Malaysia approves a new search for MH370 more than a decade after the plane disappeared

The Hill20-03-2025

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia's government has given final approval for a Texas-based marine robotics company to renew the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which is believed to have crashed in the southern Indian Ocean more than a decade ago.
Cabinet ministers agreed to terms and conditions for a 'no-find, no-fee' contract with Texas-based Ocean Infinity to resume the seabed search operation at a new 15,000-square-kilometer (5,800-square-mile) site in the ocean, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said in a statement Wednesday. Ocean Infinity will be paid $70 million only if wreckage is discovered.
The Boeing 777 plane vanished from radar shortly after taking off on March 8, 2014, carrying 239 people, mostly Chinese nationals, on a flight from Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur, to Beijing. Satellite data showed the plane turned from its flight path and headed south to the far-southern Indian Ocean, where it is believed to have crashed.
An expensive multinational search failed to turn up any clues to its location, although debris washed ashore on the east African coast and Indian Ocean islands. A private search in 2018 by Ocean Infinity also found nothing.
The final approval for a new search came three months after Malaysia gave the nod in principle to plans for a fresh search.
Ocean Infinity CEO Oliver Punkett earlier this year reportedly said the company had improved its technology since 2018. He has said the firm is working with many experts to analyze data and had narrowed the search area to the most likely site.
Loke said his ministry will ink a contract with Ocean Infinity soon but didn't provide details on the terms. The firm has reportedly sent a search vessel to the site and indicated that January-April is the best period for the search.
'The government is committed to continuing the search operation and providing closure for the families of the passengers of flight MH370,' he said in a statement.

Tesla's (TSLA) Full Self-Driving Could Expand in China Due to New Data Export Rules

China has released draft guidelines that could help EV maker Tesla (TSLA) expand its advanced driver-assistance features in the country, according to a Bloomberg report on Friday. For the first time, Beijing has provided clear rules on how data generated in China, including from driver-assistance systems and product development, can be accessed, used, and exported. This is an important step for companies like Tesla, which need to send data abroad in order to improve their systems. Confident Investing Starts Here: The proposed guidelines were published by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, along with seven other government agencies, and are now open for public comment. The framework covers key types of information, such as autonomous driving algorithms, training images, operational data, and vehicle-to-road perception data. These are all critical for developing and improving advanced driver-assistance technologies like Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. Being able to export this data is especially valuable for Tesla because the core team working on FSD is based in the U.S., and having access to real-world data from Chinese roads would help optimize the system's performance in China, the world's largest car market. It's worth noting that, until now, strict data controls have been a barrier for foreign automakers. However, the new guidelines could provide Tesla with a clearer path to making its most advanced driver-assistance features more competitive in China. What Is the Prediction for Tesla Stock? Overall, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on TSLA stock based on 14 Buys, 12 Holds, and nine Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. Furthermore, the average TSLA price target of $285.97 per share implies 12.1% downside risk.

More staple Congress Ave. businesses are leaving the block

The Brief Two more staple businesses on Congress Ave. are leaving the block The Royal Blue Grocery and The Hideout Theatre and Coffee Shop are both leaving The business owners said the building was bought from under them AUSTIN, Texas - A historic block in downtown Austin is going to look very different soon. Two staple businesses are leaving. The backstory "It should be a privilege to do business at Sixth and Congress. It's the polar opposite of that right now. It's survival, physical, mental and financial," Royal Blue Grocery Owner George Scariano said. The Royal Blue Grocery has been on East Sixth and Congress for about 15 years and The Hideout Theatre and Coffee Shop has been for more than 25 years. "We've had a lot of challenges," Scariano said. "We've seen a lot of change," The Hideout Theatre and Coffee House Owner Kareen Badr said. They are both bidding farewell to the block. "The community itself is what makes Austin so interesting and so vital, and then it's the community that keeps on getting pushed out, because you have these larger corporations, people with many more resources that have it from international global kind of stuff. But we're very hyper-local, and our entire focus is on community and art. We just want to build great art through awesome community, and that just can't compete financially with people who have different perspectives," The Hideout Theatre and Coffee House Owner Jessica Arjet said. Arjet said the building was bought from under them. "We weren't given a chance to try to buy it," Arjet said. "There's one struggle after another for the last decade of really having to hustle to make this business work in this location," Badr said. One of the owners of Royal Blue Grocery said it is what happens in this location that has contributed to them leaving. "Our landlord decided not to renew our lease, primarily because we asked her for rent relief, specifically during the pandemic, but also because of the crime that has overwhelmed this intersection," Scariano said. What's next Scariano is closing his doors on Friday night. He warns about what may be to come. "There will be hypodermic needles, there will be excrement, there will be piles of trash on this patio like there are most mornings," Scariano said. The Royal Blue Grocery had a farewell get-together with music and a big crawfish boil on Friday night. "We have all of our regulars in this neck of the woods that have been here for so long that we love. And they will not have a place to go to get their Royal Blue fix anymore. It's a very, very sad day for us," Scariano said. The Hideout is planning on moving to another location in Austin but hasn't been announced yet. "I do feel like the community that we built has been good for downtown and downtown itself has been nice to us," Arjet said. A tenant has already been found for this location. Apparently, the new tenant is going to open a bar at this location. Dig deeper So far this year, almost 30 crimes, including robbery, theft, assault, possession, and terroristic threat, have been reported just on this block. Scariano said he has watched over the years as the crime went from bad to worse. "This started a long time ago, and it's been unaddressed," Scariano said. Council Member Zo Qadri, who represents the downtown area, said he has worked with other city and county leaders to address the issues. "I think we've been very proactive as an office and as a city around crime in the downtown area." He said they have added more lights and cameras, increased the walking presence of police officers, expanded mental health services, invested in the Downtown Austin Alliance and a new homeless outreach program, and created the Downtwon Austin Safety Initiative. "We really want to make sure that downtown safety and vibrancy and the support for folks who have businesses in downtown, tenants, pedestrians, residents, visitors, that everyone truly feels safe," Councilman Qadri said. Tesla rival gets good news as robotaxi launch looms

