by a ref, every St. Peter's, Yale, FAU or UMBC that rises up and wins for reasons nobody quite understands.
For those who fear AI is leading the world to bad places, Levy reassures us that when it comes to sports, at least, the human element is always the final decider — and humans can do funny and unexpected things.
That's one of many reasons that, according to the NCAA, there's a 1 in 120.2 billion chance of a fan with good knowledge of college basketball going 63 for 63 in picking the games. It's one of many reasons that almost everyone has a story about their 8-year-old niece walking away with the pot because she was the only one who picked George Mason, or North Carolina State, or VCU, to make the Final Four.
'You can't take the element of fun and luck out of it,' Levy said. 'Having said that, as AI develops, it's going to get creepier and creepier and the predictions are going to get more and more accurate, and it's all around data sets.'
Levy suggests AI is no three-headed monster, but rather, an advanced version of 'Moneyball' — the classic book-turned-movie that followed Oakland A's GM Billy Beane's groundbreaking quest to leverage data to build a winning team.
Now, it's all about putting all that data on steroids, trying to minimize the impact of luck and glass slippers, and building a winning bracket.
'We've got to understand that this technology is meant to augment us,' Levy said. 'It's meant to make our lives better. So, let's encourage people to use it, and even if it's creepy, at least it's creepy on our side.'

FIFA Club World Cup interest muted in Philly amid immigration raid fears

The FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off Monday in Philadelphia, is being met with dampened enthusiasm nationwide as the Trump administration's immigration crackdown raises fears among fans. The big picture: The first-of-its-kind tourney spotlighting top professional teams across the globe serves as a precursor for when the U.S. hosts the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada. And 2026 organizers are already warning that immigration concerns may affect one of the world's most-watched sporting events, per the AP. State of play: Thousands of seats were still available for the club tournament nationwide, as of this week, which FIFA officials have attributed in part to fan concerns about their visa status, The New York Times reports. Visa wait times for several countries, like Colombia, extend beyond the 2026 World Cup. And FIFA has repeatedly lowered ticket prices for the Club World Cup due to poor sales. Friction point: U.S. Customs and Border Protection recently posted on social media that agents will be "suited and booted ready to provide security for the first round of games" for the Club World Cup, per The Athletic. The post was later removed after FIFA expressed concerns about it. Zoom in: Leading up to Monday night's first-round Club World Cup match in Philly at Lincoln Financial Field, excitement in the region appears somewhat muted. The prices of tickets to see Brazil's Flamengo face Tunisian club Espérance de Tunis at 9pm started at $27 as of Friday, per FIFA's official ticket site. And tickets on the secondary market were as cheap as $9. Between the lines: Fears about possible immigration raids forced Flamengo's fan clubs to cancel some watch parties and to shelve discussions of group travel to matches in Philly and Orlando, per the Times. Yes, but: Many supporters from Flamengo's fan clubs are still making the trek to Philly, with meetups and parties planned. What they're saying: Luis Bitencourt, president of Washington, D.C.'s, Flamengo chapter, tells Axios that he put out an advisory to fans heading to Philly, noting any misbehavior could attract unwanted attention.

Mexican FA accused of silencing clubs seeking promotion reinstatement

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Two Mexican clubs seeking to reinstate promotion and relegation say the Mexican Football Association is trying to silence and punish them after they appealed to sport's highest court. Last month, 10 of the 15 clubs in Mexico's second division filed the appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Since then, four of them have opted out leaving six in it: Leones Negros, Venados FC, Atlético Morelia, Cancún FC, Club Atlético La Paz and Mineros. Advertisement The FMF halted promotion in 2019 and agreed with the second division teams to reinstate it in 2026, but there are no current plans to do it and that is why the clubs went to CAS. 'We can't ascend to the first division because the league is kidnapped,' Giovanni Solazzi, the Cancún FC vice president said this week. 'If there is sporting justice, promotion must return.' Alberto Castellanos, the Leones Negros president, also criticized the federation for what he called 'monopolistic practices.' On Wednesday, the federation wrote to Solazzi and Castellanos informing them they were being investigated because their statements may have breached the code of ethics. The clubs could be fined up to 450,000 pesos (about $23,000), stated the letter, seen by the Associated Press. Advertisement 'The FMF is clearly pursuing an intimidatory process intended to silence and punish the clubs for appealing to CAS,' said Eduardo Carlezzo, the owner of the legal firm representing the clubs in the appeal. The owners of the 18 top flight teams voted to halt promotion and relegation for six seasons, arguing it would help to consolidate the second-division clubs. As a payoff, the second tier clubs share an $8 million pot. Since the CAS appeal, the second division teams claim they have not received any payments. 'The federation suspended the financial compensation the day after the appeal was launched and is now threatening disciplinary sanction over comment,' Carlezzo said. 'These actions constitute a serious and blatant infringement of the freedom of expression and the access to justice guaranteed by the Mexican constitution.' ___ AP soccer:

