Children swept away in school bus among at least 49 killed in South Africa flooding
At least 49 people are confirmed dead after flooding hit South Africa, including children whose school bus was swept away during the extreme weather, officials said.
An intense cold front has ripped across parts of South Africa, bringing rain and snow and triggering floods.
In the Eastern Cape, one of the hardest-hit provinces, floodwaters have forced many people out of their homes, causing power outages and road closures, according to the provincial authority.
Earlier on Wednesday, the state broadcaster SABC reported that a school bus was swept into a river in Decoligny village on Tuesday morning while en route to school.
The provincial government said that 13 people, including pupils, their driver, and his assistant, were on the bus.
'Sadly four of those learners have been confirmed to be deceased together with the driver and the conductor of the mini-bus', Eastern Cape premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane said in a briefing Wednesday afternoon.
Four others remain missing, he said, adding that rescue teams were still searching for more bodies.
President Cyril Ramaphosa's office said in an earlier statement that three children were rescued from the vehicle during a condolence message to bereaved families.
South Africa has grappled with flooding in recent years with some of them deadly.
In 2022, floods fueled by heavy downpours left up to 400 people dead in Durban and the KwaZulu-Natal province.

NordVPN Andy Walker / Android Authority Every internet user needs a VPN, and after much consideration, I chose NordVPN. Nord was the easiest and most reliable option I tried, which is also crucial for my partner. I use it across multiple devices, nearing the 10-device limit. This more than justifies its annual fee. Although it's one of the pricier subscriptions I pay for, it gives me peace of mind. I may consider another VPN service in the future, but Nord suits my needs for now. F1TV Andy Walker / Android Authority As a Formula 1 fan, I can't imagine not having access to support races, grands prix, and past events. F1TV is the sport's dedicated streaming service, providing access to all the above on multiple devices. The service has three tiers, and I opt for the middle option, Pro. It offers access to all timing and telemetry, onboard cameras, support series races, and past content. It's pricey, but worth it for enjoying the sport I've loved for over two decades. A more expensive option allows for 4K streaming and multiple simultaneous streams on a single device, but that little trick is limited to Apple products for now. I use the 200GB plan but'll soon need more storage or an alternative. My partner also uses the storage as part of my family group, so switching services will be tricky. A self-hosted solution is in the planning stages, but decision inertia is real. I know that for the price of a One subscription, I could save up for a large hard drive, but the convenience of One is still compelling. Boyes Drive closed to traffic as firefighters battle Muizenberg mountain fire
Multiple firefighting teams are currently fighting a fire that broke out above Boyes Drive in Muizenberg. The fire is presently burning in the direction of Kalk Bay and St James. Boyes Drive is closed to the public until further notice. Boyes Drive in Muizenberg has been closed to traffic following a fire that broke out on the mountain slopes above it on Sunday morning. The fire broke out at about 08:30, and a call for assistance was made to the City of Cape Town's Fire and Rescue Services Department. According to Fire and Rescue spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, several resources were dispatched to the scene as well as the Incident Management Teams (IMT) to coordinate operational functions. 'The right flank was quickly secured. However, the concern is the left flank that is slowly spreading towards Kalk Bay,' Carelse said. He added that they are being assisted by Table Mountain National Parks (TMNP) and Volunteer Wildfire Services in efforts to get the fire under control. 'Emergency services are currently at the scene, mobilising multiple resources to combat the blaze that threatens to extend along the verdant hillsides surrounding this popular route,' the organisation added. SANParks head of communications JP Louw said in a statement that all available resources are being deployed in active suppression efforts, with a primary focus on keeping the fire above Boyes Drive. He added: The fire is presently burning along the left flank in the direction of Kalk Bay and St James. As of now, the fire is approximately 90% contained, thanks to the coordinated efforts of all firefighting teams on the ground. SANParks said Boyes Drive will be closed to the public until further notice to ensure public safety and facilitate firefighting operations.

The Mthatha floods death toll has risen to 88. The body of a 10-year-old girl who went missing in Libode was found on Sunday morning. The Eastern Cape Provincial Government will be hosting a provincial day of mourning on Thursday, in honour of those who lost their lives. The body of a 10-year-old girl who went missing in Libode, Eastern Cape has been found, bringing the total number of confirmed fatalities to 88 as a result of the Mthatha floods. The Eastern Cape Provincial Government on Sunday morning said of the 88 bodies where post-mortems have been completed, 83 have been positively identified by families and five are yet to be identified. 'About 56 bodies have been released to families at the end of the day on Saturday. The provincial government remains in close contact with affected families to provide necessities and psychosocial support,' the Eastern Cape government said in a statement. As rescue operations continue, Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has called on residents to report persons who went missing around Tuesday, 10 June 2025, in the areas that were affected by the severe weather conditions, to law enforcement. Mabuyane expressed deep concern for those still unaccounted for, saying the information from the public will assist in focusing efforts effectively and bringing closure to anxious families. To honour those who lost their lives, the province has announced it would hold a provincial day of mourning on Thursday, 19 June, in Decoligny Village, Mthatha. 'This solemn occasion is dedicated to honouring the memory of all the individuals who tragically lost their lives during these floods,' Mabuyane said. The premier determined that all non-essential programmes and events that were scheduled for this day in the province be postponed. 'The provincial government recognises the profound pain and loss suffered by the affected families and communities, and it remains committed to standing with them in this difficult time,' Mabuyane added. The event is open to the public, including faith-based organisations, religious leaders, and congregations across the province.