Tesla rival gets good news as robotaxi launch looms originally appeared on TheStreet. The world of self-driving cars is quickly evolving, as a leading automaker prepares for a historic event. After months of teasing it, Tesla () is preparing to officially roll out its fleet of autonomous vehicles in Austin, Texas, and its loyal fans are watching closely. CEO Elon Musk has hinged a lot on this self-driving technology, as the company works to usher in a turnaround after months of volatility. 💵💰💰💵 Despite all the recent focus on the Tesla robotaxi debut, Musk's company isn't the only automaker that's been working hard to pull ahead in the driverless race. Waymo, a subsidiary of Google parent Alphabet, has successfully put self-driving cars on the road in multiple major cities. Now, a new report has highlighted some of the economics of the self-driving car market, providing key insights into a key area that sparked concern among some financial experts. As areas such as artificial intelligence (AI) have advanced in recent years, the rise of self-driving vehicles has seemed inevitable. Elon Musk, known for his focus on futuristic technology, has helped champion it, even though Tesla is currently still behind Waymo in the driverless that may change as Tesla's robotaxi offically enter the market. They won't be operating fully autonomously, however, as the cars will come with a teleoperator standing by to assist if necessary. As experts have told TheStreet, this means they can't be considered fully self-driving. The industry recently received some good news that suggests Waymo is in an excellent position to continue expanding. Market research Obi has published a report on the state of the industry, providing a detailed analysis of its economic elements, with a focus on Waymo, Uber () , and Lyft. The report's authors highlight Waymo's undeniable growing presence in San Francisco, a city synonymous with technology and innovation. They also reveal a shocking statistic that bodes extremely well for self-driving technology adoption, but specifically for Waymo: consumers are very willing to pay for a driverless experience. 'Waymo rides cost 41% more than Lyft and 31% more than Uber on average when comparing pricing at the same time and across the same routes,' the report states. 'Waymo also shows the highest price variability with a standard deviation of $3.65, suggesting that its pricing algorithm is more influenced by factors like ETA, consumer demand, time of day, etc.' More Self-Driving Car News:The authors add that overall, Lyft remains the least expensive rideshare option, offering a $14.44 mean average fare, while Uber's average price is $15.88 and Waymo's is $20.43. But even with that price increase, Obi's data makes it clear that an increasing number of consumers are willing to pay for a ride in a Waymo vehicle. Given the nationwide excitement surrounding the rise of self-driving cars, it likely won't surprise most people that Waymo is enjoying this type of success. But the report shows that customers aren't just willing to pay more for a car with no driver. Surprisingly, they are willing to wait longer for discussing the factor of estimated time of arrival (ETA), Obi highlighted this area, often one that plays into a consumer's decision to take a rideshare or traditional taxi cab, stating: 'ETA is the second most important factor in rideshare selection for consumers after price. Waymo, due to fewer cars, can have significantly longer ETAs, as well as higher prices in peak hours, showing that consumers who do choose to use a Waymo at these times are driven by a strong preference for autonomous vehicles.' Many people are quick to complain about the high prices of ride-share vehicles and long wait times. But if the vehicle comes without a driver, it is clear that consumers are willing to overlook these elements. The fact that Waymo's cars are rising in popularity so quickly may be reassuring for some Tesla investors, as it indicates that demand for self-driving cars isn't slowing down. But it also shows that the company's primary competitor is surging in popularity and gaining market share. Until the Tesla robotaxis start establishing a presence in multiple cities, it will be hard to assess the impact on Waymo. Other reports have shown that public trust in Tesla's self-driving technology is low, which could further compromise the company's chances of overtaking its early rival gets good news as robotaxi launch looms first appeared on TheStreet on Jun 13, 2025 This story was originally reported by TheStreet on Jun 13, 2025, where it first appeared.
