Craig Bellamy wants Wales to ‘honour the shirt' by not swapping with opposition
Craig Bellamy has told his Wales players to 'honour the shirt' and not swap jerseys with Kevin De Bruyne and company after their World Cup qualifier in Belgium.
Wales resume their bid to reach the 2026 World Cup finals this week with a double header at home to Liechtenstein and away to star-studded Belgium.
Taking on the Red Devils in their Brussels backyard is Wales' biggest test in Group J, but boss Bellamy believes the culture and mentality fostered since his appointment last July and the eight-game unbeaten run that has followed will stand Wales in good stead.
Bellamy insists Wales should not be considered underdogs – 'small footballing nations don't expect to qualify for World Cups, and we do' – and keeping hold of the jersey after the final whistle is among the pillars of his philosophy.
'You have to honour your shirt,' said Bellamy. 'The only time you give it up is when you lose your place and someone else takes it, but you've left it in a good place.
'That's a no-brainer to me and I believe the players love that as well.
'Our shirt is the most important shirt in football. We don't give that away, you can't give it away.'
Asked if not swapping shirts extended to Belgian midfield maestro De Bruyne, one of the Premier League's all-time greats at Manchester City, Bellamy replied: 'I don't think it is even worth having a conversation about.
'I don't need to answer that question. It's not going to happen.
'If I'm an aspiring young player then I want that (Wales) shirt. I see ours as the most important shirt, nobody else's.'
Wales opened their World Cup qualifying campaign in March with a 3-1 home victory over Kazakhstan and a 1-1 draw in North Macedonia.
David Brooks equalised with virtually the last kick in Skopje to protect Bellamy's unbeaten record after Wales won promotion to the top tier of the Nations League in the autumn.

Bellamy draws parallels with basic habits on the football field to a 1980s Hollywood martial arts drama success at the box office.
'Have you ever watched The Karate Kid?' said Bellamy.
'Does he do karate straight away? No – it's Mr Miyagi who decides.
'It's wax on, wax off. He paints the fence. He teaches him all these types of rules before he can do karate, so that he has the disciplines.
'It's about basics, habits. If you don't have that intensity without the ball, if your body language is poor and you're waving your hands, it's the wrong team for you. This is not your team.'

Jeremie Frimpong's response to career ambitions shows reason he joined Liverpool
Jeremie Frimpong completed his £29.5million move to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen last week, with the Dutchman now on his way to fulfilling his dreams of reaching the pinnacle of football Jeremie Frimpong once voiced his career ambitions as a teenager, showing why he chose to join Liverpool and how he has become a top player in recent years. The Reds completed their signing of the wing-back from Bayer Leverkusen last week after activating his £29.5million buyout clause. The Netherlands international penned a five-year contract with the newly-crowned Premier League champions. He is seen as the successor to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was unveiled as a Real Madrid player just hours before Frimpong's announcement, while also providing competition at right-back for Conor Bradley. Under the guidance of fellow countryman Arne Slot, the 24-year-old will look to reach new heights after being named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season twice. Frimpong became a standout player while playing a pivotal role in Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen team, achieving an unbeaten domestic double in 2023/24 where he scored 14 goals and provided 12 assists in 47 matches. His move to Anfield marks a return to English football after leaving Manchester City six years ago, having joined the Etihad side at the age of 10 but failed to break into the first team. He even acknowledged looking up to Van Dijk, his compatriot and Liverpool captain, during his time at Celtic. Frimpong said at the time: 'Look at Virgil van Dijk. There's the example. Played for Celtic; four years later, he nearly wins the Ballon d'Or at Liverpool. He was so close. So can I be the best player there is? Yeah, I think I can be.' Upon joining Liverpool, Frimpong told 'It (the transfer) went quite easy. Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer. 'For me, it was like, 'Whatever you guys do, just get this done.' [Speaking to] my agents, 'Just get this done.' Liverpool fans, I'm going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate. Tottenham chief steps down as Ange Postecoglou shares defiant message on future
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is expected to make a decision over whether to sack Ange Postecoglou this week but another key figure at the club has announced her exit Tottenham have confirmed that Donna-Maria Cullen has stepped down from her role as a non-executive director. The news comes at the start of a week where the club are expected to make a decision on whether to sack Ange Postecoglou. Spurs supremo Daniel Levy will make the final call on Postecoglou. Fans want the 59-year-old to stay after winning the club's first major trophy in 17 years in last month's Europa League final, but the former Celtic chief could yet pay the price for an abysmal Premier League campaign, with Spurs finishing 17th. An official announcement on Postecoglou's future is expected soon. But Cullen's departure was officially announced by the club on Monday morning. She said in a statement: 'This has been such a hard decision to make. The Club has been my life for the past three decades. I have had the privilege of working with Daniel, whose vision and energy has driven the Club forward, and so many talented and wonderful colleagues. 'It has been quite some journey, starting at White Hart Lane, with a brief stay at Wembley and finally our new home - amazing memories home and away. Ending this season with the Europa League Trophy was a dream come true. 'The time is now right for me to gather more time for myself and my family, whom I thank for all their support over the years. I shall spend the coming months ensuring there is a smooth handover with my staff. Thank you all. I wish everyone at the Club all the success in the world.' Levy thanked Cullen for her "immense contribution" to Tottenham over such a significant period and paid tribute to the work she had done in terms of the environment and diversity. Postecoglou, though, stressed once again that he is planning for the future - and more success - with Spurs in a new documentary which hit the airwaves in Australia on Sunday. 'I didn't want us to just enjoy the moment,' he revealed to the Australian Story when he was asked about his tease over 'season three' at Spurs' Europa League victory parade. 'I also wanted us to think about what's next, you know - don't settle for this. We've got a taste of it now. My players have got a taste for it. The club's got a taste for it. Well, let's make sure we're back here again.'
