A person is killed in Brussels in the fourth shooting in a week linked to drug gangs
Gunfire in Brussels killed one person Friday in what Belgian officials said was the fourth shooting in the past week believed linked to drug gangs, prompting a government vow to boost police on the city's streets.
It was the first fatal shooting in the spate of violence in the Anderlecht and St. Josse neighborhoods. The previous three shootings resulted only in one injury. Officials said they all had the hallmarks of drug-related violence, not terrorism.
'It is more than likely that the shootings are linked,' Prosecutor General Frédéric Van Leeuw told VRT network.
Justice Minister Annelies Verlinden said police presence needs to be increased throughout the city.
'A lot of people work here, visit us. And the reality of the past days forces us to take absolutely good care of Brussels,' Verlinden said. 'Criminals are extremely flexible, so if we don't have (police) everywhere, we will fix nothing because the problem will just move somewhere else.'
There have been previous shootings in Brussels, but to have four within a week has raised alarm. Citizens' groups have increasingly complained about lawlessness in several Brussels neighborhoods at night, and have demanded a bigger police presence.
Belgium's port in Antwerp, 35 miles (55 kilometers) to the north, has increasingly been the center of European imports of cocaine, and has been hit by grenade explosions linked to gangland fighting. Security officials have said that the violence was bound to trickle into other cities in Belgium.

Three teenage girls plead guilty to killing of 75-year-old man in north London street
Three teenage girls have pleaded guilty to the 'senseless' killing of a 75-year-old man in a street attack in north London filmed on a mobile phone. Fredi Rivero, a Bolivian national, was attacked by the teenagers, aged 15, 16 and 17, in Islington on 27 February, and died in hospital the next day. Rivero, who has been described as a 'much-loved family man', was near a bus stop on Seven Sisters Road when the girls got off a bus and surrounded him. His glasses were stolen, and he was pushed, shoved, kicked and punched while one of the teenagers filmed the incident on her phone. Police officers later recovered CCTV footage of the assault in which the 17-year-old girl could be seen punching Rivero in the head, causing him to fall backwards. He was found unconscious by police with a severe head injury and in cardiac arrest at 11.25pm on the night of the attack. DI Devan Taylor from Scotland Yard said: 'Mr Rivero was a much-loved family man who died in a truly tragic incident. I know how much his death has impacted those close to him and the wider community. 'I would like to offer my heartfelt sympathy to Mr Rivero's family for their loss and express my admiration for the dignity they have shown throughout the investigation. I also wish to thank the members of public who went to Mr Rivero's aid as he lay injured. 'The young defendants have now accepted they were responsible for the killing of Mr Rivero, in what was a senseless and completely out of the blue attack on a lone, elderly man. The age of the defendants adds to the devastating nature of this incident and they will now have to deal with the enormity of their actions.' Appearing before the Old Bailey via video link, the teenagers, who cannot be identified because of their ages, pleaded guilty to manslaughter. They will be sentenced by judge Judy Khan KC on 5 September. The victim's daughter, ex-wife and cousins were in court for the hearing. Khan ordered reports and remanded the defendants into custody, to be sentenced on 5 September.

THE Orkney Assassin, Michael Ross, was just 15 years old when he murdered waiter Shamsuddin Mahmood. On June 2 1994, Ross shot the waiter while he served customers in an Indian restaurant in Orkney, an island located off the northern coast of Scotland. Where is Michael Ross now? Michael Ross, born on 28 August 1978, was found guilty of the murder in 2008 and is serving a life sentence in HMP Shotts in Lanarkshire, with a minimum of 25 years. Ross was originally questioned by police six months after the murder of the 26-year-old waiter, but prosecutors ruled there was not enough evidence to charge the teenager. In the following summer, Ross left the island of Orkney, where he was born, and 17 joined the Scottish regiment. From there, he progressed through the ranks and became a decorated Black Watch sniper after serving a tour of duty in Iraq. But on June 20 2008, he was brought to justice in the High Court in Glasgow. During his guilty verdict, Ross, dramatically tried to flee by jumping out of the dock and knocking over the security guard. Now 47 years old, Ross has tried to escape HMP Shotts, one of Scotland's highest security prisons, three times, including an attempt to scale the fence in 2018. Shamsuddin had arrived in Orkney only six weeks before and had plans to return to Bangladesh to marry his fiancée. Shamsuddin's murder was the first to take place on the island in 25 years and during the original investigation, 2,736 statements were taken. Ross' mother Moira, recounted the time Michael came home from the police station when he was 16 years old. She went upstairs and asked whether he had shot Shamsuddin six months before, which he denied. During the investigation, Edmund Ross' career as a police officer ended after he lied about the fact that he owned identical bullets to those used in the murder weapon. Edmund Ross was subsequently jailed for four years in 1997 for perverting the course of justice. It is reported that Michael Ross' earliest possible release is in 2035. Three killed in Ukraine as Russia continues drones offensive
According to the Ukrainian air force, Russia launched a barrage of 63 drones and decoys at Ukraine overnight. It said that air defences destroyed 28 drones while another 21 were jammed. Ukraine's police said two people were killed and six were injured over the past 24 hours in the eastern Donetsk region, the focus of the Russian offensive. One person was killed and 14 others were also injured in the southern Kherson region, which is partly occupied by Russian forces, police said. The head of the Kharkiv region, Oleh Syniehubov, said 15 people, including four children, were injured by Russian drone attacks overnight. Kharkiv city mayor Ihor Terekhov said Russian drones targeted residential districts, educational facilities, nurseries and other civilian infrastructure. 'Kharkiv is holding on. People are alive. And that is the most important thing,' Mr Terekhov said. The Russian military has launched waves of drones and missiles in recent days, with a record bombardment of almost 500 drones on Monday and a wave of 315 drones and seven missiles overnight on Tuesday. The recent escalation in aerial attacks has come alongside a renewed Russian battlefield push along eastern and north-eastern parts of the 600-mile front line. While Russian missile and drone barrage have struck regions all across Ukraine, regions along the front line have faced daily Russian attacks with short-range exploding drones and glide bombs. Ukraine hit back with drone raids, with Russia's defence ministry saying air defences downed 52 Ukrainian drones early on Thursday, including 41 over the Belgorod region that borders Ukraine. Speaking at a meeting of leaders of south-east European countries in Odesa, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the European Union to toughen its latest package of sanctions against Russia. German defence minister Boris Pistorius arrived in Kyiv on Thursday on an unannounced visit, noting that the stepped-up Russian attacks on Ukraine send a message from Moscow that it has 'no interest in a peaceful solution at present', according to German news agency dpa. Pistorius said his visit underlines that the new German government continues to stand by Ukraine. 'Of course this will also be about how the support of Germany and other Europeans will look in future – what we can do, for example, in the area of industrial co-operation, but also other support,' he said.
