Michael Higgins: Garneau's moral compass always pointed true north

It is a measure of the man that in a world where values, virtue, and self-sacrifice seem anachronistic, Marc Garneau embodied them. Article content Article content As an astronaut, Garneau reached the stars, as a politician he served honourably and faithfully, despite his tawdry treatment at the hands of Justin Trudeau. Article content In a statement, Prime Minister Mark Carney said, 'To those who worked alongside him, Marc was a trusted colleague and friend. To Canadians, he was a symbol of national pride and possibility.' Article content Article content Mary Simon, the Governor General, said he left behind a legacy of integrity and professionalism. Article content He was president of the Canadian Space Agency from 2001 to 2005 and in 2008 was elected as a Liberal MP for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce–Westmount (formerly Westmount–Ville-Marie). Article content Article content In 2013, he ran for the Liberal leadership against Trudeau, and in a debate that year, pointedly asked the future prime minister, 'So please tell us what in your resume qualifies you to be the leader of the country.' Article content Article content 'I was never sure after that whether he held that against me,' Garneau told the CBC's Rosemary Barton last year. 'But on balance, I think he didn't because he appointed me transport minister when we were finally elected.' Article content Garneau became transport minister in 2015 with one of his first acts being to introduce a passenger bill of rights for fliers. From January to October of 2021, he was foreign minister until suddenly being dropped without explanation by Trudeau and replaced by the more sycophantic Mélanie Joly.

Seeding nearing completion across Sask.: crop report

Seeding across Saskatchewan is now 97 per cent complete, according to the latest provincial crop report. The southwest, west-central, and northeast parts of the province are 99 per cent complete, the northwest is 98 per cent complete, while the southeast and east-central regions are 95 per cent complete. Overall, seeding for field peas, spring wheat, durum, barley, triticale, canola, lentils, mustard, flax and oats is complete or nearly complete, while seeding progress for chickpeas, canary seed, soybeans, and perennial forage are the furthest behind. During the reporting period from May 27 to June 2, producers in the province saw minimal rain, with the highest rainfall reported in the Eldon area at 11 millimetres. The Meadow Lake area received eight millimetres, but most areas did not report any rainfall, the province said. While topsoil moisture continued to decline during the reporting period, producers across the province reported mostly good crop emergence with some reports of spotty emergence in later seeded crops, the report said. Of the crops that have emerged, most have been reported in good to fair condition, with minor crop damage reported overall due to dry conditions, wind, and heat. Some producers also reported some minor crop damage from flea beetle, cutworm, grasshopper, and wireworm pressure, as well as wildlife. Producers are now busy with seeding and spraying, rock picking, land rolling, and moving cattle out to pasture, the province said. For the full crop report, click here.

A new set of stamps from Canada Post paying tribute to the lives and legacies of Indigenous leaders will include one featuring Bruce Starlight. The Tsuut'ina Nation Elder will be featured on his own stamp along with Julia Haogak Ogina and Sophie McDougall as a tribute to the trio's efforts to the preservation of the culture and languages of First Nations, Inuit and Metis communities. Starlight is an Elder and Knowledge Keeper who was born on the Tsuut'ina Nation. He was a language commissioner for his community and one of the founders of Tsuut'ina Gunaha Nas?agha, an organization devoted to preserving the language of the Tsuut'ina Nation people. Ogina has worked to promote and protect Inuit culture and traditions, while McDougall, who died in 2023 at the age of 95, worked to preserve Metis culture and language. In 2023, she received the Order of Gabriel Dumont Gold Medal in recognition of a lifetime of service to the Metis of Canada. Originally launched in 2022, the stamp series highlights the achievements of Indigenous leaders across the country. All three will be released on June 20, the day before National Indigenous Peoples Day.
