Minjee Lee has 1st bogey-free round at windy Women's PGA to take 4-shot lead into final day

Washington Post12 hours ago

FRISCO, Texas — Minjee Lee knows how to play in windy conditions having growing up in Australia and now living in North Texas. She also has experience winning majors.
The two-time major champion is in position for another one after the first bogey-free round for anyone during the wind-swept KPMG Women's PGA Championship. Her 3-under 69 in the third round Saturday pushed her into the lead, four strokes ahead of Jeeno Thitikul.
'I'm constantly practicing in windy conditions ... It is windy, but not this windy, and it's really consistent as well,' Lee said. 'Yes, I can hit a knock-down shot, but you also have to play the wind. You have to play so much extra out here that you have to be a little more creative.'
Lee was at 6-under 210 after beginning the round three strokes behind Thitikul, the world's No. 2-ranked player who led alone at the end of each of the first two days. Lee went ahead to stay with a 2-foot par at the 405-yard 12th hole when Thitikul had her second consecutive bogey, and fourth of the day on way to a round of 76.
'She played absolutely an `A' game for sure,' Thitikul said. 'I never saw her miss today at all.'
When Lee did miss, she was 7-for-7 scrambling.
Far from tree-lined Sahalee outside Seattle where the Women's PGA was last year, Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco is much more open and exposed to the ever-present Texas wind that was the strongest it had been all week. There were gusts of more than 30 mph Saturday, with much the same forecast for Sunday. Temperatures were again in the mid-90s.
Nelly Korda, the world's top-ranked player, described the conditions as 'just brutal' after her round of 72 that began with back-to-back bogeys. She finished with five birdies and five bogeys and is tied for sixth at 2-over 218.
Lee and Thitikul, seeking her first major title, were the only players still under par and will play together again Sunday. Lexi Thompson (75), after a triple-bogey start , was tied for third at 1 over with Hye Jin Choi (72) and Miyu Yamashita (73).
Thitikul, from Thailand, had the only birdie Saturday among the 78 players on the 172-yard, par-3 eighth hole, which generally plays downwind and where only 29% of the tee shots all week have stayed on the green. That 13-foot birdie was her first of the day and got her to 5 under, two strokes ahead of Lee.
But Thitikul's lead was gone after back-to-back bogeys on the back side. She pushed a 4-foot par chance past the hole at the 383-yard 11th, her first miss inside 5 feet this week. Then her drive at the 417-yard 12th hole went way right into a penalty area.
Lee, who won the 2022 U.S. Women's Open and 2021 Evian Championship in France, was steady Saturday with eight consecutive pars before a 4-foot birdie at the 487-yard ninth hole. Her other birdies were an 18-footer at the 515-yard, par-5 14th and a 1 1/2-foot at the bunker-surrounded 236-yard par 4 15th hole.
While acknowledging that a four-stroke lead 'feels really big,' Lee isn't taking anything for granted.
'Obviously, major Sunday is a different story. This is round three, so I think, you know, I have to still dig deep and post a score, even with a four-shot lead,' she said. 'So I'm just going to put my head down and just work on the things that I can do and do it to the best of my ability.'
Thitikul three-putt from 50 feet at No. 14 was her third bogey in a four-hole stretch.
'Definitely frustrated about the result today a little bit, like not really making putts like the first two days,' Thitikul said. 'But like still on the positive side that, just two players making under par after three rounds, and I'm one.'
Semi-retired Thompson, in the second-to-last group, hit her tee shot into the fairway on the 517-yard par-5 first hole, a 207-yard drive into the wind. But she topped her second shot that went only 117 yards, then shanked her next shot right, a ball that was never found for a penalty on way to triple bogey. She followed with another bogey on the second hole, but had two birdies and only one bogey the rest of the way.
Thompson, playing for only the seventh time in 16 tournaments this season, won her only major in the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship, but her 13 top-five finishes in majors since 2013 are the most by any player and among her 20 top-10 finishes in those events.
LPGA rookie Rio Takeda opened with a bogey 6 at the first hole after starting the round tied with with Lee for second place. Takeda later had a pair of double bogeys/
Grace Kim had the best round of the day with a 68 that included six birdies and two bogeys, moving up from a tie for 68th to tied for 10th. Minjee Lee and Andrea (71) had the only other under-par rounds. Kim, among 11 players who got to the weekend right on the 7-over cut, teed off at 6:55 a.m. local time, six hours before the final group did.
There was even a hole-in-one, Brianna Do acing the 150-yard fourth hole.

