Makar wins Norris Trophy as NHL's top defenceman for 2nd time in his career
Cale Makar capped another banner NHL season with the award that goes to the league's top defenceman.
The Colorado Avalanche blueliner claimed the James Norris Trophy for the 2024-25 campaign after also earning it in 2022.
The 26-year-old from Calgary has been nominated for the Norris five times in his first six years in the league.
Makar was the overwhelming choice of Professional Hockey Writers Association voters this year with 176 first-place votes among 191 cast.

His 1,861 voting points beat out runner-up Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets (1,266) and last year's winner Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks (918).

With 30 goals and 62 assists, Makar set an Avalanche record for points by a defenceman. He became the fifth defenceman all-time in the NHL to post back-to-back 90-point seasons and the first since Paul Coffey and Al MacInnis in 1989-90 and 1990-91.

The Avalanche went 49-29-4 this past season before their elimination in the first round in seven games by the Dallas Stars.
Makar was golfing in his hometown of Calgary when he was surprised by friends and family, including his wife and parents, with the trophy.
The NHL posted a video of the celebration Wednesday.
'Any time you get recognized for something like this it's very cool,' Makar said in the video. 'It's very special to be able to do this a second time.
'It's truly a team award and we had a fun year, and it'll hopefully be more fun continuing, but this one's for them.'

Devon Toews, Makar's defensive partner with the Avs and with Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off, said in a video posted by the team, 'Congrats on your second Norris Trophy. I'm sure you'd have three or four more if I wasn't anchoring you down, but super-proud of you.'
Added forward Nathan MacKinnon: 'Congratulations on your Norris. Feels like 10. Apparently, it's only two.'
Makar opened the season with a 13-game point streak, which was the second-longest to start behind Bobby Orr's 15 games in 1973-74.
Makar was also the first defenceman to score 30 goals since Mike Green's 31 with the Washington Capitals in 2008-09.
He became the second active defenceman with multiple Norris wins, alongside Pittsburgh Penguin Erik Karlsson with three.

Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl and Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov were the other Hart finalists, just ahead of Colorado's reigning MVP Nathan MacKinnon, as chosen by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Hellebuyck was a landslide winner of the Vezina as picked by general managers. Hellebuyck won the Vezina for a second year in a row and for the third time in his career. He backstopped the Jets to the Presidents' Trophy for the best regular season and the William Jennings Trophy for the fewest goals allowed before losing in the second round of the playoffs to Dallas. Price was the last to pull off the Hart-Vezina double in 2015. Hellebuyck is just the sixth goalie to do it, joining Price, Jose Theodore in 2002, Dominik Hasek in 1997 and '98 and Jacques Plante in '62. Kucherov, the Art Ross Trophy winner for leading all scorers with 122 points this season, was also chosen for the Ted Lindsay Award as most outstanding player, as voted on by his peers. The Russian winger was MVP in 2019 when the Lightning finished atop the standings. Draisaitl, the Rocket Richard Trophy recipient for scoring a league-high 52 goals, won the Hart in 2020 after the season was cut short by the pandemic. He became the first German player to be MVP. Jets goaltender Hellebuyck cements spectacular campaign with Hart, Vezina awards
Connor Hellebuyck will have to make room for some more hardware. The Winnipeg Jets goaltender won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player Thursday. He also captured the Vezina Trophy as the league's top netminder for a third time. Hellebuyck is the first goalie to claim the Hart since Montreal's Carey Price a decade ago. The 32-year-old from Commerce, Mich., topped the stats page this season with a 47-12-3 record, a .925 save percentage and a 2.00 goals-against average to go along with eight shutouts. Tampa Bay Lightning winger Nikita Kucherov and Edmonton Oilers centre Leon Draisaitl were the other Hart finalists. Kucherov won the Ted Lindsay Award as league MVP last week in a vote among members of the NHL Players' Association. Hellebuyck joins a list of Hart-winning goaltenders that also includes Roy Worters (1928-29), Chuck Rayner (1949-50), Al Rollins (1953-54), Jacques Plante (1961-62), Dominik Hasek (1996-97, 1997-98) and Jose Theodore (2001-02).
