She Went on TV for Love, but Found It in Her DMs
When Kheri Orisha Carter decided to audition in 2021 for the fourth season of 'Ready to Love,' a dating reality show on Oprah Winfrey's OWN network, it was not her idea.
'It was actually a dare,' Ms. Carter said. 'I was looking for love, and I wanted to be in a committed relationship.' But she wasn't having much luck with the dating scene in Washington. 'It's small but big here,' she said. 'It's hard to connect.'
The show was a favorite of Ms. Carter and her friends. So, when they learned it was coming to Washington, they dared her to audition. She did, and after several interviews, she joined the cast.
Once on the show, she only made it through the first four episodes — which was long enough for Brian Thomas Carkhuff to take notice.
Though her time on the show was short-lived, she says now, 'I was obviously on so Brian could find me.'
After seeing her on the show, Mr. Carkhuff messaged Ms. Carter on Instagram on Dec. 15, 2021.
Ms. Carter 'struck me as intelligent, strong-willed, and composed, as well as sexy and beautiful,' Mr. Carkhuff said. 'I needed to meet her. I immediately followed her on Instagram and started liking her pictures.'
She had gotten a lot of messages, but Mr. Carkhuff seemed different, she said. 'He was a gentleman.'
'She had written a post about men who were 'thirsty,' and I used that post to slide in her DMs,' Mr. Carkhuff said. 'I am not that kind of guy and if you'd go out with me I can show you,' he said in his message.
After a phone call, she was confident he was who he said he was. They went on their first date, dinner at St. Anselm, a steakhouse in Washington's Union Market on Dec. 19, 2021.
It was an immediate and mutual attraction, both said. 'I thought she was even more beautiful in person than on the show,' Mr. Carkhuff said.

'He's very witty and observant,' Ms. Carter said, 'And the way he carried himself was very sexy.'
The second date, at O-Ku Sushi in Washington, and a third, ax throwing, soon followed.
They were still both casually dating other people, but when he saw her on social media at a Washington Wizards basketball game with someone else, and she saw him post about a trip he was on with another woman, it was time for a serious conversation.
'When I saw him on that trip, I knew I was serious,' she said. 'So, when we had the conversation I was very vulnerable with him.'
He got the message. 'I realized then how serious she was, so when I got back we talked about where we were headed,' Mr. Carkhuff said. 'That was two months into dating.'
After that, Ms. Carter said, 'We started to date exclusively.' And in April 2022, while on a trip to Miami for Mr. Carkhuff's birthday, they became official.
In August 2022, Ms. Carter moved into Mr. Carkhuff's home in the Trinidad neighborhood of Northeast Washington, where the two still live.
Mr. Carkhuff, 58, is a senior account executive at T-Mobile for Government. He graduated from National Louis University with a bachelor's degree in business management, and received an M.B.A. from Howard University. Mr. Carkhuff was born in Buffalo and raised in McLean, Va. He has two daughters from a previous marriage who are now 33 and 34 and one daughter from a previous relationship who is 29.
Ms. Carter, 41, is a real estate agent with RLAH @properties. She graduated from the University of Houston with a bachelor's degree in consumer science and merchandising. She was born and raised in Dallas.
Mr. Carkhuff proposed on March 7 in a private room at St. Anselm, where they had their first date. He created a ruse of having a late dinner with friends to surprise Ms. Carter, who said she knew something was up but she wasn't sure what. 'When you know someone it's hard to hide something like this,' she said.
The two were wed April 30 at the Superior Court of the District of Columbia Marriage Bureau by George Barbour, the branch chief of the Marriage Bureau. 'I felt like a teenager in love — giddy, ecstatic, and so proud to have just married my best friend,' Ms. Carter said.
Afterward, the two had lunch at the Capital Grille across from the courthouse with Ms. Carter's longtime friend, Ijeoma Azubuko.
'When we had lunch, a lot of people gave us a lot of love,' Ms. Carter said. 'Someone we didn't know surprised us by paying for our meal. It made me teary-eyed.' That evening they had dinner and drinks with a dozen friends at Sly Rooftop in the Morrow Hotel.
The couple plan to host a larger wedding celebration on June 20 in Georgetown. 'I wasn't sure I would ever find the kind of love and commitment Kheri and I have found in each other,' Mr. Carkhuff said. 'I felt like I truly solidified a life with my true partner.'

