Starbucks accelerates new staffing model to all North American stores

(Reuters) -Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol told Reuters on Tuesday that he would accelerate the rollout of the coffeehouse chain's new staffing and service model, aiming for all 18,000 North American stores by summer's end, rather than the initial plan for just a third of U.S. stores by year-end.
Niccol says the model is a foundational element of his turnaround strategy for the company, as he bets on an improved in-store customer experience to reclaim the sales growth that has eluded Starbucks in recent quarters.
Niccol said early tests of the model have sped up service times and grown sales, without providing specifics. 'We've learned, and now we know what we need to do, so let's scale it,' he told Reuters at the company's three-day leadership summit in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
The Green Apron model includes in-store technology to more efficiently sequence orders, as well as a dedicated barista for drive-through orders. Starbucks rolled out the service changes to 700 stores initially. During the company's April 29 quarterly earnings call, Niccol said it would be introduced in a third of U.S. stores by year-end.
Niccol took over as Starbucks CEO in September with a plan to return the chain to its coffeehouse roots, focusing on the in-store experience and away from a reliance on mobile and to-go orders, in what the company calls "Back to Starbucks.' The goal is to get baristas to get customers their orders in four minutes or less.
He did not share any financial figures about the cost of the Green Apron model's deployment, but said the company would host an investor day in 2026. The Las Vegas summit, the company's first since 2019, is hosting more than 14,000 managers and other company leaders.
Analysts and investors have wondered how long Niccol will need to turn the company around. Shares have gained 11% over the last five years, compared with an 88% rise in the broad-market S&P 500. TD Cowen recently downgraded its rating of Starbucks to "hold" from "buy", saying in part that it believed Niccol's turnaround would take longer than expected to deliver results.
Niccol said the transition will take time. Starbucks has not issued annual guidance, and Niccol told investors in an earnings call earlier this year that earnings-per-share 'shouldn't be used as a measure of our success' at this stage, instead pointing to in-store metrics like average wait times for orders. He said the transition's effect on earnings would be temporary.
On Tuesday, he emphasized his goal isn't to achieve short-term performance solely through cost reduction. As Starbucks increases investments in its labor and elsewhere, Niccol said he would be "ruthless" in cutting expenses not related to the company's turnaround. 'We have to be critical of where we're spending if it's not driving toward the Back to Starbucks strategy and growth programs.'

This is next-generation nuclear company Oklo (NYSE: OKLO), which provided details of a capital-raising effort it originally announced late Wednesday afternoon. Investors weren't all that happy with this, and on Friday, they traded the stock down to leave it with a more than 1% loss in value. After market hours Thursday, Oklo provided more information about the secondary share issue it disclosed the previous day. The issue has been priced at $60 per share, more than $4 below Thursday's closing price. The company is to float nearly 6.7 million shares of its class A common stock, so the issue is set to raise gross proceeds of slightly over $400 million. The issue's underwriting syndicate is led by Goldman Sachs and Bank of America Securities and includes Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase's J.P. Morgan, and UBS Investment Bank. The underwriters have been granted a 30-day option to collectively purchase up to 1 million additional shares at that $60 per share price. The offering should close this coming Monday, June 16. Despite recent successes, such as its receipt of a notice of intent to award (NOITA) a project on an Alaska base for the Air Force, Oklo is still at a relatively early stage as a company. As such, it continues to be hungry for capital to sustain its operations. The downside of this, of course, is the dilutive nature of share issues. This one isn't particularly so, as Oklo has more than 139 million shares currently outstanding. Still, it's surely spooking investors who worry that there are more, and larger, share issues to come. Short Report: Short interest in JetBlue receding
Welcome to this week's installment of 'The Short Interest Report' – The Fly's weekly recap of short interest trends among some of the most widely followed high-short-float stocks. Using the data from our partner which utilizes the latest information from stock lenders to estimate short interest changes for thousands of publicly traded companies, this report will screen for some of biggest changes in short interest as a percentage of free float and days-to-cover ratios while also considering the short interest data on some of the more volatile and heavier-traded names of the week. Based on the availability of data from Ortex, the report tracks the trading period that covers prior Friday through Thursday of this week, excluding holidays. As a basis of comparison for stocks discussed below, the S&P 500 index was up 1.8%, the Nasdaq Composite was up 1.9%, the Russell 2000 index was up 2.1%, the Russell 2000 Growth ETF (IWO) was up 1.6%, and the Russell 2000 Value ETF (IWN) was up 2.6% in the five-day trading session range through June 12. Confident Investing Starts Here: SHORT INTEREST GAINERS Ortex-reported short interest on United Parks & Resorts (PRKS) hit its lowest level of two months at 19.4% on Monday, though bearish interest was piqued the rest of the week, with shorts as a percentage of free float jumping two points to 21.4%. Days-to-cover on the name has also turned higher, rising 60bps to 8.1, with volumes on the name remaining steady. Heading into the company's mid-May earnings, shares had erased all of the macro-induced declines seen in early April, though United's softer than expected earnings and revenue eventually saw price action pivot lower over the past month despite sell-side commentary attributing the underperformance to factors such as the weather. Shares are now down 12% from pre-earnings levels and were off by 1.5% in the five-day period covered. Year-to-date, the stock is also down about 26%. Ortex-reported short interest on 800-Flowers (FLWS) has seen its upward slope steepen since January, and this week, bearish appetite was particularly pronounced. Shorts as a percentage of free float on the stock jumped from 57.8% to a new record high of 68.4%, topping last month's high-water mark of 67.5%, while days-to-cover on the name rose from 16.0 to 16.3. Likewise, the Ortex estimates are in step with exchange-reported data, which saw short interest on 800-Flowers hit record high above 73% as of May-end. In the five-day period covered through Thursday, the stock is up 1.4%, though year-to-date, shares have shed 38%, with the most recent decline in price reflecting the management's decision to pull guidance due to macro uncertainty. Ortex-reported short interest on Kura Sushi (KRUS) troughed in the 16%-17% range over the mid-March to late-April period but has since turned higher, with bears still questioning the recent bounce in the stock price. This week, shorts as a percentage of free float was up three percentage points to 27.8%, a seven-month high, and days to cover jumped 100bps to 7.3. Exchange-reported data also support the Ortex estimate as it has seen short increase rise from 16.3% mid-April to 26.6% by May-end. In the five-day period covered through Thursday, the stock is up 7.1% and shares have doubled from April lows, though year-to-date, Kura Sushi is still down about 11%. Following a surge during the month of March from 23% to 31%, Ortex-reported short interest on HighPeak Energy (HPK) retreated to 24% by late April. Following quieter May however, bears are biting into the name harder this week. In the five-day period covered through Thursday, shorts as a percentage of free float were up from 27.2% to roughly 30%. The stock price, meanwhile, has tracked the resurgence in optimism for the Energy sector. In the five-day period covered, HighPeak shares were up 7% and have now gained 44% from late-April lows. The stock is also up about 4% in early Friday trade, tracking the rally in oil prices. Ortex-reported short interest in JetBlue Airways (JBLU) peaked around 23% in late April, though despite shares starting to roll over after gaining 16% over the month of May, bears have turned more skittish. Shorts as a percentage of free float were down three points this week to 17.5% and days-to-cover on the name was down a decimal to 3.2. Exchange-reported data through May-end has likewise shown a drop from 20.6% to 17.3%. The stock, meanwhile, was down 2.9% in the five-day period covered and has traded off by another 4% in the opening hour of Friday session, with airlines bearing the brunt of an oil price shock following Israel's surprise strike against Iran overnight as well as more cautious sentiment following Air India Boeing crash yesterday.