ChatGPT o3-pro is only available on $200+ plans – here's what you're missing

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, BGR may receive an affiliate commission. OpenAI just released a new ChatGPT model that's better and more reliable than its best reasoning models to date. ChatGPT o3-pro joins the list of AI chatbot options in the app, replacing the o1-pro model. As exciting as the new model is, however, most ChatGPT users don't have access to it… even if they pay for the Plus plan. If you're on ChatGPT Free or ChatGPT Plus ($20/month), you won't get access to OpenAI's new reasoning AI. ChatGPT o3-pro is coming to the $200/month ChatGPT Plus tier. ChatGPT Team users also have access to o3-pro, and Enterprise and Edu users will get the upgrade soon. Today's Top Deals Best deals: Tech, laptops, TVs, and more sales Best Ring Video Doorbell deals Memorial Day security camera deals: Reolink's unbeatable sale has prices from $29.98 There's some good news for ChatGPT Plus users, too. OpenAI has significantly reduced the costs for o3. As someone who chats with ChatGPT o3 almost exclusively, I definitely appreciate the improved efficiencies. It's not like I worried too often about running out of ChatGPT o3 chats, but it did happen. It's good to see OpenAI bring down costs for its frontier models. That means Plus users are getting better rate limits than before. OpenAI explained in its release notes that 'like o1-pro, o3-pro is a version of our most intelligent model, o3, designed to think longer and provide the most reliable responses.' o3-pro will excel in the same areas as o1-pro, including math, science, and coding. Like o3, o3-pro has access to various tools available in ChatGPT, including online search, file support, reasoning with visual prompts, coding (Python), and memory. It's not quite on par with o3, though. ChatGPT o3-pro doesn't have temporary chats for now, and it can't use the 4o image generation tool or the Canvas feature. What really matters here are the performance improvements, and o3-pro excels in all benchmarks OpenAI conducted. That's not surprising for a new frontier model. OpenAI wouldn't add the 'pro' suffix without ensuring o3-pro outperforms o3. The company also says that o3-pro is routinely favored by reviewers: In expert evaluations, reviewers consistently prefer o3-pro over o3 in every tested category and especially in key domains like science, education, programming, business, and writing help. Reviewers also rated o3-pro consistently higher for clarity, comprehensiveness, instruction-following, and accuracy. OpenAI's tests show an average win rate of 64% in favor of o3-pro when compared to o3. As I said before, I'm a ChatGPT Plus user who's quite happy with what I get for that monthly $20 fee. I can't justify going Pro, just as I can't downgrade to ChatGPT Free. I've been using o3 more and more lately, even if I have to fight with the AI sometimes. Naturally, I wondered whether I really needed the slightly better o3-pro performance and the reduced hallucination rate (aka improved accuracy). I don't think I'll miss much for now, and this o3-pro review that Sam Altman retweeted does a great job explaining where o3-pro shines and why ChatGPT Plus users might not need it. Here's a longer snippet that includes the detail Altman cited: The weekly limit for ChatGPT o3 chats sits at 100 messages for ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise users. Developers will appreciate the price drop the most. ChatGPT o3 input/output is priced at $2/$8 per 1 million tokens, down from $10/$40. But then I took a different approach. My co-founder Alexis and I took the time to assemble a history of all our past planning meetings at Raindrop, all our goals, even recorded voice memos, and then asked o3-pro to come up with a plan. We were blown away. It spit out the exact kind of concrete plan and analysis I've always wanted an LLM to create, complete with target metrics, timelines, priorities, and strict instructions on what to cut. The plan o3 gave us was plausible, reasonable. But the plan o3-pro gave us was specific and grounded enough that it actually changed how we're thinking about our future. This is hard to capture in an eval. That sounds amazing, but it's also something I don't need right now. I recommend reading the entire review to see the differences between o3 and o3-pro and decide for yourself. While I won't get o3-pro anytime soon, I'm glad to hear that operating costs for ChatGPT o3 queries have dropped significantly. Altman said on X that OpenAI has reduced the price of o3 by 80%. OpenAI's Kevin Weil tweeted that the company has doubled the rate limits for o3 in the Plus tier. That might not match the 80% drop in costs, but it's still a big improvement. The weekly limit for ChatGPT o3 chats remains at 100 messages for ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise users. Developers will appreciate the price drop the most. ChatGPT o3 input/output is now priced at $2/$8 per 1 million tokens, down from $10/$40. More Top Deals Amazon gift card deals, offers & coupons 2025: Get $2,000+ free See the
