September
The surprise result of September was Liverpool's 1-0 reverse at home to Nottingham Forest which ended Arne Slot's serene start to his debut season. Earlier in the month, the Reds had swatted aside Manchester United as Casemiro endured a torrid afternoon. Arsenal won the first north London derby courtesy of Gabriel's second-half header. And Manchester City's season was rocked when Rodri suffered a ruptured ACL during a 2-2 draw with the Gunners. Elsewhere, Everton did it again, losing 3-2 to Aston Villa after being two goals ahead.
October
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was finally put out of his misery by being sacked after a 2-1 defeat at West Ham. Nottingham Forest rose to fifth in the table as Chris Wood inspired them to a 3-1 away victory over Leicester. And free-scoring Brentford beat Wolves 5-3 and Ipswich 4-3, prolonging the pair's winless starts to the campaign.
November
Manchester City's 32-game unbeaten league run came to an end at Bournemouth – and then the wheels well and truly fell off for Pep Guardiola's ageing charges with successive defeats by Brighton and Tottenham. For Spurs, the 4-0 thrashing at the Etihad was the high-watermark of an otherwise forgettable season. Off the pitch, referee David Coote was sacked after footage emerged of him taking drugs and criticising Liverpool's former manager Jürgen Klopp, while Ruben Amorim took the helm at Manchester United.
December
Liverpool beat Manchester City 2-0 to go 11 points clear of Pep Guardiola's side and nine clear of stumbling Arsenal. They then put six past injury-ravaged Tottenham. Under Ruben Amorim, Manchester United won the first derby of the season thanks to late goals from Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo, but they then suffered three straight home defeats for the first time in 45 years. Chelsea's title hopes faded with back-to-back defeats against Fulham and Ipswich, while Nottingham Forest ended the year in second place.
January
David Moyes returned to Everton after 12 years and quickly set about dragging them away from the relegation scrap. Meanwhile, Tottenham ended the month with four straight league defeats, the last of them against Leicester, who duly leapt out of the bottom three. The shock result of the month came at Anfield where Manchester United thwarted Liverpool thanks to Amad Diallo's late equaliser, as Ruben Amorim's charges delivered an uncharacteristically effective performance. Later that month United mourned one of their legends, Denis Law.
February
Chris Wood bagged a hat-trick as Nottingham Forest thumped Brighton 7-0, but defeat by Fulham and coming off at the wrong end of a 4-3 scoreline at Newcastle left the top-four race wide open. Meanwhile the last men's Merseyside derby a Goodison Park ended with fisticuffs and red cards after Everton's James Tarkowski walloped an equaliser in the 98th minute. Defeat for Arsenal at home to West Ham signalled the slow death of the Gunners' title charge, though the month also brought a crowd-pleasing 5-1 thrashing of Manchester City. At the bottom of the table, Southampton recorded their first Premier League win since November as they beat fellow strugglers Ipswich at Portman Road.
March
Liverpool had to come from behind to beat Southampton in their only league game of the month, while Arsenal slipped further off the pace with a 1-1 draw at Manchester United. Nottingham Forest beat Manchester City – handing Pep Guardiola's men their ninth loss of the season, more than they had lost in the previous two seasons combined. And Michail Antonio made an emotional return to the London Stadium after admiting he almost died in a car crash in December.
April
The Reds wrapped up their second Premier League title in front of their own fans with a thumping 5-1 win over Tottenham on a balmy day at Anfield. Earlier in the month, Trent Alexander-Arnold scored his last goal for his boyhood club, thrashing in a late strike against Leicester. Wolves made it a remarkable six wins on the spin, as their uptick in form condemned Ipswich, Leicester and Southampton to the drop.

