It's official: this is Europe's best airline in 2025

Time Out3 days ago

The World Airline Awards produce a list of – you guessed it – the world's best airlines. But what would be even more useful is a roundup of all the absolute finest operators with services near you, right?
Well, handily, Skytrax's annual customer satisfaction survey gains insight from travellers from more than 100 different countries, enabling it to produce regional top 10 lists, too. So, frequent flyers in Europe – listen up.
In the newly-released 2025 edition of the awards, Turkish Airlines has claimed the crown as the best operator in Europe. Unsurprisingly, it also won first place for the best airline in southern Europe, and the accolade for the world's best business class onboard catering. Good stuff, eh?
But, if you're flying with Turkish Airlines soon, there's a new rule you should be aware of. Time Out reported back in May that Türkiye will soon issue fines for those who stand up after a flight has landed but before the seatbelt sign has been switched off, and Turkish Airlines, the country's national carrier, will be the first to implement this rule. You can read more about it here.
Air France claimed second place, and Swiss International Airlines claimed third. Read on to find out if your go-to operator made this prestigious top 10.

Turkey hoping to hold 5G tender in August, minister says

ISTANBUL, June 22 (Reuters) - Turkey's transport and infrastructure minister said the country was hoping to hold a tender for 5G network services in August, adding that the mobile communication service was expected to start next year. "I think we will hold this tender in August if there are no issues," Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu told reporters in Istanbul during a briefing. "Instead of covering the entire country in the first stage, I think we will cover the densely populated provinces (first) and roll out this process gradually within the framework of the programme, this was the case in 4.5G as well," he added. Asked about the impact on aviation of the Iran-Israel conflict, Uraloglu said Turkish airline companies had seven civilian aircraft stranded in Iran currently and four others in Iraq due to the closure of airspace in the region. "We are following this up through our foreign ministry and MIT (intelligence agency). Given that air traffic is very intense in this region, neither us nor the relevant countries could take that risk," Uraloglu said. "At the first opportunity we will bring them back," he added, referring to the planes, which he said belonged to Turkish Airlines ( opens new tab, its subsidiary AJet, Pegasus Airlines ( opens new tab and Tailwind Airlines.

Exclusive: Turkish Airlines explores Air Europa stake as bid deadline looms

LONDON, June 20 (Reuters) - Turkish Airlines is exploring making a bid for a minority stake in Air Europa, the latest carrier to express interest in the Spanish airline, according to two sources with knowledge of the deal, with binding bids due in the coming weeks. Interested investors have been asked to submit binding bids by early July, one of the sources and two more said. The sources declined to be identified because the terms are confidential. Turkish Airlines' consideration of a bid is significant as there are few examples of carriers outside Europe buying shares in players in the region. The interest has been reported by Spanish online newspaper El Espanol. The deadline for binding bids has not previously been reported. Air France KLM ( opens new tab and Lufthansa ( opens new tab are also in talks with Globalia, the holding company of the family Hidalgo that founded the company, about buying a stake, Reuters reported previously. The airline makes just over a quarter of its revenues from Europe. It has a codeshare agreement with Air Europa. Turkish Airlines ( opens new tab did not immediately respond to requests for comment, while its shareholder Turkey's Wealth Fund declined to comment. A representative for Globalia and the Hidalgo family said they did not want to comment on an ongoing operation because of confidentiality issues. Lufthansa declined to comment. An Air France-KLM spokesperson said the airline is interested in reinforcing its longstanding cooperation with Air Europa. Binding bids would mark the next phase of a prolonged sale process as Air Europa seeks to raise cash to repay a government loan granted during the pandemic. A previous plan had aimed for binding bids in May, two of the sources said. The process has faced delays due in part to disagreements between members of the Hidalgo family and concerns from interested airlines on the structure of the deal, according to the two sources and a fourth one said. The interested parties are working with advisers to structure bids in the hope that buying a minority stake of about 20% may put them in a better position to take control of the airline in the future, the two sources added. Some potential suitors have expressed concern over a lack of clarity about how they may be able to do that, according to the fourth person with knowledge of the talks. Last year, BA-owner IAG (ICAG.L), opens new tab which has a 20% stake, abandoned a deal to take full ownership of the airline after regulators raised issues over competition given its ownership of Spanish carrier Iberia. It also owns Vueling and Aer Lingus. Pressure has mounted on airlines to consolidate in Europe to better compete with major global rivals from the United States and the Middle East. Many are focusing on the most popular routes in southern Europe as a target for expansion. Air Europa flies within Spain and between Madrid and large cities in Europe and Latin America.

A Place in the Sun star Scarlette Douglas was meant to be on plane which crashed and killed her friend

Former I'm A Celebrity star Scarlette opened up about her fear of flying after she was supposed to be on the doomed Air France flight. A Place in the Sun host Scarlette Douglas has admitted that she "hates flying" because she was supposed to be on a doomed plane which crashed and killed more than 200 people. Despite hosting the popular travel show, Scarlette revealed that she really dislikes air travel after her friend died when Air France Flight 447 crashed into the mid-Atlantic Ocean in June 2009. All 228 people onboard, including Scarlette's friend, lost their lives in the tragedy. According to The Mirror, Scarlette was meant to be on the Airbus A330 after her friend booked both their seats. ‌ However, the presenter had a job in Hollywood so didn't travel in the end. ‌ Scarlette, who appeared on I'm A Celebrity in in 2022, made the heartbreaking admission at the Taste of London Food Festival opening party in Regent's Park this week. Speaking to a Daily Mail reporter, she said: "I lost a really good friend of mine in the Air France crash from Brazil to France. The scary thing was I was supposed to be on that flight. She had booked it." Scarlette says she "hates flying" as a result, which proved a challenge for her role on A Place in the Sun. She hosted the programme and its various spin-offs between 2015 and 2022, before her I'm a Celeb stint. The star was asked about flying in the wake of the Air India plane crash, which saw all but one of those onboard the Boeing die in a horror crash. A total of 53 Brits were killed after the plane, destined for Gatwick Airport, collided into a medical college in Ahmedabad, western India. Although the investigation into the crash continues, an aviation expert has claimed the co-pilot pulled the plane's wing flaps instead of retracting the landing gear moments after take-off. ‌ But inconsistent airspeed indications and miscommunication led to the pilots inadvertently stalling the doomed Air France plane, on which Scarlette's friend travelled in 2009. They failed to recover the plane from the stall, and the plane crashed into the mid-Atlantic Ocean. The investigation was hampered because the aircraft's flight recorders were not recovered from the ocean floor until May 2011, nearly two years after the accident. Eventually, the final - and conclusive - report by France's Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety (BEA) was published on July 2012. The majority of those onboard the four-year-old Airbus were Brazilians and French citizens. However, five tragic Brits died in the atrocity, including 11-year-old boy Alexander Bjoroy, oil worker Graham Gardner and PR executive Neil Warrior.