Juror issues marred the 21st day of testimony in Sean "Diddy" Combs' federal trial for sex crimes. Before cross-examination continued Wednesday of Diddy's ex-girlfriend, who testified using the pseudonym "Jane," the defense told Judge Arun Subramanian that they'd like to respond to the government's attempt to dismiss a Black juror from the case. The U.S. Attorney's Office allegedly told the court that while the situation was less than desirable, they were compelled to because of a lack of candor. The judge told the court he would rule on the issue if there was any basis for removing a juror and once the defense submitted a letter. New York attorney Nicole Brenecki told Fox News Digital that complications with the jury could lead to severe problems down the road, including a possible mistrial. "Every time that we engage in a jury trial, there's a process called voir dire, which is a process that both attorneys engage in, under the supervision of a judge, where the attorneys have an opportunity to question the potential jurors and ask them questions to make sure that they are not biased, that they're truthful, and that they are capable of adjudicating this case on its facts and not based on their individual biases or prejudice or whatever," Brenecki said. "If there's a letter discussing lack of candor, that means that maybe that juror just wanted to be on the jury because it's a high-profile case or because it involves a celebrity or perhaps for other personal reasons, but the lack of candor has to go to the fact that that juror potentially is biased in one way or another." In court on Tuesday, Diddy's lawyers objected to the U.S. Attorney's Office's request to remove Juror No. 6 from the case. "We object to ask Juror No. 6 being stricken, and I understand the colloquy is under seal, so I don't want to explain further on the record now, but if the government is going to put in a letter … we'd like the opportunity to be heard either in writing or tomorrow morning," Diddy attorney Alexandra Shapiro said. The judge said "everyone will be fully heard on this issue" once a letter is filed with the court. Former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani highlighted the negative effects a tainted jury may have on a case. "The big news of the day is that the judge is considering removing Juror 6 for lack of candor. That means he lied, in layman's terms. … This request was made by the prosecution, and the defense is trying to keep him on. For what it's worth, Juror 6 is a Black male and a '90s hip-hop fan." On Wednesday, Jane continued testimony about "hotel nights," where she claimed one time there were three entertainers at the party, and she allegedly did not take any drugs. She testified that while she agreed to the party, she also resented Diddy "for knowing how much I loved him and knowing how I couldn't say no to him." Under direct examination last week, the government asked Jane if she and Diddy experienced "hotel nights" without drugs. Jane explained that the former couple attempted the nights a handful of times, and it was at Diddy's request in October 2023 that they tried a "sobriety party." "Around this time, I just really wanted my partner to get sober," Jane testified. "I just really cared so much about Sean's health, and I could see that he just, like, was excessively partying on top of just so many pills that he takes daily for I don't know what. And I just really wanted him to get clean and just get better." She continued, "And he said, 'OK, I'm going to do like 30 days without anything, and I'll be sober. But let's just have, like, one more, one more sobriety party, just one, like, sobriety party.'" When asked what drugs Diddy used during the "sobriety party," Jane replied, "I believe ecstasy and cocaine, I don't know." She also alleged the party lasted "too long," claiming it was "close to 12 to 18 hours." Before cross-examination began Tuesday, Subramanian denied Diddy's second request for a mistrial. Diddy's legal team had argued that the prosecution knowingly presented false testimony to the court in a letter filed June 7 and obtained by Fox News Digital. In a federal indictment unsealed on Sept. 17, Combs was charged with racketeering conspiracy (RICO); sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion; and transportation to engage in prostitution. If found guilty, he faces a minimum of 15 years behind bars or a maximum sentence of life in prison. He has maintained his innocence throughout the trial, in which witnesses have testified to alleged rape, sexual assault, severe physical abuse, forced labor and drug trafficking. The trial is expected to wrap by July 4. Jane's cross-examination is expected to finish Thursday morning, and the government indicated they will rest their case by next Friday, but as early as next Wednesday.