Also rising to the podium, Monster Army rider Asahi Kaihara claimed the silver medal in front of a hometown crowd. Leading the charge, Ryan Williams unveiled one of his notorious trick creations to take the victory. A technical frontflip flair tailwhip on the quarterpipe earned 'R Willy' his second gold medal in the BMX Park Best Trick discipline, and the crowd went wild! "From the start to the finish, I was trying to get my trick, but all the boys just started throwing down left and right. "It's crazy. Most of us came into this knowing that we have another major X Games next week in the States. Should we roll the dice, should we try something? Or should we keep it clean and healthy? Peraza now owns 12 X Games medals (seven gold, three silver, and two bronze) Moto X Best Trick: Australia's Ben Richards Claims Silver Medal as Youngest Competitor A big first day at X Games Osaka 2025 ended with a major upset in the Moto X Best Trick final. On his first run of the final, Richards secured his podium spot by landing an ultra-rare handlebar hop variation known as Special Flip – performing a 360 body varial in his seat while in the air – for 91.00 points and the silver medal. Today's silver marks the first X Games medal for Richards in what is now his fourth appearance in the event. Richards' closest competition was no other than the most decorated rider in Moto X Best Trick, Jackson Strong. On his first run of the final, Strong put down a technical frontflip seat grab Indy for 90.00 points and the bronze medal, boosting his record-setting medal count to 18 total. Strong now owns 18 X Games medals (eight gold, six silver, and four bronze). Closely finishing outside of podium contention, Japanese style icon Taka Higashino stoked the hometown crowd with a classic performance and finished in fourth place. His highest-scoring trick of the final, a Rock Solid Indy Flip, earned 86.66 points. That's it for day one! Stay tuned for more X Games Osaka 2025! A crown earned, not given: Maro Itoje comes of age as first black British & Irish Lions captain

