Los Angeles imposes curfew over protests

NHK2 days ago

Authorities in Los Angeles have responded to days of protests over President Donald Trump's crackdown on immigration by imposing a curfew. It started Tuesday night and lasted until early the next morning. However, it did not stop people from taking to the streets. The LA Police Department announced that more than 200 people have been arrested for failing to disperse and for violating the curfew.
Mayor Karen Bass said on Wednesday the curfew will stay in place as long as immigration raids continue. She criticized Trump for sending in National Guard troops without first consulting the state, saying, "I posit that maybe we are part of a national experiment to determine how far the federal government can go in reaching in and taking over power from a governor."
California Governor Gavin Newsom echoed those remarks on X and denounced the president for diverting members of the National Guard from fighting wildfires.
The White House is refusing to back down. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, "The Trump administration is going to continue the mass deportation effort that the president promised the American public."

LA on high alert as mass protests against Trump expected on Saturday

Police in Los Angeles are on high alert as demonstrations against US President Donald Trump are expected to attract large crowds on Saturday. The LA rallies are part of the "No Kings" protests that are planned in more than 2,000 locations across the United States. Organizers say the demonstrations are to protest a military parade in Washington, also on Saturday, marking the 250th anniversary of the US Army, which coincides with Trump's 79th birthday. The head of the LA Police Department said activity on social media promoting the No Kings events has been high, and that they are expecting crowds that may be "unprecedented." Demonstrations have been taking place in Los Angeles since June 6 when federal officials began to carry out raids searching for undocumented immigrants. On Friday, protestors staged peaceful rallies in downtown LA. Trump has deployed 200 US Marines to protect a federal building in the city.

Trump to hold military parade in Washington DC

The administration of US President Donald Trump will hold a large-scale military parade in Washington DC on Saturday to mark the US Army's 250th anniversary. The parade, which coincides with Trump's 79th birthday, has invited calls for counter rallies in more than 2,000 locations across the United States. The parade will start at 6:30 p.m. and proceed on a 1.4-kilometer route from near the Lincoln Memorial to the south side of the White House. US flags and banners celebrating the army's 250th anniversary are being displayed along the route. Fences have been erected in some parts around the parade course. About 6,700 soldiers in uniform and about 150 military vehicles, including the US Army's main Abrams tanks, will appear in the parade. US media say this will be the first military parade to be held in Washington since President George H. W. Bush staged one after the Gulf War in 1991. The US Army estimates the parade will cost up to 4.5 million dollars, inviting criticism from those who are calling it a misuse of military resources and politicizing of the armed forces. While protests persist in Los Angeles against raids in search of undocumented immigrants by the Trump administration, protests entitled "No Kings" that are being called in more than 2,000 places across the United States, are raising concerns about possible turmoil.

Trump reports tens of millions in income from crypto ventures

U.S. President Donald Trump filed his first public financial disclosure report of his term on Friday, providing what he said was the latest information about his holdings, including income from his family's foray into cryptocurrencies. Trump, who returned to office in January, reported $57.35 million from token sales at crypto firm World Liberty Financial. He also reported holding 15.75 billion governance tokens in the venture. The financial disclosure was signed as of June 13 and did not state the time period it covered. The details of the cryptocurrency listings, as well as other information in the disclosure, suggest it was through the end of December 2024, which would exclude most of the money raised by the family's cryptocurrency ventures. The wealth of the Republican businessman-turned-politician ranges from crypto to real estate, and a large part on paper is tied up in his stake in Trump Media & Technology Group, owner of social media platform Truth Social. The disclosure showed income from various assets including Trump's properties in Florida. Trump's three golf-focused resorts in the state — Jupiter, Doral and West Palm Beach — plus his nearby private members' club at Mar-a-Lago, generated at least $217.7 million in income, according to the filing. The disclosure also listed income of $5 million in license fees from a development in Vietnam. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
