‘Maybe people see Edward Hopper, or a spaceship, or something else': Martin James Burton's best phone photo

The Guardian29-03-2025

While in Toronto on a work shoot, Martin James Burton decided to take the opportunity to visit the Art Gallery of Ontario. The photojournalist, who is based in Lewes, East Sussex, England, had some lunch before heading in to see the art. While there he happened upon these three strangers. 'The people in the picture are sitting waiting either for nothing to happen or for something to happen. There is a feeling of the surreal to it and an odd sense of anticipation,' Burton says. 'The man with his head turned towards you draws you in, and the huge bright, blank screen is like a giant softbox lighting the subjects perfectly.'

Burton remembers his excitement at taking the shot: he immediately knew that he had captured something unusual. He also saw a resemblance to the painting Nighthawks, by American artist Edward Hopper, which portrays four people in a downtown diner at night. 'I've always thought that photography has its own individual place in art, but when a photograph resembles a particular painting or style, it may give it an extra kudos – particularly if it's not preconceived,' he says.
Burton is happy, though, for others to interpret the image as they wish. 'Maybe they see Hopper, or a spaceship, or maybe they see something else. It's up to the viewer to make of it what they will.'

Flight attendant explains why you should never swap seats on a flight

TikTok video creator and flight attendant Leanna Coy explained why she doesn't like to switch seats whens she is flying as a passenger, arguing that doing so is risky business A flight attendant has warned that seat switchers on planes are risking it all. Leanna Coy recently published a TikTok video titled ' Why you shouldn't switch seats on the plane' that explains exactly that. The commonly touted reason flight attendants typically tell off-seat switchers is that the plane's boarding plan is designed to put an even number of passengers on each side of the plane. ‌ Too many on one side, and the aircraft can be a little trickier for the pilot to fly. ‌ However, Leanna Coy has a whole different reason. The American flight attendant was recently asked to switch seats with a passenger on a United Airlines flight. "Normally, I am absolutely 100 per cent against changing seats. Your lack of planning should not constitute me having to move," Leanna explained. However, on this occasion, the flight attendant couldn't think of a good reason not to swap, so she obliged. She immediately began to have doubts about her decision. "I'm already on edge about it," she said. According to Leanna, if the person you've switched with does anything to "act up" on the plane, the behaviour would be associated with her seat number. That means any breach of the aircraft's rules, such as vaping in the bathroom or throwing snacks at fellow passengers, could wrongly be pinned on her. Leanna argued that such a thought was not as far-fetched as one might think. "I see what goes down on the plane. If this lady decides to go smoke in the bathroom or whatever, that could come back to me," the world-weary flight attendant explained. ‌ "I realised I'm flying United. If you know anything about United's service, if you want to buy drinks or anything, you have to put your card onto the app ahead of time, which I've done before." This means that the passenger who swapped with Leanna may be able to access her card to pay for items. The off-duty cabin crew member asked one of her colleagues if that was indeed the case, and they confirmed that it was. "'Now, do I think this lady was trying to scam me out of money on my card? No. But that's just something to be aware of. I fully support you if you don't want to switch seats. You are entitled to the seat that you chose," Leanna said. It is not a rare occurrence for chaos to break out on a flight or for passengers to indulge in a bit of bad behaviour. At the end of last year, a passenger caused chaos after allegedly attempting to open the emergency door mid-flight. The incident took place on a Copa Airlines flight on Tuesday night. Footage of the incident shows a man being restrained in a headlock while a crew member tried to attach plastic handcuffs to his wrists. Two passengers – Marcelo Ribeiro and Everaldo Torres – reportedly helped to restrain the man, according to local reports. Marcelo attempted to reason with the passenger when he noticed him trying to open the door, which ignited a brawl.