Maro Itoje, long hailed as a future leader, has become the first Black captain of the British & Irish Lions after finally taking charge of England earlier this year. A two-time tourist, Itoje brings experience, calm under pressure, and a selfless ethos to lead a squad blending stars from four nations. Despite early doubts from Eddie Jones, the Saracens lock has evolved into a complete leader, now tasked with guiding the Lions to victory in Australia. Maro Itoje was long tipped to be a Test captain but had to bide his time before being handed two giant roles within the space of a few months -- England skipper and the leadership of the British and Irish Lions. Itoje captained England's Under-20s to a world title in 2014 and as he rose through the ranks it was clear the Saracens lock was no ordinary player. A constant threat at the breakdown, outstanding at the line-out and punishing in defence, the physically powerful Itoje had all the skills required of a modern-day flanker, a position where he won some of his early caps, as well as a second row. But he was also something of a throwback to English rugby's amateur era, showing an impressive ability to communicate. The young Itoje, the son of Nigerian parents, won a scholarship to the world-famous Harrow School -- whose former pupils include British wartime prime minister Winston Churchill. He excelled at school, going on to study politics at university in London before completing a business qualification alongside his rugby commitments. Itoje has amassed 93 England Test caps, winning three Six Nations trophies. He has also collected a mountain of silverware at club level, winning five Premiership titles and three European Champions Cups with Saracens. But despite his prowess on the pitch, former England coach Eddie Jones was not initially convinced that Itoje was cut out for leadership. In his book, "Leadership: Lessons From My Life In Rugby", published in 2021, the veteran Australian boss wrote: "I might be wrong, but I am not sure Maro is a future England captain. "He is going to be one of the great players, but he is very inward-looking. He drives himself rather than anyone else. He doesn't usually influence people off the field." Jones backtracked shortly after the book's publication, explaining that Itoje had matured rapidly, predicting he would be a future England skipper. 'Calm under pressure' Steve Borthwick took over from Jones in December 2022 but Owen Farrell was captain at the time and was succeeded by Jamie George. Itoje was finally handed the job in January this year at the ripe old age of 30. "Calm under pressure" were the words Borthwick used to describe his new skipper, citing Itoje's growing influence upon the rest of the squad. AFP The new man made his mark, leading England to a second place in this season's Six Nations, and caught the eye of Lions boss Andy Farrell, the father of Owen. Itoje's rival for the Lions captaincy for the three-Test Australia tour, Ireland skipper Caelan Doris, misses out through injury. "As a two-time tourist (in 2017 and 2021), Maro fully understands what the Lions is all about and also the role of the captain in helping the group achieve its goal of winning a Test series this summer," said Farrell. Itoje, the first black captain of the Lions, spoke of the "tremendous honour" when he was named skipper. "I feel like I'm ready to do the role," he told Sky Sports. "I think I'm ready to do the job and I gain confidence from the quality of coaches we have, the quality of support staff we have and the quality of personnel we have within our squad." The lock has the task of getting the best out of the top players from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales in Australia and is clear about what he expects. "I want this Lions squad to be tough. I look at our forwards and I see a group of tough men," he said. "The Lions works when the players are selfless, so to make sure it's a successful tour we all have to be selfless and put the Lions at the forefront of everything we do." Itoje brushed off Friday's 28-24 warm-up defeat against Argentina in Dublin, saying his side will "live, learn and get better".

Kansas City Chiefs Week 14 opponent recalls last season's divisional matchup

The Kansas City Chiefs were a victory away from completing the first three-peat in NFL history. They fell short in Super Bowl LIX but got past talented teams in the AFC, including the Houston Texans. Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. attended Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud's appearance at Fanatics Fest NYC, speaking on a panel called 'Franchise Faces' with Peyton and Eli Manning, Caleb Williams, and Bryce Young, hosted by Kay Adams. He opened up about his sophomore season and falling short in Kansas City. "So for me, when things come up, or like last season, not having exactly the season I wanted, but you know, still going to the playoffs, still, won another playoff game. There's still positives in that, and there's still a lot of learning," said Stroud, "I'm only 23 years old, I believe I'm one of the youngest quarterbacks, and that's no excuse or pat on my back." Stroud passed for 244 yards and two touchdowns against Kansas City but also threw two interceptions in the divisional-round loss. He was also sacked eight times but is determined to bounce back in 2025. "I have a lot of learning to do, and to be able to get so close to winning two divisional games or not, the first in Baltimore (Ravens) got us pretty good, but to be in the game with Kansas City (Chiefs) all game," said Stroud, "Playing in that atmosphere and learning, I know, if you know God ordains that for us to be back in that position if we do what we need to do, the experiences that I've had in the past will help that on what it takes to win in the fourth quarter because that's really what the game comes down to. So I can't say that last year was a good or bad year, in my opinion, but internally, my expectations for this year are probably higher than a lot of people's outside expectations." Stroud would continue his stay at Fanatics Fest NYC, greeting fans and participating in the many on-site activities. One of the festival's many activities includes the Nike and LEGO Group Play Arena, an active basketball-themed experience open to all attendees. Guests participated in various activities, including games on a Nike x LEGO basketball court, an Athlete Studio experience where attendees created personalized LEGO jerseys and trading cards, and an MVP Tunnel Walk.
