Judgment to be handed down in murders of 2 Boksburg North cops
Judgment is expected to be handed down tomorrow in the Johannesburg High Court to two men accused of the October 2022 murders of Boksburg North police officers Sergeant Vusi Batsha (45) and Constable Kgotso Malahlela (24).
Boksburg Advertiser reports that the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) secured a guilty verdict against Hlulani Mabuza (32) and Sihle Ntuli (29) in the Johannesburg High Court on April 9.
They are facing two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Batsha and Malahlela were ambushed while attending an inquest on the corner of Field and Main Reef Road, Lilianton, just before 22:00 on October 21, 2022.
The suspects demanded their service firearms, leading to a fatal struggle. Batsha was shot dead at the scene. Malahlela, while seeking cover, was fatally shot moments later. Both service firearms were stolen.
Breakthrough
According to Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd Ramovha, swift action and intelligence gathering led to a breakthrough on April 22, 2023.
'DPCI SOCI, in collaboration with Gauteng Special Law Enforcement officials, arrested Mabuza and two accomplices at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.
'Though their initial court appearance for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition on the roll, the SOCI team's prompt re-arrest ensured their detention,' said Ramovha.
He added that the police apprehended Ntuli on May 24, 2023, at Harrismith Correctional Services in the Free State following detailed investigations.
His interrogation yielded critical information linking him to the crime scene.
'Through exhaustive efforts, investigators built an unassailable case that culminated in justice for the fallen officers,' the spokesperson added.
Justice
Acting provincial head of the Hawks in Gauteng, Brigadier Phumeza Klaas, lauded the SOCI team's relentless commitment to justice.
She also thanked the metro police department and Gauteng Traffic for their invaluable support during the arrests.
'This verdict brings solace to the families of Sergeant Batsha and Constable Malahlela and reaffirms our unwavering dedication to dismantling organised crime and safeguarding our communities,' Klaas said.

Roodepoort family pleads for justice after brutal attack
A peaceful morning turned into a horrific scene when Quinten van Niekerk's life was almost taken in the early hours of May 21. Roodepoort Record reports that he was brutally attacked by a wanted suspect who is on the run for attempted murder and several other charges. This comes after his sister Geneké van Niekerk shared a post on her Facebook page about the attack, highlighting that the suspect in question is on the run. According to Geneké, Quinten's life was threatened twice in just over a month, both times by the same suspect. 'Since Quinten was busy with renovations, the suspect saw an opportunity to gain access to his house and attack him. We are still unable to determine how he managed to enter the estate when the CCTV footage only provides evidence of him leaving the premises. When Quinten saw him, he shouted and yelled for help, which woke up his partner, only for her to find the suspect on top of Quinten with a knife. 'His partner ran to him and tried to protect him by lying on top of him with her back faced to the suspect, but unfortunately, got caught in the chaos and was stabbed in the chest by the suspect after a brutal tussle between all three of them. 'The suspect tried to flee the scene but hid behind their home in an attempt to attack Quinten again. While feeling slightly dizzy from his stab wound, Quinten took the belt from the bathrobe and wrapped it around his wound to stop the bleeding and check if the suspect was gone,' Geneké explains. The suspect stole Quinten's vehicle and fled the scene, driving through the estate's security gates to escape. The stolen vehicle was later found abandoned near a shopping complex on Hendrik Potgieter Road. Geneké added that they opened a case at the Honeydew Police Station for the second time. 'On April 13, the suspect broke into Quinten's home and stabbed him in the foot, causing significant damage to his property while his children were in his home, further heightening the horror of the situation. In the wake of the second attack, it was revealed to us that the suspect's friends were allegedly sharing messages on WhatsApp, expressing hope that Quinten had died from his injuries while he was still recovering at Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital. 'Quinten's children are still traumatised, watching these two situations unfold and feeling helpless, pleading with the suspect to leave their father alone. 'We just want justice for my brother and for him and his family to be safe and not have to constantly look over their shoulders,' Geneké adds. Geneké confirmed that the police assured her that an investigation is still ongoing. Questions have been sent to the police for comment, and no response has been forthcoming. Suspected cop killer arrested in Bushbuckridge
A suspect linked to the murder of Constable Khulani Chabangu on May 30 has been arrested. The 25-year-old suspect was caught while loitering in the streets of Mkhuhlu in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, yesterday at around 16:30. Mpumalanga News reports that a team of investigators comprising the Hawks, National Crime Intelligence and the Calcutta Police Task Team effected the arrest. 'The suspect was found in possession of two cellphones. It is believed that one of the phones was stolen during the robbery and murder of the policeman,' says Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Magonseni Nkosi. Further police investigations led the team to the house of a person of interest linked to the suspect. 'Upon seeing the police, the suspect fled into the residential area, managing to evade arrest,' says Nkosi. 'A search of the house was conducted during which a handgun with the serial numbers filed off and four live ammunition rounds were seized,' he adds. Chabangu (29), who was attached to Volksrust SAPS, was gunned down during a business robbery at a barbershop in Lillydale Trust under the Bushbuckridge municipality. The robbers entered the premises and demanded valuables from the victims, including cellphones and cash. They allegedly assaulted the victims and stripped the policeman of his clothes before taking his vehicle keys. As they left the barbershop, Chabangu pursued the robbers. They shot him in the upper body, killing him instantly. The Mpumalanga head of the Hawks, Major General Nico Gerber, vowed that the police would not rest until all involved in the killing of the officer were behind bars. 'We strongly believe that justice will be served for the family, community and the SAPS,' says Gerber. Chabangu's funeral takes place today in Bushbuckridge.
