Saints offensive assistant Kevin Petry set to coach in the Senior Bowl
The New Orleans Saints have always been a team that highly values Senior Bowl attendees, drafting them at a relatively high clip and always trying to take part in the event. This year seemingly will be no different, as they will have offensive assistant Kevin Petry coaching the wide receiver group for the American Team, which has quite a significant talent pool.
Petry has been coaching with the Saints for eight seasons now, entering his ninth, and has been with the organization for 12 years in various positions including as a video assistant early on. He will be able to get a first hand look at some of the wide receivers in this class, which is actually a position of need for the Saints this offseason to add some quality players to a group of Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, Bub Means, and a few others who will remain beyond this year.
Elic Ayomanor is one of the names to really keep an eye on from this group, as he is one of the higher rated receivers outside the group of likely first-round talents. In two seasons with Stanford he accrued 125 receptions for 1,844 receiving yards (14.8 yards per reception) and 12 touchdowns.
Overall, having a coach (or multiple) at the Senior Bowl and other events is a positive regardless of outcome, as it gives them the ability to work with the players and see how they may mesh into the system of the team they represent.

Former Houston Texans RB Cam Akers signs one-year deal with the Saints Former Houston Texans running back Cam Akers has a new home for the upcoming season. Akers, who spent half of the 2024 season as the Texans' No. 2 runner, agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints Friday afternoon. He will join the franchise as a backup to Alvin Kamara, along with returning secondary option Kendre Miller and rookie Devin Neal. A former second-round pick by the Los Angeles Rams out of Florida State, Akers' career has been plagued with injuries since 2021. Heading into the campaign, he suffered a torn Achilles tendon, but was able to return for the end of the playoffs and the Super Bowl victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. Since 2023, Akers has bounced around the league. He had two separate stints with the Minnesota Vikings and started two games last season in place of the injured Joe Mixon. Houston traded Akers back to Minnesota ahead of the trade deadline following Mixon's return. Signed to a one-year, $1.175 million deal, Akers proved he was healthy enough to make the active roster. He also ended up being a decent pass-catcher once he arrived in Minnesota. Between the two teams, Akers finshed 104 carries for 444 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught 14 passes for 68 yards and three scores. "Cam is an experienced player," Saints coach Kellen Moore said following his signing. "He's done a lot throughout this league. As you go through this, you're always trying to evaluate as many players as you possibly can. So we felt like it was a great opportunity, and we are fired up that he was wanting to come out here." The Texans open the regular season on the road against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 7 at SoFi Stadium.

Sammy Knight's 91-yard interception return is the Saints Play of the Day
We're going back to 1998's New Orleans Saints matchup with the Minnesota Vikings for Day 91 in our Saints Play of the Day countdown. This game had some wild moments -- we already highlighted Aaron Craver's controversial 100-yard kick return touchdown in this same series. But today, we're focusing on one of the best plays of Sammy Knight's career. The second-year safety fought to rally his team in the fourth quarter by intercepting Vikings quarterback Brad Johnson for the second time that afternoon. His first takeaway, from inside New Orleans' own end zone, prevented a sure Minnesota touchdown early on. This time, Knight took the ball away from deep in Saints territory and ran 91 yards to score a touchdown of his own. He initially bobbled the catch before securing it and taking off with Cris Carter in tight pursuit. The future Hall of Famer couldn't bring Knight down in the open field, though, and Knight pulled off the big play. You can see it all for yourself here. Advertisement Doug Brien kicked the tying extra point, giving the team a chance. They just couldn't seal the deal. Facing a 31-24 deficit on their final possession, the Saints offense initially picked up 13 yards on a Billy Joe Tolliver pass, then Craver ran for 7 more. But that's where their luck ran out. Tolliver's next pass fell incomplete. He gained just 2 yards on the next completion, then ran for a yard on fourth-and-short. A 9-yard completion was wiped out by a 10-yard penalty on the next play, and then Tolliver took three sacks on second, third, and fourth down, losing 30 yards. Still, the Saints never would've had a chance in this one if not for Knight. His efforts deserve to be remembered.