Everton fans bade an emotional Premier League farewell to Goodison Park (although news emerged that the ground will now be used for women's games), Tottenham and Manchester United sank to extraordinary league lows before duking it out in the Europa League final, Southampton swerved the unwanted record of becoming the joint worst side in Premier League history as they picked up just their 12th point of the campaign at home to Manchester City, and the final day of the season saw Aston Villa potentially miss out on a Champions League spot after having a goal controversially disallowed at Old Trafford.

He carries the look of an NBA forward, but Hugo Ekitike isn't drawing attention from the basketball world. Instead, the French striker is subject to a mega-money transfer to one of European soccer's big heads after a bright few months with German club Eintracht Frankfurt. According to multiple reports, Premier League team Chelsea is considering an overture for the 22-year-old. And, as of Wednesday, German outlet Sky Sport includes newly-crowned English champion Liverpool in the running (German), with a €100 million ($113 million) price tag doing the rounds. In the league campaign recently finished, Ekitike averaged just under one goal per league appearance for third-place Frankfurt, scoring 15 in 33. He perhaps should have notched another seven or eight; WhoScored says he underperformed his expected goals by 7.55. All the same, they are decent numbers and show a player often involved in scoring situations. The appeal is clear. Ekitike is young, has an enviable physical presence at 6 foot 3, and attributes to give him a lofty ceiling in the game. However, for a talent so raw, as they say, he must get the right coaching at the right club at the right time. At present, he could struggle to work the same extra yard of space or pace at the highest level in England, where such margins prove the difference between setting the world alight or not. As is the case for many players, opinions on Ekitike will vary. Before linking up with Ekitike at Frankfurt, World Cup champ Mario Götze said, 'I think he has abilities that not many players have, with his dribbling, his speed, and his finishing—so he can certainly help us a lot.' It was an accurate forecast, as the number 11 became a dynamic cog in the front line. He's also taken criticism. 'Honestly, I've seen him playing… He was a little bit too young to play for a huge club like Paris Saint-Germain,' said ex-France star Emmanuel Petit after an interview relayed by FourFourTwo and others last month. 'Now he's having a good time in Germany with Eintracht Frankfurt. (But) I think it's probably too soon for him to come to a top top club like Arsenal or Liverpool.' Spending around €100 million ($113 million) on Ekitike would be a serious commitment from Chelsea, Liverpool, or whoever snaps up the goal-getter should he leave 2022's Europa League winner. Both mentioned sides can upgrade with a reliable striker; regular spender Chelsea needs to ensure no wasted money amid profit and sustainability rules, while Liverpool knows its last significant center-forward investment, Darwin Núñez, didn't return the rewards it sought. If either hits the jackpot, it will have a marketable talent to help bring the riches of Champions League soccer season after season. The fact anyone will probably have to stump up a nine-figure sum to land Ekitike shows how blown up the market is today. There are only so many top-billing center-forwards, and that's the going rate, even for a forward who's only enjoyed two noteworthy seasons—at Reims and Frankfurt—in Europe's major leagues. Is a significant outlay naïve, or is Ekitike an ace in the pack over the coming years? To find the answer, an admirer needs to get the checkbook out.

