BARCELONA (Reuters) - England defender Lucy Bronze said a positive result from Tuesday's Nations League game against world champions Spain would set her team up nicely for the defence of their European Championship title.
While England are coming off a 6-0 Nations League thrashing of Portugal on Friday at Wembley, Spain defeated Belgium 5-1 to remain top of the group with one game remaining. The winners of the four groups advance to the knockout finals starting in October.
"(A win would give us) a lot of confidence, but we already have beaten them this year so we've got a lot of confidence from that," Bronze told reporters on Monday, referring to England's 1-0 Nations League win over the Spaniards in February.
"That Spain performance from us in Wembley was brilliant. You can find things to gain confidence from. It's not the be-all and end-all (Tuesday)," she said. "In terms of the Nations League it is. (But) we might not even face Spain in the Euros. We get confidence from ourselves and others."
Tuesday's match in Barcelona is England's last before manager Sarina Wiegman announces her European Championship squad on Thursday.
"We are pretty close (to finalising the squad)," Wiegman said. "Still you want to go to the game tomorrow and then make the final decisions, but we are pretty close."
The one big Euros question mark is the fitness of Chelsea striker Lauren James, who has not played since suffering a hamstring injury in April.
"We're trying to get her fit. She's trying to get fit with all the support from Chelsea and us. She is doing really well," Wiegman said. "She needs to tick some boxes and progress. We need her to be fit and healthy and perform at her highest level."
Wiegman is also without defender Millie Bright, who withdrew from camp for an extended period saying she was "mentally and physically" at her limit.
"Millie is a real big personality and big player for England and Chelsea," Bronze said. "She's missed with what she brings on and off the pitch. We want to make sure she's OK both physically and mentally. She's someone who's quite tough and it's brave that she came out and spoke.."
England kick off their European Championship campaign in Switzerland against France on July 5.

Spain target ‘enormously important' Nations League defence

Spain players celebrate with the trophy after winning the Nations League final against Croatia in the 2023 tournament. (AP pic) BARCELONA : Spain are aiming to become the first side to defend the Nations League trophy, with Luis de la Fuente's side going from strength to strength on the international stage ahead of next year's World Cup. The coach enjoys recalling La Roja's triumph at the 2023 tournament, which was an early sign that a young Spain side were heading back to the top. It proved the springboard to Euro 2024 glory and De la Fuente wants to continue Spain's resurgence by retaining it this summer in Germany. It would bode well ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the US, Mexico and Canada next summer where Spain will be among the favourites. They face France in the Nations League semi-finals in Stuttgart before a potential final against Germany or Portugal. 'We attach enormous importance to it – it's almost more difficult than a European Championship, and we want to be the first team to win it twice,' De la Fuente told reporters last week. 'We want to continue competing at the highest level with these teams.' After European Championship wins in 2008 and 2012, sandwiching their World Cup 2010 triumph in South Africa, the Spanish national team slumped. Poor outings at the Russia and Qatar World Cups started to fade from memory, though, as De la Fuente's side beat Italy and Croatia to win the Nations League. It helped him on a personal level too, with many doubting his credentials and blaming him for an embarrassing defeat by Scotland in Euro 2024 qualifying. The Scots beat De la Fuente's Spain in March 2023 in what was their last competitive defeat, 23 matches ago. Spain beat Italy, Germany and France on the way to the Euro 2024 final, where they got the better of England to claim their first major trophy for 12 years. The worrying thing for the rest of the world is that De la Fuente's Spain team remains hungry, with many players yet to reach their peak. The side is led by Barcelona's teenage winger Lamine Yamal, who turned 17 on the eve of the Euro final, and on the opposite flank Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams, 22, also has his best years ahead of him. Barcelona midfield maestro Pedri, 22 as well, pulls the strings, while there are emerging talents in other areas including Porto striker Samu Aghehowa and new Real Madrid signing Dean Huijsen. Isco's return Despite a focus on younger players, De la Fuente showed he is not stubborn by turning to Real Betis midfielder Isco. After a superb season in which the former Real Madrid playmaker took the Andalusians to the Conference League final, the 33-year-old finally got the call he craved. Some said De la Fuente should have given Isco a chance last summer but the coach was proven right as his team went on to win the Euros. 'He's going to add a lot – if we had any doubts, he wouldn't have been here,' said De la Fuente. 'He could have been at the Euros, or not, but those who had to be there, were there.' Isco's presence gives Spain even more depth in a midfield packed with quality, and one which is still without Manchester City's Rodri Hernandez who has yet to return to action after missing most of the season injured. 'In Spain, we are privileged to have many very good footballers,' De la Fuente said during the Euros. 'I think they are the best players in the world for many reasons.' In almost every position the coach is blessed with multiple strong options, with the team perhaps only short of one elite striker – although it has not held them back. Aghehowa, 21, could develop into that player, although De la Fuente ran through all of his possible options there, including veteran Alvaro Morata, Dani Olmo as a false nine, or Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored the winner against England. 'This is a team, and in that team, everyone contributes their bit to make a stronger, more solid group,' said De la Fuente. 'Samu is fantastic, Alvaro, Mikel, Dani… we can play in many ways with different players and that is exactly what our strength is.'

