CCI buys 100 lakh bales cotton at minimum support price

The Hindu4 hours ago

The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has purchased close to 100 lakh bales at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) from farmers in the current cotton season and has sold 35 lakh bales in the market.
Lalit Kumar Gupta, the CCI chairman and Managing Director, told The Hindu on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) that the CCI opened more than 500 centres in the cotton-growing areas since the beginning of the season in October 2024.
'The demand for cotton is not much from the textile mills, and if the current market situation persists, the CCI may purchase more cotton at MSP next season,' he said.
Official sources said the outgo for CCI this year for the MSP operations was ₹37,500 crores. With 8 % increase in the MSP for the next cotton season (October 2025-September 2026), the outgo will be higher if the CCI buys more cotton from the farmers at MSP.
Meanwhile, cotton imports saw a 133 % jump last month compared with last May and a 131 % increase in value in April-May 2025 compared with the same period last year.
Nishant Asher, secretary of the Indian Cotton Federation, said International cotton is almost 8 % cheaper than Indian cotton. With the 11% import duty, Indian spinners are getting cotton from other countries at 1%-2% lower prices. However, they are unable to compete in the international market. The import duty is a major deterrent for the competitiveness of the Indian textile industry, he said.

PM Modi's Zagreb Trip Marks A Diplomatic Milestone For India-Croatia Ties, Why It Matters

Last Updated: PM Modi's Croatia visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations, focusing on trade, defense, culture, and academic exchanges Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Croatia on Wednesday, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Central and Southeast European nation. With a population of around 3.8 million, Croatia is a member of both the European Union and NATO. The visit is being seen as a significant milestone in bilateral relations, underlining India's deepening engagement with Europe. PM Modi will travel to Croatia at the invitation of Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković. During his visit, he is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Plenković and also meet Croatian President Zoran Milanović. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the visit reflects India's commitment to further strengthening its partnerships with European nations. The two leaders had earlier met on the sidelines of the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow in November 2021 and at the India-EU leaders' meeting in May 2021. Trade & Investments Bilateral trade between India and Croatia currently stands at USD 300 million. Indian investments in Croatia amount to USD 48 million, while Croatian investments in India stand at around USD 6 million, as per the MEA. Croatian companies such as Infobip, Končar, and Altpro are active in India, while Indian companies like Infosys, Cipla, and Orient Green Power have established operations in Croatia. The two countries have also been expanding cooperation in innovation and startups. The India-Croatia Startup Bridge was launched in December 2021, and a 50-day India-Croatia Startup Challenge was organised in April 2022. Cultural & People-To-People Ties Cultural and people-to-people ties between India and Croatia are long-standing and diverse. Around 17,200 Indian nationals currently reside in Croatia. Historical connections can be traced back to the 16th century, with the Church of São Braz in Goa reportedly built by Croatians in 1563. Croatian Indologist Ivan Filip Vezdin is credited with publishing the first Sanskrit grammar in 1790, and a commemorative plaque in his honour was unveiled in Thiruvananthapuram in 1999. In 2024, Croatia celebrated International Yoga Day with 65 events held across the country, underscoring the growing interest in Indian culture. Tourism is another area of cooperation, with an MoU signed between India's Ministry of Tourism and its Croatian counterpart in 2019. Sports has also emerged as an important area of collaboration. In 2019, Croatian football legend Igor Štimac was appointed head coach of the Indian national football team. A separate MoU was signed between India's Sports Authority of India and the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Zagreb, further strengthening ties in sports education and training. Academic exchanges have contributed significantly to building stronger relations. In 2019, an MoU was signed to establish an ICCR Sanskrit Chair at the University of Zagreb, which has maintained a Department of Indology for more than six decades. Various academic partnerships and exchanges have been launched to enhance cooperation in education and research, creating deeper people-to-people connections between the two nations. Big Breakthrough In India-Canada Ties, Months After Diplomatic Fallout

Ottawa: India and Canada agreed on Tuesday to reinstate ambassadors to each other's capitals, months after the bitter diplomatic fallout between New Delhi and Ottawa. The breakthrough came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Canada's Kananaskis. The relations between the two countries deteriorated last year after Carney's predecessor, Justin Trudeau, publicly accused India of being involved in the assassination of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil, an allegation India categorically denied. Following this, New Delhi and Ottawa expelled the Indian ambassador. Now Canada's new leader, Carney, who took office in March, invited PM Modi to the Canadian Rockies as a guest at the summit of the G7 major economies. The two leaders held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the summit and agreed that both countries would name new high commissioners, as ambassadors are known between Commonwealth nations. The two leaders made the decision "with a view to returning to regular services to citizens and businesses in both countries," the Canadian PM Carney's office said in a statement. Carney said it was a "great honour" to welcome Modi to the G7 summit and hoped to work with India on "the issues that we look to tackle together, from energy security... the future of artificial intelligence, to the fight that we have against transnational repression and against terrorism." PM Modi also reassured that both Canada and India were "dedicated to democratic values." "The relationship between India and Canada is very important in many ways," PM Modi said as he congratulated Carney on guiding his Liberal Party to an election victory. "I am confident that and Canada will work together to make progress in many areas." India-Canada Relations The row over Nijjar's Killing had severely impeded diplomatic services between India and Canada, which traded $9 billion in 2023 and have close cultural ties due to the vast Indian diaspora in Canada, home to the largest Sikh population outside India. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen who advocated for an independent Sikh state called Khalistan, was shot dead in the parking lot of a Sikh temple in British Columbia in 2023. Former Prime Minister Trudeau accused India of direct involvement. India denied involvement in the killing and said Canada should take more action against violent advocates for Khalistan.