There is a bizarre report coming out of England, which implies that someone at Bayern Munich killed the club's hopes for signing Florian Wirtz. Previously, reports indicated that Bayern Munich has an inconsistent plan for Wirtz with the executives communicating one thing and Kompany stating another. There were also reports that Liverpool FC's Arne Slot simply had a better vision and sales pitch for Wirtz. Advertisement This report from Express, however, paints a slightly different picture — one where someone (presumably head coach Vincent Kompany) — might have told Wirtz that he would not start centrally in the attack: Florian Wirtz has reportedly chosen to join Liverpool over Bayern Munich due to concerns about playing time, in addition to other factors. The forward is widely expected to sign for the Merseyside giants over the coming weeks after being earmarked as a top target by Arne Slot. If the move goes ahead, he will become one of the most expensive players in Premier League history. The player is thought to be hell-bent on joining the Reds and went house-hunting in the Merseyside area last week. One of the key factors behind his decision is the possibility of starting more games at Liverpool, according to Bild. It is said that Wirtz did not receive assurances from Bayern Munich, with the question of his role within the team 'not finally resolved'. The club were reportedly planning to start Jamal Musiala, who recently signed a long-term contract extension, ahead of him. This led to Wirtz facing a straight choice between Liverpool and Manchester City. The report adds that during initial talks, both clubs guaranteed the player 'a central role in attack' before he eventually settled on joining the Reds. Given the timing of things, it is now clear that Wirtz had already moved on from Bayern Munich in advance of his jaunt to England and definitely before all of the news dropped last Friday. Now, the focus must turn to why Wirtz was not going to get the opportunity to play centrally in the attack. Did Kompany tell Wirtz he would have to play wing? Does the club have an agreement with Jamal Musiala that would preclude them from the club pushing him out to wing (maybe a better position for him)? Most importantly, how did the club get this far along with Wirtz, only to not have a plan for how to address this potential issue? From previous reports, we can ascertain that talks with Bayern Munich's executives might have had a different idea for how Wirtz would fit as opposed to Kompany. Advertisement The failure to land Wirtz is a black mark on the club and shows a distinct lack of alignment if this report is true. Internally, the organization should be trying to discern how it fell apart, why it fell apart, and take action to ensure it does not happen again. From the outside looking in, it does not appear as if the executives pulling the strings and the coaching staff on the ground working with players were in agreement for an acquisition of Wirtz might look like — and that ultimately killed the deal. Here are some takeaways from the first OTA practice open to the media: Two expected and two unexpected absentees Four Packers were not in attendance Wednesday: Jaire Alexander, Tyron Herring, Elgton Jenkins and John Williams. There were more indications this week that Alexander and the Packers could be close to reconciliation, as The Athletic's Matt Schneidman reported the team has offered the All-Pro corner a restructured deal, and that Alexander wants to return to Green Bay this year. Xavier McKinney, who has become a good friend of Alexander's, said 'we would all like him back' when speaking to the media Wednesday, Injury updates The list of those not practicing due to injury was: Warren Brinson, John FitzPatrick, Jadon Janke, MarShawn Lloyd, Jeremiah Martin, Collin Oliver, Nesta Jade Silvera, Quay Walker and Christian Watson. Savion Williams practiced in a red "non-contact" jersey. Jayden Reed provided some background on the injury he suffered in the Wild Card loss to Philadelphia, and it sounds like the issue was quite serious. Reed told the media the shoulder injury was a dislocation and a partially torn labrum, and while he did not have surgery, based on the recovery timetable of four to five months he laid out, with the injury happening in January, it would seem he has only recently fully recovered. Search for 'best five' offensive linemen is underway As has become the standard in Green Bay, there was plenty of rotation along the offensive line on Wednesday, as young players in particular continue to cross-train at various positions. From what LaFleur said post-practice, it sounded like Rhyan filled in at center so the team could split the field in half and essentially run two practices at once. Given LaFleur brought this up unprompted, it would seem this was more a logistical situation than a case of Rhyan truly "competing" at center. Jordan Morgan practiced at left tackle with the second-team offense behind Rasheed Walker, as had been expected, with the team being fairly open about moving him out to his natural left tackle position. Advertisement But he also took some snaps at right guard with the ones, which was again likely due to Jenkins' absence on the interior. Meanwhile, rookie second-round pick Anthony Belton split time between left tackle with twos, and right tackle with the twos and threes. Defensive backfield rotations While it has been tempting to spend the offseason wondering how each player fits into a specific role in Green Bay's defensive backfield, the truth is that it will likely be a fluid situation with plenty of rotation week to week, or even drive to drive. The tone was set in that regard at the first OTA practice, with the Packers staying true to their word that new signing Nate Hobbs would line up both inside and outside. Evan Williams and Javon Bullard rotated with the ones at safety opposite McKinney.
