DAP: JPJ Sarawak's swift resolution over ePlate compliance commendable

KUCHING (May 7): The Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) has commended the state's Road Transport Department (JPJ) for swiftly addressing public confusion over its ePlate system.
This comes after an incident where a member of the public received a notice from JPJ claiming their electric vehicle (EV) number plate did not comply with specifications, despite it having been issued by an authorised dealer under the department's ePlate system.
Michael Kong, the special assistant to Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng jen, said he had been contacted by the affected individual, and immediately brought the matter to the attention of JPJ Sarawak director Norizan Jili.
'Upon review, JPJ Sarawak resolved the matter without penalising the EV owner. Their cooperation and responsiveness are commendable,' he said in a statement yesterday.
The ePlate initiative was introduced by the Transport Ministry in September 2024, and aims to standardise vehicle number plates starting with EVs and eventually extending to internal combustion engine vehicles, to improve enforcement and eliminate non-compliant designs.

Kong said that while DAP supports forward-thinking reforms such as the ePlate system, any new policies should be implemented with the public's interest at heart.
'It is important to remember the ePlate system is still in its pilot phase. As with any new policy, there will be initial teething issues.
'Any potential confusion or unintended consequences must be addressed swiftly and fairly,' he said, adding continuous engagement with stakeholders and the public is essential to ensuring the smooth rollout of the initiative.
He said Sarawak DAP remains committed to working closely with all relevant authorities to ensure that this transition towards a standardised plate system is smooth, efficient, and ultimately beneficial for all Malaysians. Democratic Action Party electric vehicles ePlate Road Transport Department

Govt needs to rethink implementation of 'confusing' expanded SST, says MCA Youth
MCA Youth urges the government to seriously reconsider the manner it is implementing the expanded Sales and Services Tax (SST). The confusion we are currently witnessing is not just a matter of poor coordination—it is a matter of public trust and economic fairness. The government must answer a very simple yet critical question: is the expanded SST enforcement to be based on what is officially written in the Government Gazette, or on verbal explanations given by the Ministry of Finance's spokespersons? This lack of clarity is unacceptable in tax policy, especially one that affects the daily cost of living for ordinary Malaysians.

M'sian quits after receiving RM85 ‘token of appreciation'
WHILE many teachers quietly endure under appreciation, one international school educator has had enough — after receiving a measly amount as a 'Token of Appreciation'. In a post on Threads, the teacher shared a snapshot of her so-called 'Token of Appreciation' letter from her employer, which awarded her RM85 for exceeding her Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in 2024. 'Perfect work, always on time, KPI above 90%, but this is what I get? What can you even buy with RM85?' she wrote. The woman who works at an international school said that the amount left her feeling insulted — not rewarded. 'Decision: Resigned. ALSO READ: M'sian employee's hilariously honest resignation goes viral 'Don't let your dignity be dragged down by a company like this,' she declared at the end of her post — a line that's resonating strongly with readers. Her experience struck a nerve with many Malaysians, who jumped into the comments to share similar stories of disappointing recognition at work. 'Been there. Big company, publicly listed on Bursa Malaysia. Even with top-notch KPIs, they only gave an annual increment of RM60,' one user wrote. 'I've experienced the same — even worse, I got just RM50. Hahaha. So I figured, might as well not bother working after that. Started job hunting... then I left,' said another. 'It's kind of funny — working yourself to the bone, exhausted, and all you get is RM85,' added @elena_raisya. READ MORE: M'sians share how traffic jam led to them resigning jobs
