Chinese fans, media query empty seats at ‘sold-out' ITTF World Table Tennis Championships

Chinese media outlets have queried the ticket sales at the supposedly sold-out ITTF World Table Tennis Championships in Doha after some poorly attended matches during the opening weekend.

Banks of empty seats were seen at Lusail Sports Arena and Qatar University for a large number of matches, although fans did show up at the multipurpose hall in Lusail when China's Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha beat Liang Jishan and Amy Wang of the United States in their mixed doubles match on Sunday.
In other matches, including when French duo Simon Gauzy and Prithika Pavade overcame German pair Patrick Franziska and Annett Kaufmann at Lusail on Sunday afternoon, hardly any seats were filled at the 15,300-seat arena.
Scenes on the opening two days of the nine-day tournament were in stark contrast to Petra Sorling's claim earlier this month that all the tickets at the World Championships had sold out – the ITTF president had said she was 'shocked', suggesting it was a rare occurrence for sports events held in the Middle East.

'This was a unique phenomenon, we hope to study the causes further,' said the 54-year-old Swede.

Al-Hilal's presentation gaffer gaffe: did they hire the wrong Inzaghi?

Al-Hilal finally got the manager they wanted ... or did they? The Saudi Arabian giants announced Simone Inzaghi as their new manager on Thursday in what was considered quite a coup, as the Italian led Inter Milan to two Champions League finals in three years. However, eagle-eyed viewers spotted something a little off in the club's announcement video, which left them wondering if he really had been their target all along. At around 25 seconds into the short clip, commentary of 'Inzaghi' scoring a goal is played in the background. Yet it was not from Simone's playing days, but rather his brother Filippo during AC Milan's 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the 2007 Champions League Final, in which he scored both goals. The two brothers were both centre-forwards, though Filippo enjoyed slightly more success.

‘Italian genius' Simone Inzaghi to coach Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal – first task: Real Madrid

Former Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi was revealed as the new coach of Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal on Thursday, days before they take part in the new-look Club World Cup. Advertisement The Italian, who led Inter to a heavy defeat in Saturday's Champions League final, had earlier played down rumours of a two-year deal worth €50 million (US$57 million). 'I am Simone Inzaghi and today begins my story with Al-Hilal,' he said in a slickly produced video posted on X, in which he sips Arabian coffee and pins an Al-Hilal lapel badge on his suit. Inzaghi, 49, becomes just the latest high-profile footballing acquisition for oil-rich Saudi Arabia, which will host the World Cup in 2034. 'The Italian genius is here,' Al-Hilal posted. 'Welcome, Simone Inzaghi.' The Saudi club said that the Italian had penned a two-year contract, with the signing taking place in Paris.

Jefferson-Wooden scorches to 100m win at track meet

Jefferson-Wooden scorches to 100m win at track meet Jefferson-Wooden set the world lead with her 10.73-second 100m dash. Photo: AFP US sprinter Melissa Jefferson-Wooden clocked a world-leading 10.73sec as she stormed to an emphatic victory in the 100m at the Philadelphia Grand Slam Track meeting. The 24-year-old from South Carolina, a bronze medallist in the 100m at the Paris Olympics last year, scorched home ahead of Tamari Davis, who was second in 11.03sec. Thelma Davies was third in 11.14sec while Olympic 200m gold medallist Gabby Thomas – beaten by Jefferson-Wooden in Saturday's 200m – was fourth. Jefferson-Wooden's time vaults her into elite company as one of the 10 fastest women over 100m in history. "It means everything, I've been working so hard for this," a delighted Jefferson-Wooden said afterwards. "I've been learning so many new things about myself the way I go about training, the way I go about being disciplined, even when I'm not feeling my best, " she added. "It's just all coming together." Jefferson-Wooden's time was only fractionally outside Julien Alfred's winning time in the 100m at the Olympics last year, and suggests the American will be one of the favourites for gold at this year's World Championships in Tokyo, provided she qualifies at next month's US trials in Eugene. In other races on Sunday, Britain's Josh Kerr avenged his Olympic 1,500m defeat to Cole Hocker in a thrilling battle. Hocker famously surged past Kerr to claim a shock victory in Paris last August at the Stade de France and take gold. But on Sunday it was Kerr's turn to produce a decisive finish, storming past Hocker in the final few metres to win in 3min 34.44sec. (AFP)