White House reviews SpaceX contracts as Trump-Musk feud simmers, Reuters sources say
The White House earlier this month directed the Defense Department and NASA to gather details on billions of dollars in SpaceX contracts following the public blowout between President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, four people familiar with the order told Reuters. Sparking an ongoing review, the administration ordered the agencies to scrutinize Musk's contracts to ready possible retaliation against the businessman and his companies, these people said. As Reuters reported on Thursday, Pentagon officials are simultaneously considering whether to reduce the role that SpaceX, Musk's space and satellite company, may win in an ambitious new U.S. missile defense system. Reuters couldn't determine whether the White House intends to cancel any of the approximately $22 billion in federal contracts SpaceX now has. But the review shows the administration is following through on a threat by Trump during his spat with Musk last week to possibly terminate business and subsidies for Musk ventures. "We'll take a look at everything," the president said, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on June 6. In an email to Reuters, a White House spokesperson didn't answer questions about Musk's business, saying the "Trump administration is committed to a rigorous review process for all bids and contracts." In a separate statement, a spokesperson at NASA said the agency "will continue to work with our industry partners to ensure the president's objectives in space are met." Neither SpaceX nor officials at the Defense Department responded to requests for comment. The people familiar with the order said the contract scrutiny is intended to give the administration the ability to move fast if Trump decides to act against Musk, who until recently was a senior advisor to the president and the head of the cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. The review is "for political ammunition," one of the people said. Whether the U.S. government could legally, or practically, cancel existing contracts is unclear. But the possibility underscores concerns among governance experts that politics and personal pique could improperly influence matters affecting government coffers, national security and the public interest. "There's an irony here that Musk's contracts could be under the same type of subjective political scrutiny that he and his DOGE team have put on thousands of other contracts," said Scott Amey, a contracting expert and general counsel at the Project on Government Oversight, a watchdog group based in Washington. "Any decision shouldn't be based on the egos of two men but on the best interests of the public and national security." Musk's SpaceX in recent years has become a crucial partner of the U.S. government in much of its aerospace and defense work – launching satellites and other space cargo and potentially managing a crucial element of the "Golden Dome" missile shield planned by Trump. Although Musk in recent days has sought to walk back some of his critiques of the president – such as calling for Trump's impeachment last week and linking him to a convicted sex offender – his outbursts nonetheless highlighted the government's reliance on SpaceX. Before reversing course, Musk threatened to decommission the company's Dragon spacecraft. The spacecraft, as part of a roughly $5 billion contract with NASA, is the only U.S. vessel currently capable of carrying astronauts to and from the International Space Station. SpaceX is also building a network of hundreds of spy satellites under a classified contract with the National Reconnaissance Office, a U.S. intelligence agency. The contract was a pivotal transaction for SpaceX, deepening its ties with U.S. defense and intelligence services.