England sweep West Indies series as Smith scores maiden ODI fifty

JAMIE Smith struck a maiden one-day international fifty to set-up England's victorious run-chase as they completed a 3-0 series sweep of the West Indies at his Oval home ground on Tuesday. Player-of-the-match Smith, opening in ODIs for the first time this series, launched England's pursuit of a revised target of 246 in a match reduced by rain to 40 overs per side with a quickfire 64. Victory meant Harry Brook led England to a clean sweep in his first series as permanent white-ball captain after they had lost their seven previous matches at this level, culminating in a lacklustre exit from this year's Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Brook was 26 not out at the finish but it was Jos Buttler, his predecessor as captain, who ended the match with an emphatic six out of the ground off fast bowler Jayden Seales that capped his unbeaten 41 off 20 balls. England made a blistering start to their chase, scoring 93 in the first seven overs. Smith's fifty came off 25 balls, including nine fours and two sixes. Fellow opener Ben Duckett got in on the act with consecutive sixes off Alzarri Joseph before the paceman's next ball saw him dropped at fine leg. An eventful seventh over started with Smith being dropped off left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie's first ball when Justin Greaves floored a relatively simple chance at short midwicket. Smith punched the next ball through cover for four and off the third of the over went to his fifty with a superb straight six. He followed that up with a four and a six off the next two balls before being bowled by Motie, who made a fine 63 in West Indies' total of 251-9. Smith's exit brought in Joe Root, fresh from steering England to a three-wicket win in Cardiff on Sunday with an ODI best of 166 not out that saw the star batsman become his country's leading run-scorer in this format. Duckett completed a 34-ball fifty including four fours and three sixes, before the left-hander fell for 58 when he flayed off-spinner Roston Chase to cover. New batsman Brook opened his account with a classic on-driven four off Seales, only to be dropped next ball when Chase put down a two-handed chance at point. Root could only manage 44 before he was caught top-edging a hook off Alzarri Joseph. But that still meant the player-of-the-series had scored 267 runs in three innings at an average of 133.5. Earlier, Sherfane Rutherford top-scored for the West Indies with 70 in his first match of the series. The tourists slumped to 121-6, with veteran England leg-spinner Adil Rashid (3-40) taking three wickets in quick succession. But Motie and Alzarri Joseph (41) shared an eighth-wicket stand of 91 in 12 overs before Smith made the West Indies' total look inadequate. The West Indies' day got off to a bad start when traffic problems meant they arrived at the ground late, delaying the start by 30 minutes. England avoided the traffic by riding bikes and made the most of winning the toss to leave their opponents 28-3 inside seven overs. West Indies will hope for a better showing when they face England in the first of a three-match Twenty20 series in Chester-le-Street on Friday.
