SDRF rescues man stranded in swollen Tawi river in Jammu after overnight rainfall; IMD issues heavy rain alert
NEW DELHI: The State Disaster Response Force rescued a person stranded in Jammu's River Tawi on Wednesday following heavy overnight rainfall that raised water levels.
This emergency operation occurred as various regions across India face intense weather conditions, with the IMD issuing alerts for heavy rainfall in multiple areas and a heatwave warning for the Jammu division.
SDRF personnel descended via stairs to reach the accident spot and successfully rescued the man from the Tawi river. The incident coincided with the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway at Chanderkote due to a landslide at Mehar and T2 Tunnel Marg.

The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted increased rainfall activity across Northwest India from June 25. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue over several parts of Central, East, and Northeast India for the next seven days.
IMD Scientist Bikram Singh provided insights about the monsoon conditions in Uttarakhand. "The monsoon was declared in Uttarakhand on June 20. Continuous rain is occurring. Heavy rain has not been observed much.
In the last 24 hours, light to moderate rain has occurred in many places. Some areas have also experienced heavy rain. There is a possibility of heavy rain today in Bageshwar, Nainital, and Dehradun as well."

Nine men trapped in swollen Tawi river rescued in Jammu
Nine men were rescued Wednesday (June 25, 2025) in a joint operation by police and SDRF teams after they were trapped in the Tawi river following a sudden rise in the water level due to rains that lashed many parts of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. Heavy rains also disrupted traffic along Jammu-Srinagar national highway for over three hours this morning, while a couple of vehicles were also washed away due to overflowing of a stream in Rajouri district, the officials said. Madan Lal (52), a labourer, had gone for sand extraction in the Tawi around 8.45 am but got trapped due to sudden rise in the water level near Jewel chowk bridge in the city. He was rescued by State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel who dropped a ladder from the bridge and managed to pull him out after remaining trapped for around two hours, the officials said. Eight more people, including some who had gone for 'Pind Daan', were rescued in a joint operation by police, traffic cops, SDRF and local volunteers, the officials said. Several trapped horses were also rescued during the operation, the officials said. A traffic department spokesman said mudslides triggered by heavy rains blocked Jammu-Srinagar national highway at Mehad and T2 tunnel in Ramban area around 6.30 a.m., forcing suspension of traffic from both sides. However, the traffic resumed after the concerned road clearance agencies removed the debris within three hours, he said. The officials said an overflowing stream caused a flood-like situation in Kheora, Lower Jawahar Nagar and Thudi in Rajouri town, while a couple of vehicles parked on the banks of the stream also got washed away. According to the meteorological department, Katra town of Reasi district recorded the highest 108.5 mm of rainfall, followed by Rajouri (80 mm), Udhampur district (71.4 mm), Poonch (48 mm) and Ramban (47.5 mm) during the past 24 hours. The weather office has predicted intermittent spells of light to moderate rain and thundershowers at many places with possibility of heavy rain at a few places of Jammu division till June 27.

Monsoon rainfall 4% above normal as of June 24, Kharif sowing progressing well
New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): As of June 24, India's cumulative monsoon rainfall stands at 4.0 per cent above the Long Period Average (LPA), indicating a positive start to the season. According to ICICI Bank research, this marginal surplus in rainfall is expected to benefit Kharif crop production in states that have received sufficient rainfall. The report attributed the data to CEIC and IMD and mentioned that Rajasthan (135 per cent above LPA) and Gujarat (134 per cent above LPA) have received the highest excess rainfall among the major Kharif states. Other key Kharif crop producing states such as Madhya Pradesh (28 per cent above LPA), Uttar Pradesh (19 per cent), Tamil Nadu (15 per cent), Karnataka (10 per cent), Haryana (11 per cent), and West Bengal (7 per cent) have also recorded rainfall above the seasonal average. Punjab has received rainfall equal to the LPA. This widespread and timely rainfall is expected to positively impact sowing and crop growth, improving overall agricultural output. However, not all regions have fared equally well. States like Telangana (43 per cent below LPA), Chhattisgarh (36 per cent below LPA), Andhra Pradesh (34 per cent below LPA), and Bihar (20 per cent below LPA) are facing rainfall deficits. If the shortfall continues, it may affect kharif sowing and crop yields in these regions. The monsoon, which began on a weaker note, improved significantly in the second half of June. Cumulative rainfall now stands at 104 per cent of the long-period average (LPA), which is slightly below the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) forecast of 108 per cent for June. However, the rainfall distribution remains uneven across the country. Even though rainfall in some major kharif-producing states is below LPA, Kharif sowing so far is up 10.4 per cent (YoY). Out of the normal sowing of 109.7mn ha, 13.8mn ha of sowing has already been completed (12.5mn ha last year) The growth in sowing has been largely driven by key crops such as rice, which has seen a 57.9 per cent YoY increase, pulses (up 42.4 per cent), and coarse cereals (up 22.1 per cent). However, the sowing of oilseeds and jute & mesta has declined by 2 per cent and 2.8 per cent YoY respectively. With monsoon activity still progressing, further developments in rainfall distribution over the coming weeks will be critical to determine the full impact on agriculture across the country. (ANI)
