NHL's Sidney Crosby Takes Ownership Stake In Swiss Watch Firm Norqain

Forbes02-04-2025

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has taken an ownership stake in the Swiss watchmaking ... More company Norqain.
A lasting connection to a former teammate has led Sidney Crosby to an ownership stake in the Swiss watchmaking company, Norqain. On Wednesday, the company announced that Crosby has joined the independent, family-owned business as a shareholder and business partner.
'The discussions picked up last summer, quite quickly,' said Norqain founder and CEO Ben Kuffer. 'I could tell he really liked the brand and the whole 'my life, my way' actually meant something. I think the key moment for me, when I realized this is something special, is when Sid said that, post-career, he could imagine being on the board or being involved in Norqain. He wants to really be part of the business.'
Crosby's ties to Norqain run through former Swiss national team captain Mark Streit, who blazed a trail for his countrymen in 2006 when he became the first Swiss-born skater to become an NHL regular. Nearly 800 games later, at age 39, the defenseman was dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins at the 2017 trade deadline — just in time to join Crosby on a run to the Stanley Cup.

'I'm an older guy, but he took me under his wing a little bit in Pittsburgh,' Streit said. 'I went for lunch with him and dinner. We hung out a lot, and it was a incredible experience.'
When Streit returned to Switzerland following his retirement, he and countryman Roman Josi, the Nashville Predators captain and top Swiss-born NHL player in history, hatched a plan to enter one of their nation's most hallowed traditions, watchmaking.
With their friend Kuffer on board as an industry expert, Norqain was founded in 2018. Almost immediately, the hockey world was introduced to the innovative brand when participants at the 2019 NHL All-Star Game were gifted with Norqain watches.
'I've been wearing Norqain watches and following the brand since its first appearance at the All-Star Game in San Jose in 2019,' Crosby said as the partnership was announced on Wednesday. 'The brand has been growing incredibly fast around the world since then, and I'm really excited to join and support its further development while teaming up with Mark again. I am excited to work with Norqain and see what we can do together moving forward.'

At that All-Star Game, Crosby also went home with Kuffer's own watch after expressing his appreciation for the design.
'Thanks to Mark, we met with him, and we had a great talk,' Kuffer said. "Eventually, he said to me, 'Hey, I love my watch and but that's a nice one too. It's a totally different style.' It was the Freedom 60 Chrono — more of a timeless design — and I was so proud, I just gave it to him and said, 'It would be my honor if you take it.'
'He did, and he's been wearing it since. I promised him I hadn't been wearing it more than a week because we'd just launched the brand. And he said he was happy, because it's the founder's watch.'
In their playing days, Crosby and Streit shared the same agent, Pat Brisson of CAA Hockey. After Streit's retirement, the pair stayed in touch.
'He loves Switzerland and he was always passionate about watches,' Streit said. 'He was really interested in the business — what we do and and the story behind it. He's a unique player and he's an intelligent guy. He's asking about the economy, and you can talk to him about so many different things. That's why for us, it's great to have him on board.'

On the ice, Crosby has established himself as one of the greatest hockey players of all time. He has racked up an incredible list of achievements including three Stanley Cups, two Hart Trophies, two scoring titles and two playoff MVP awards. This season, at age 37, he became the first player in NHL history to record 20 seasons with at least a point per game and captained Team Canada to victory at the 4 Nations Face-Off. Internationally, he has two Olympic gold medals, scored the famous 'Golden Goal' to give Canada the win over the U.S. in Vancouver in 2010, served as captain in 2014 and at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, and is one of just 30 players in the IIHF's Triple Gold Club.
His Penguins have fallen on rough times and will miss the playoffs this spring for the third-straight year, but Crosby remains at the top of his game. And while he has made an estimated $150 million in salary in his career, he left money on the table when he agreed to a two-year extension that will take effect next season at a cap hit of $8.7 million a year. That's a nod to his jersey number, 87, his birth year, 1987, and his birth date, August 7th. It's also the same cap hit that he's carried since his fourth year in the league, 2008-09.
Crosby's signature combination of high standards and humility aligns well with Norqain's values and identity.
'We're an ambitious company,' Kuffer said. 'But I would always like to retain the core values that we've had as a startup. We're humble. We're Swiss. We're family. I think it's a perfect addition to our team.'
Watch for Sidney Crosby to be featured in Norqain activations across Canada and the United States.

Swiss deflation fuels talks of negative interest rates: Is SNB ready?