Kate Beckinsale Sues 'Canary Black 'Producers for Continuing to Expose Her to 'Dangerous and Unsafe Conditions' After Suffering an Injury on Set
Kate Beckinsale starred in the Amazon thriller, Canary Black, in October 2024, which began production in 2022 The actress alleges in a new complaint that the film's producers exposed her to "dangerous and unsafe conditions" Beckinsale initially filed a complaint as Jane Doe in December 2024, before amending the complaint and going public with her name in May 2025Kate Beckinsale is suing the Canary Black producers after allegedly being exposed to "dangerous and unsafe conditions,' according to a complaint obtained by PEOPLE. The 51-year-old actress starred in the crime film in 2024, which was released on Oct. 3. Over seven months later, the actress is accusing the film's production company, Anton Entertainment Media Services, Inc., and its employees, including producer John Zois, of negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and battery. Puck was the first to report the news. Beckinsale initially filed against the producers in December 2024 as 'Jane Doe.' However, she issued an amended complaint on Wednesday, May 21, including communications with the defendants and more details of her on-set injury. Beckinsale first suffered a complex meniscus tear in her left knee while filming in December 2022. She then needed surgery, which subsequently paused the production for months. Before she returned to set, she claims her orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Jason Snibbe, said she should not be asked to perform stunts that involved running, jumping, harness suspension, squatting or kicking, per the complaint. However, Dr. Snibbe's requests were allegedly ignored. Beckinsale's complaint claims that she suffered further aggravation of the knee injury as her doctor's orders were repeatedly ignored and she was allegedly coerced into performing "unsafe action sequences." In the newly amended complaint, Beckinsale allegedly suffered a 'significant trauma' to her knee after she was exposed to "dangerous and unsafe conditions" on the Canary Black set. "Ms. Beckinsale and her team repeatedly raised red flags regarding unsafe conditions on and off set to Defendants, including long, dangerous set days, often lasting fifteen hours, inadequate equipment and medical personnel to help manage the high physical workload and recover from the exertion off set, and failure to adequately inform Ms. Beckinsale of what stunts she was expected to perform until often the moment she had to perform it,' the complaint read. The actress also alleges that although she raised her concerns repeatedly, the producers put her " in harm's way" after they "continued to recklessly and intentionally forge ahead with unsafe filming conditions, forgoing safety to maintain profit margins." Along with several reach-outs from Beckinsale's team about their concerns with the set, her agent, Shani Rosenzweig, allegedly emailed Zois, saying, "No one is actually taking real action to put a plan in place to fix this situation so it never happens again… [Ms. Beckinsale] keeps showing up to set for her call time and everyone around her has been made aware it's going to be a 15 hour [or more] day except for her.' Rosenzweig then demanded immediate action to address the unsafe conditions. "If you're trying to kill a person, you're doing a great job,' she wrote to Zois, after asking him to explain his plans to remedy the situation. The complaint alleges Zois responded and agreed to shorten the actress' 'unsustainable' work days, saying, "I don't know what else to say other than you're right.' Despite Zois' response, Beckinsale's attorneys alleged she still worked 15-hour days, was tasked to 'perform dangerous action sequences, without pre-clearing or pre-training,' and the "set conditions continued to be dangerous.' As a result of the alleged negligence and "conscious and reckless decisions, Ms. Beckinsale suffered further injury, including aggravation and exacerbation of her existing injuries, which was entirely avoidable," per the complaint. Trump both booed and cheered attending Les Misérables at Kennedy Center
President Donald Trump was greeted with boos, as well as cheers, and chants of 'USA!' as he took his seat for the opening night of Les Misérables at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday. It's the first time Trump has attended a show at the venue since he fired the Kennedy Center's leadership, putting MAGA loyalist Richard Grenell in charge of the famed performing arts institution and naming himself chairman of the board. He promised to scrap 'woke' programming that aligned with what he called leftist ideology, which includes drag shows and 'anti-American propaganda,' the president wrote on Truth Social. The move upset some of the center's patrons and performers, and it was reported that several cast members planned to skip the show in protest of his attendance on Wednesday. When one group of ticket holders found out that Trump, Vance and their wives, Melania and Usha, would be in attendance, they donated their tickets to a group of drag performers, according to Qommittee, as reported by Houston Public Media. Videos posted on social media show the drag performers being cheered before Trump arrived. Other videos showed the president taking his seat to a combination of boos and cheers from the audience. When Trump walked the red carpet with first lady Melania Trump ahead of the show, he said he was not bothered by the reported boycott. 'I couldn't care less, honestly, I couldn't,' Trump said. 'All I do is run the country well. The economic numbers you saw them today, they're setting records. We took $88 billion in tariffs in two months, far beyond what anybody expected. There's no inflation. People are happy. People are wealthy. The country is getting back to strength again. That's what I care about.' Trump also spoke about his plans for the Kennedy Center, whose board he replaced with loyalists, some of whom were in attendance Wednesday, including Usha Vance, Attorney General Pam Bondi and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. 'We want to bring it back, and we want to bring it back better than ever,' Trump said from the red carpet. 'As you know it needs a little help from the standpoint of age and fitness, but it's going to be fantastic.' Trump has previously proclaimed his love for Les Misérables, telling Fox News: 'I love the songs; I love the play. I think it's great.' He has played the musical's rebellion anthem, 'Do You Here the People Sing?' at past events and rallies. The story revolves around revolution in France, and has been a massive smash for decades. Trump also suggested that 'we may extend' the show's run. Currently, Les Misérables is slated to run at the Kennedy Center through July 13. The political drama at the center comes just two months after audience members booed the Vances and they took their upper-level seats at the National Symphony Orchestra. Back in 2016, incoming vice president Mike Pence was booed when he attended a production of Hamilton with his family. Pence acknowledged that he heard 'a few boos" and "some cheers" and told his kids at the time, 'that's what freedom sounds like.' The ethnically diverse cast of the popular and sold-out musical, which tells the story of America's Founding Fathers, asked Pence not to leave the venue before he listened to what they wanted to say – which was that people were worried that Trump would 'not protect them.' While Trump demanded an apology from the cast at the time and called the show "overrated", Pence told Fox News at the time that he, his daughter and cousins "really enjoyed the show".