Love Island fans 'rumble' first Casa Amor bombshell - and it's a past Islander

Love Island 2025 viewers are convinced they know the first name to be confirmed for this year's Casa Amor before the twist has even been confirmed on the ITV2 series Viewers think they already know which former Love Island star is set to enter the famous second villa, Casa Amor. During the series and just as the couples have usually formed strong bonds, the series airs a second villa twist with new arrivals. For a few days the original boys and girls are split up in separate villas, with a group of new boys and girls arriving to cause drama. ‌ The twist has often led to unexpected betrayals, shock exits and new couples. Ahead of the show confirming if it will air this year or not, fans think they already know someone who will enter as part of the shake-up. ‌ Sophie Lee was axed from the show on Tuesday night in a brutal dumping, after her partner Harry was stolen by Shakira. Sophie's exit left fans stunned with many gutted to see her go so early on. But some viewers are now convinced her time on the show isn't over. With a recent series seeing a dumped girl return to the villa for Casa Amor, viewers are now speculating Sophie will be back on the show in a matter of weeks, as a bombshell in the second villa. Taking to X, fans guessed the twist would happen with one fan writing: "I reckon Sophie will re-enter the villa as a bombshell by the end of next week at the latest or she will re-enter in Casa Amor." Another said: "Dw Sophie you'll be back in 4 weeks for Casa Amor." A third viewer begged: "Nah bring Sophie back for Casa Amor she deserves a chance." A fourth fan agreed: "Bring her back for casa amor!!" as a fifth viewer posted: "Gutted for her and bring back Sophie as a bombshell or Casa Amor." The comments kept on coming with one reading: "They better bring Sophie back as a Casa bombshell. Justice for Sophie." Another said: "BRING SOPHIE BACK FOR CASA AMOR!" ‌ It comes after Sophie was axed from the show in the latest episode. Despite not initially being at risk of an early exit, the motivational speaker and author was abruptly booted out of the villa after her man Harry was chosen by newly single Shakira. It was Shakira who had been told by host Maya Jama in the previous episode that she could be leaving within hours. Shakira had just 24 hours to woo another man, after her partner Ben was stolen by American bombshell Toni. ‌ Blu, Conor and Harry all chose to opt for Shakira, knowing full well she'd only be able to pick one of them. It wasn't an easy choice, more so because she knew, as clarified by Maya, that the girl left single would be going home instead of her. With the three boys standing, Shakira's fate was sealed. It was then Helena, Alima and Sophie who were at risk. It came down to Shakira choosing out of the three boys, with some encouragement from Maya. Maya urged the Islander to remember why she was here, no doubt trying to lessen her panic over sending a girl home but also so she would make the right choice. With that, Shakira named Harry as the man she wanted to steal. Sophie was immediately dumped from the villa as a result, as Maya confirmed she was now single and would be leaving the show.

Love Island fans say same thing after 'chaotic' teaser as 'drama' hits villa

Love Island 2025 viewers were left excited about Wednesday's episode of the ITV2 series after a tomorrow night teaser revealed things get steamy and no doubt dramatic It looks like Love Island is heating up just days in, as following the first exit of the series there's two new bombshells. Not only that but a tomorrow night teaser hinted at new drama, new romance and plenty of "chaos". Viewers watching the clip narrated by Iain Stirling at the end of Tuesday's episode were thrilled, saying "we're so back". ‌ Viewers are now excited to see Wednesday's visit to the villa, after host Maya Jama returned to the famous compound in the latest episode to send Sophie Lee packing. There's two new boys on the way, and soon a drinking game stirs things up. ‌ There seems to be a game of dares or something similar, and soon enough the Islanders are locking lips with people they are not currently paired up with. There's gasps, unimpressed faces and plenty of carnage judging by a short clip that aired. Viewers couldn't wait to see the scenes in full, taking to X to share their excitement. It seems Megan gets cosy with someone, leaving her partner Tommy not too happy just a day on from them sharing a kiss. Harry also seems bothered about something, while Alima shares a kiss with a bombshell - leaving fans hoping she may get with a new man after things became awkward with Blu. With Blu expressing an interest in Shakira on Tuesday, fans are hoping he'll be ditched very soon. As for the teaser clip for Wednesday, fans said they were ready for the "drama" and "chaos". One viewer posted: "Tomorrow's episode is looking chaotic." Another said: "We are so back," as a third added: "ROLL ON TOMORROW NIGHT!!!!!!!" A fourth fan posted: "Finally some good looking guys and some drama, tomorrow is looking good," while another wrote: "That tomorrow night omds. Yeah this season is going to be a top one." ‌ Another comment read: "TOMORROW NIGHT LOOKING GOOODDDD." It comes after Sophie was axed from the show in the latest episode. As the 22 year old, who works in marketing, got grafting she soon had to choose a man to pair up with. ‌ But there was a catch, and the boys had to agree to couple up with her. As the time came on Tuesday night, host Maya was back in the villa ready for the proceedings. She asked the boys if any of them wanted to ditch their current girl for Shakira, meaning their partners would be at risk of being dumped. Three boys stood up, leaving their current girls rattled. Blu, Conor and Harry all chose to opt for Shakira, knowing full well she'd only be able to pick one of them. It wasn't an easy choice, more so because she knew, as clarified by Maya, that the girl left single would be going home instead of her. ‌ With the three boys standing, Shakira's fate was sealed.