Remember negative interest rates? Back in early 2020, as the world grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic, central banks across advanced economies rushed to slash interest rates, offering cheaper borrowing to cushion the economic blow alongside unprecedented fiscal support. In many countries, rates tumbled to near or even below zero — an extraordinary policy shift reflecting the urgency of avoiding a prolonged recession. Fast forward five years, and no major economy currently operates with rates at or below zero. But Switzerland could soon change that. Switzerland could soon become the first advanced economy to re-enter the era of negative interest rates. A confluence of weakening price pressures and a subdued economic outlook has sparked growing expectations that the Swiss National Bank (SNB) will resume ultra-loose monetary policy, potentially cutting interest rates below zero in the coming months. Last week, the Swiss Federal Statistical Office reported that consumer prices fell by 0.1% in May 2025 compared to a year earlier, marking the first deflationary print since March 2021. The decline was broad-based, with notable year-on-year contractions in transport costs (-3.7%), food and non-alcoholic beverages (-0.3%), healthcare (-0.2%), and household goods and services (-2.6%). While a modest bout of deflation is not in itself alarming, it underscores the fragility of domestic demand and presents a challenge for the SNB's inflation target. The central bank defines price stability as annual inflation between 0% and 2%. "Swiss inflation could remain close to 0%, which represents the lower end of the SNB's price stability range," said Niklas Garnadt, economist at Goldman Sachs. The expert identified declining inflation expectations, falling energy prices, and potential trade frictions as downside pressures on the price outlook going forward. The SNB, which currently holds its policy rate at 0.25%, meets on 19 June, and economists are expecting another rate cut of 25 basis points. According to Goldman Sachs' base case, the SNB will lower its policy rate to -0.25% by September, in two successive cuts. Yet, there is a 40% chance, the bank noted, that policymakers may opt for more aggressive easing, with two 50 basis point cuts taking the rate back to -0.75% — the lowest in its history. Although the SNB also has foreign exchange operations at its disposal, economists expect interest rate cuts to take precedence in the near term. There are some reasons for this preference, according to Goldman Sachs. "The SNB has prior experience managing the impact of negative rates," Garnadt said. Moreover, domestic inflation is more responsive to interest rates than currency movements. And finally, Switzerland remains on the US Treasury's watchlist for currency manipulation, potentially constraining foreign-exchange intervention activity. That said, foreign exchange interventions have not been ruled out entirely. During the post-2008 low-inflation years, the SNB frequently bought foreign currency to stem franc appreciation. The SNB is again navigating familiar territory, balancing the need to support inflation against the risks of overreliance on unconventional measures. While Switzerland's economic fundamentals remain relatively strong, the renewed threat of deflation could push the central bank to breach interest-rate lower bounds again. Why Topgolf Callaway Rallied on Monday

An insider bought $2.5 million in Topgolf Callaway stock. Topgolf Callaway's shares have been cut in half over the past year, and the company will execute a spinoff of Topgolf later this year. However, this big insider buy doesn't necessarily mean you should follow into the stock. 10 stocks we like better than Topgolf Callaway Brands › Shares of Topgolf Callaway (NYSE: MODG) rocketed 11.3% higher on Monday, as of 1:16 p.m. ET. The company, which owns the Callaway golf club and ball brand, as well as Topgolf driving range restaurants, rose on a disclosure that an insider purchased a significant amount of stock on the open market last week. With the stock having been cut in half over the past year and 83% off its 2021 all-time highs, investors might have seen the insider buy as a sign the stock is bottoming. On Friday, it was disclosed that director Adebayo Ogunlesi purchased more Topgolf shares on the open market between June 4 and 5 of last week. All in all, Ogunlesi bought 383,701 shares last week, at an average price around $6.47 per share, good for about $2.5 million. The Nigerian-born Ogunlesi has had a storied career as an investment banker, then chairman and managing partner of private equity firm Global Infrastructure Partners. BlackRock bought GIP last year, and Ogunlesi also became a BlackRock board member. Ogunlesi may see the beaten-down shares as a bargain, given that the high inflation of the past couple of years, which dampened demand at Topgolf, may be ebbing. Additionally, Topgolf and Callaway are about to split the company, with management announcing it will spin off 80.1% of Topgolf in late 2025, effectively undoing the 2021 acquisition of Topgolf by Callaway. So, Ogunlesi may be bullish on the financial engineering and prospects for each company as stand-alone entities. Before diving in, investors may want to pause and look closer at the stock. Topgolf is down so much because recent results have been disappointing. So, does Ogunlesi see signs of a reversal in these trends? It should be noted that Ogunlesi has been a Callaway board member since 2010. That means he was part of the decision to buy Topgolf in the first place -- a decision that is now being unwound. Moreover, Ogunlesi last bought shares on the open market in June 2023, and shares are down 60% since that purchase. Therefore, investors should do their own due diligence on this turnaround situation, not just follow this insider into the stock. The Rangers And Ducks Are Reportedly In Advanced Discussions On A Trade Involving Chris Kreider

Brad Penner-Imagn Images A Chris Kreider trade is reportedly in the works. According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the New York Rangers and Anaheim Ducks are in advanced discussions on a deal that would send Kreider to Anaheim. Advertisement Seravalli adds that there's no deal at this moment in time, but there's interest and a framework of a potential deal. Vince Z. Mercogliano of USA Today is reporting that the framework is a prospect and a pick coming back to the Rangers with the Ducks taking Kreider's full $6.5M AAV. It was widely speculated Kreider could be traded this offseason, and now it seems like he'll be moved sooner rather than later if this deal comes to fruition. The 34-year-old forward recorded 22 goals, eight assists, and 30 points in 68 games while averaging 16:45 minutes this past season.
