Millions to take to road for busiest Easter bank holiday in years
Up to 20 million people are expected to take to the roads a day over the Easter holiday, the AA has warned.
Long queues are expected over the bank holiday weekend, with 19.8 million people anticipated to travel on Maundy Thursday (April 17) alone.
The AA said Easter weekend being three weeks later than in 2024 will 'bump up bank holiday traffic by 15 per cent'.
Combined with warmer temperatures than 2024, with forecasts predicting weekend highs of 18C or 19C across the country, this means more drivers are likely to get behind the wheel, the motor insurer said.
Tony Rich, the AA's head of road safety, said: 'The AA is predicting the busiest Easter on the roads since the pandemic, with Maundy Thursday being the single busiest day with 19.8 million people expected to be travelling.
'Easter falls later this year than it has for the previous two years, so this could be a factor in people deciding to head out.
'AA research shows that around 50 per cent of journeys will be under 50 miles, though – so the longer journey, for now at least, seems to be a thing of the past.'
A further 19.1 million motorists will be taking to the tarmac on Good Friday, he added. The traffic estimates are based on responses to a survey of 11,233 AA members.
Congestion is expected around town and city centres, retail parks and major highways such as the M6 at Birmingham and around the Blackpool area, the south and western section of the M25 between the M23 and M40, the M5 at Bristol and the A303 in Wiltshire.
AA patrol of the year, Shaun Jones, advised drivers to carry out 'simple checks' such as ensuring tyres are properly inflated, and levels of oil and coolant are correct.
He said: 'With so many people planning to travel this Easter, it is crucial to ensure your vehicle is in top condition.'
After a period of settled and warmer weather, forecasters expected a return to unsettled conditions next weekend with some rain.
National Highways has deployed traffic management system Operation Brock in Kent ahead of the Easter getaway period.
The scheme involves narrow lanes and a reduced 50mph speed limit.
It is designed to manage traffic flows on the M20 motorway in the event of delays at Channel ports, which are seeing high demand from holidaymakers.
Operation Brock is in place on a 13-mile stretch of the motorway between Junction 8 for Maidstone and Junction 9 for Ashford.
Lorries heading for the Port of Dover or Eurotunnel are being directed to follow signs to join a specific lane at Junction 8.
All other traffic for the coast crosses over to enter the contraflow on the London-bound carriageway.
Tourism authority VisitEngland said around 10.6 million British adults are planning to take a holiday in the UK over the bank holiday period.
Boost to the economy
That is expected to provide an estimated £3.9 billion boost to the economy.
A further 3.4 million people are undecided about whether to book an overnight domestic Easter trip, with the most common reasons being waiting to see what the weather will be and if they can afford it.
Patricia Yates, the chief executive of VisitEngland, said: 'Tourism businesses and destinations will be looking to the critical Easter weekend for much-needed cash flow after the lean winter months, so it's encouraging to see many of us are planning a holiday at home.
'The cost of living remains a concern, and while people are still keen to take a break, many are booking late, taking shorter breaks, and wanting to save on accommodation, activities and eating out, making it difficult for businesses to plan in advance.'
Disrupted train services
Thousands of Easter train journeys will be disrupted as Network Rail is carrying out engineering work.
The most significant impact will be at London Euston – the UK's 10th busiest railway station – which will have no services to or from destinations north of Milton Keynes on Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday. A reduced timetable is in force on Good Friday and Easter Monday.
Disruption is necessary because of work including renewals of overhead electric lines and drainage improvements.
Services on the West Coast Main Line will start and terminate at Carlisle, with replacement buses serving stations to the north.
Aviation analytics company Cirium said 11,282 flights are scheduled to depart UK airports between Good Friday and Easter Monday.
That is 6 per cent more than last year's Easter, but remains 4 per cent down from Easter 2019.
The most common international destinations for UK departures this Easter are Dublin, Amsterdam, Malaga, Alicante and Mallorca.

Celtic 'reopen talks' to sign January transfer target
The Parkhead club were linked with a move for the 21-year-old in the January transfer window, although it ultimately never came to fruition. Now, Celtic have reopened talks with Sarpsborg over the wide man, although no formal offer has been made yet, according to Sky Sports. There is also said to be interest in Orjasaeter from clubs in Germany and the Netherlands. Read more: Sky claimed in January that Celtic bid £4.6 million for the Norwegian, with his club holding out for £7 million. "I struggled to sleep," Orjasaeter previously said after his failed move to Parkhead. "I didn't know if I was going to be in Norway or not. I could have moved at any moment. I had to carry my passport with me everywhere. "When the window closed, I felt a sense of relief. I came to the conclusion that I was determined to stay in Sarpsborg and play here, because I didn't know if I was ready to leave yet. "Going abroad now is another level up. It had become more professional and everything. There were many thoughts going through my head during that period. "If I get a little more time in Sarpsborg, I think I'll mature and be ready for it eventually. "Of course, you will have a better life after your career if you have more money in your account, but you only live once. For me, it is just as important to have fun along the way. It is probably even more important "I have a lot of friends to keep me grounded. I think if I only had football, my head would explode! "I'm not much of a fan of football, but I love having it as a job. I couldn't have a better job than what I have. "But when I see that my friends are going on holiday or to ski at Easter, I get jealous. I'm not going to lie. "I hope that those clubs understand that not everyone can be the same. At the same time, I have my serious side too. And I think that kind of thing comes a little with age."

Reeves set to extend £3 bus fare cap until 2027
Instead, it will continue across England until March 2027 as the Government seeks to ease cost-of-living pressures on the public. The Government has previously said that, without the cap, fares could rise by as much as £12 for a journey between Leeds and Scarborough, or £5.50 for a ticket between Hull and York. Rachel Reeves delivers a speech as Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander (second right) and Andy Burnham (right), Mayor of Greater Manchester, look on during a visit to Mellor Bus in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, earlier in June (Peter Byrne/PA) A Treasury source said: 'We understand the cost of living is a priority for the British people. That is why we are investing in Britain's renewal to make working people better off.' But the Liberal Democrats criticised the decision not to return to the £2 cap that had been in place between January 2023 and December 2024. The increase in the cap was announced at the budget in October, with the Government arguing the lower rate was not financially sustainable, although some metro mayors decided to fund an extension of the £2 cap in their areas. Lib Dem transport spokesman Paul Kohler said: 'Household budgets are still really feeling the squeeze, so many will be really disappointed to see that the Government is moving to make the bus fare hike permanent. 'This will hit those who rely on public transport to get around to their local high street or to work and school in the pocket. People have been telling them they got this wrong, but Labour clearly isn't listening.'

It is thought the outage was caused by the tripping of a generating turbine. An estimated 50,289 users across the island have been affected by the huge blackout. Previous outages have hit the island's major cities with the biggest, Los Llanos de Aridane, left dark in recent months. Desperate restoration efforts are underway on the island with authorities scrambling to fix the issue. Authorities have instructed residents to stay calm as they work to restore power to the island. It comes after a series of blackouts have hit the island in recent months. Santa Cruze de Palma, Los Llanos de Aridane and El Paso have all experienced recent power outages. The latest of these, on May 8, left the power out for hours and affected several of the eight municipalities in La Palma. Today's outage has been the worst of the recent blackouts with power out across the whole island and tens of thousands of users affected. The Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres said: "I send all my support to the people of La Palma." He went on to promise that power would be restored as soon as possible.
