Alachua County families invited to schools April 16 for annual Kindergarten Round-up

Yahoo01-04-2025

Incoming kindergarten families are invited to bring their children to the annual Alachua County Public Schools Kindergarten Round-Up to become familiar with the school they'll be attending in the fall.
All elementary schools that serve kindergarten students will open their doors April 16 at 2:15 p.m. Children and their parents/guardians will have a chance to talk to teachers and staff, tour the campus and learn more about their school.
The first day for students in the 2025-26 school year will be Aug. 11 for students at most schools. A 2025-26 calendar for Rawlings Center for the Fine Arts is still under development. The school is on a year-round academic calendar.

Under Florida law, children must be five years old on or before September 1 to enroll in kindergarten.
Parents can begin the online registration process on April 8 for their incoming kindergarten students and any student who will be new to the district by going to sbac.edu/enrollment. Before school starts, and preferably well in advance, they also will need to provide to their child's zoned school several required documents, including a birth certificate, proof of a physical exam performed sometime within the last year, immunization records, and two proofs of residence in the parent's name. Examples of a proof of residence include a lease agreement, a property tax statement, a utility bill or other documents.
Schools are open during the summer months to help families with enrollment.
Families who aren't sure what school their child will be attending can visit sbac.edu/enrollment or call the district's Office of Student Assignment at 352-955-7700.

Comer demands interviews with former top Biden aides as part of probe into mental acuity

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) is expanding his probe into former President Biden's mental acuity by demanding interviews with some of his former top aides. Comer on Wednesday sent letters to former chief-of-staff Ron Klain, senior adviser Anita Dunn, former counselor Steve Ricchetti, and aides Michael Donilon and Bruce Reed. 'The scope of your responsibilities — both official and otherwise — and personal interactions within the Oval Office cannot go without investigation. If White House staff carried out a strategy lasting months or even years to hide the chief executive's condition — or to perform his duties — Congress may need to consider a legislative response,' Comer wrote in a letter to Klain. While the letters demand a transcribed interview, they also ask the recipients if they 'will require a subpoena to compel your attendance.' The Hill reached out to Klain and a representative for Dunn for comment but was not immediately able to reach the other aides for comment. Comer during the last Congress requested interviews with three other White House aides, as well as Biden's physician. New books, including 'Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again,' have reignited debate about Biden's mental acuity while in office and whether he experienced cognitive decline. Since President Trump took office, the GOP has taken a number of steps focusing on Biden. The White House confirmed Tuesday that pardon attorney Ed Martin would be reviewing Biden's pardons for his family members, as well as some other clemencies granted during his final days in office. And the Justice Department last month released the full tapes of Biden's interview with special counsel Robert Hur, one in which the attorney said Biden appeared to have memory lapses. While president, Biden released the full transcript of the conversation. Biden, through a spokesperson, has rejected claims he did not have the mental acuity to manage the presidency. 'We continue to await anything that shows where Joe Biden had to make a presidential decision or where national security was threatened or where he was unable to do his job,' a spokesperson said in response to the book release. Former Giants QB Sounds Off on Jaxson Dart Narrative

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Only time will tell if the New York Giants selected their true franchise quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft with Jaxson Dart. Heading into the 2025 NFL season, it seems the Giants might keep the young rookie on ice, as two veterans ahead of him on the depth chart have more than enough experience to warrant playing over him right away. Russell Wilson joined the Giants after spending a season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Then there's Jameis Winston, who just wrapped up a 12-game stretch with the Cleveland Browns last year. The presence of the two quarterbacks can be positive for Dart, if the Giants view Wilson and Winston as two valuable veteran leaders for their 22-year-old passer. However, a quarterback competition won't allow for Dart to get immediate reps as a rookie. In fact, he could be in line for a redshirt year, despite being the 25th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Former Giants quarterback Phil Simms believes that would be a mistake. Sit out the whole season? "That is the most overused stupid thing that I see people say on TV," Simms said on the 'Up & Adams Show' this week. "The ideal situation to me .. they get off to a decent start, we see the whole team is better than it was last year. The defensive line. I think the last two drafts have been very good. All that. We're respectable. But then there comes a point six, seven, eight weeks into the season unless you see that there's an opportunity to really be great we've got to find a spot to put Jaxson Dart in there, give him some experience, let him have some success and some failures because that's how you grow in the NFL as a quarterback." There's only so much a young quarterback can do with his eyes and ears from an NFL sideline. Mental reps and snaps are two totally different worlds. Take it from a two-time champion and multi-time pro bowler. Since the Giants aren't viewed as a potential Super Bowl contender in 2025, they aren't likely to be one veteran quarterback away from breaking into that contention. As a team, they'll see growing pains. Why not allow for Dart to experience some of his own as the season plays out? Jaxson Dart #6 of the New York Giants during rookie minicamp at NY Giants Quest Diagnostics Training Center on May 09, 2025 in East Rutherford, New last time the Giants drafted high on a quarterback was when they took Daniel Jones out of Duke. There was no redshirt for Jones at the time, who went under center for 13 games in 2019. It was a tough stretch, as the Giants went 3-9. However, they felt good about Jones, who threw for over 3,000 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Long-term, it didn't work out, which places the Giants in a situation to hope that Dart is the answer. Opinions about what the Giants should do with the rookie will be all over the place. In Simms' eyes, it's a no-brainer. Let the kid play next season.

Phil Mickelson knows 'high likelihood' Oakmont will be final U.S. Open appearance

GAINESVILLE, Va. — After he shocked the golf world four years ago by winning the PGA Championship at age 50, Phil Mickelson had a moment of honest self-assessment. 'It's very possible that this is the last tournament I ever win. Like if I'm being realistic,' Mickelson said on that triumphant Sunday at Kiawah Island. Mickelson hasn't won since, and while he wasn't eager to reflect Wednesday on a career that includes six major titles and just as many famous near-misses, he indicated his competitive future is limited. He said he wants to help his teammates on LIV's HyFlyers squad and would step away if he's no longer doing that. 'I'm also going to be 55 in a couple weeks, so I want to be realistic there, too. I want this team to succeed. I don't want to hold it back,' Mickelson said. 'If I'm holding it back, then it's time for me to move on and get somebody else in here.' Mickelson also acknowledged the possibility that Oakmont will be his last U.S. Open. He has a record six runner-up finishes at the national championship, the only major he hasn't won. 'There's a high likelihood that it will be,' Mickelson said, 'but I haven't really thought about it too much.' The USGA gave Mickelson a special exemption to the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, which he ultimately didn't need because he won at Kiawah a month earlier. Nonetheless, the U.S. Open historically does not grant more than one special exemption to any player, and Mickelson has missed the past three U.S. Open cuts. He remains exempt for the other three majors as a past champion.
