Ilya Sorokin makes Bo Horvat's goal stand up as Islanders blank Devils
Bo Horvat scored late in the second period and Ilya Sorokin made 25 saves and the
New York Islanders
topped the
New Jersey Devils
1-0 on Sunday.
Horvat intercepted an attempted pass by Devils forward Timo Meier and fired a shot past goalie Jacob Markstrom with 57 seconds left in the middle period for his 28th goal this season. The Islanders held on as Sorokin improved to 30-23-6 with his fourth shutout this season and the 22nd of his career.
This is the second time the 29-year-old Russian netminder has reached the 30-win mark in his five-year NHL career.
The Islanders snapped a three-game losing streak by winning
a day after they were eliminated from postseason contention with a shootout loss at Philadelphia
. New York made the playoffs the past two seasons, losing to Carolina both times in the first round.
This was the ninth time the Devils were blanked this season.
Devils captain Nico Hischier had a golden opportunity to tie the game in the waning second but shot the puck wide.
New Jersey is heading to the postseason for the second time in three years. The Devils will face the Carolina Hurricanes in the opening round. New Jersey defeated the Rangers in seven games in the opening round two years ago, then lost to Carolina in the second round.
Markstrom made 21 saves for the Devils.

Islanders
: improved to 16-17-7 on the road with their first away win since March 18.
Sorokin, who hadn't played
since allowing Alexander Ovechkin's record-breaking 895th goal last Sunday at UBS Arena

The Islanders are 19-5-6 when scoring first and 15-29-6 when allowing the opening goal.

2025 Club World Cup odds: Why backing Xabi Alonso's Real Madrid to pip PSG makes sense

The FIFA Club World Cup is here and, if you're like us, well, you don't know what to make of it. But the fact of the matter is, it's a summer football tournament featuring some of the best teams across the globe. Advertisement If you plan on strapping yourself to the sofa from June 14 to July 13, it's probably worth having a gander at the betting markets. Unlike the domestic season, where every team wants to claim silverware, there's probably going to be some questionable levels of motivation to consider when placing wagers. A club like Real Madrid — the outright betting favourites — should have no problem dispatching the Al-Hilals of the world, but will they care enough to do so? Will Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and the rest of the chasing pack worry about protecting players? Or will they brush aside the concerns all in the name of winning another trophy? We'll dive into the top five Club World Cup winner favourites and see if we can suss out which of the teams will back up their odds in a month's time. Brett Koremenos: After a disappointing season by the club's lofty standards, Los Blancos have all the motivation in the world to carve a path to New Jersey and beyond. Xabi Alonso's arrival also adds an element of intrigue. Presumably, there will be a clear directive from the new boss to utilise these games to implement his tactics and kick off his tenure with a signature win. On the pitch, the acquisition of Trent Alexander-Arnold could be a game-changer. Madrid's passing was a key issue last season, and Alexander-Arnold has already proven at Liverpool that he's a ball-progressing, chance-creation machine. He also fills a major hole at right back. Madrid should be a dominant force this season with him in the side. Throw in their incentive to purge a plunderless Champions League campaign from the collective mind and 4/1 odds seem rather tempting. Sam Tighe: Expect PSG's immense swagger and confidence in possession to hit the accelerator now they've been crowned European champions. They're better than everyone else, they know it, and now they have the proof. The earlier question of how bothered this team will be about this tournament, though, is very fair. Of all the UEFA representatives, PSG could justifiably be the least interested. They're probably the only side present who don't need the riches that winning it would bring, and also potentially knackered. They won the treble, then seven of their first-choice players played in the UEFA Nations League finals. Advertisement Is there any chance these guys could get a moment to, you know, celebrate their incredible achievements? They're rightly priced as a strong contender to win because they're the best team in the world. But in terms of motivation, they'll be lightyears behind Real Madrid, which seems to be a key factor for the bookmakers. Koremenos: Unlike Madrid, City's transfer additions lead to more questions than answers. Joško Gvardiol would be an amazing player at any position, but he was a world-destroying force as a left-back. Yet Rayan Aït-Nouri has been brought into the fold. Pep Guardiola also spent half of last season trying to mend a shattered defence — and he succeeded by the end of the season. This makes it all the more puzzling that he signed two midfielders, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki, (maybe they got a deal on Rayans?) who contribute nothing to the defence. With Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker and Jack Grealish all on their way out the door, this team feels like a major work in progress. Not only are 11/2 odds for City intriguingly low, but there's also a real chance with all these moving pieces that we see some shocking results. Guardiola may also view this as an opportunity to tinker with his new toys rather than just trying to churn out results. Tighe: Well, Harry Kane's excited. That much we can confirm. He has a fair point about supposed inaugural tournaments carrying a 'unique' flavour, and as a natural goalscorer, will probably be hell-bent on being crowned the first Club World Cup Golden Boot winner. If he achieves that, Bayern will inevitably have gone far — unless of course he scores nine against Auckland City, then none against anyone else. Die Rekordmeister have paid some nominal fees to bring two summer signings — Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof — into the fold early, so that they can play in the United States. The former should prove to be immediately important, as Bayern's centre-backs corps is very injured and in need of help. Tighe: Chelsea round off the top five favourites, pipping the likes of Atlético Madrid (12/1) and Champions League finalists Inter (14/1), plus every non-UEFA representative. At first glance that seems generous to the Blues, but they did win five of their last six Premier League games to secure a top-five berth. Advertisement They're also adding a lot of fresh energy to the squad: Dário Essugo, Liam Delap and Mamadou Sarr are all new signings who will take part in the tournament. Meanwhile, Andrey Santos and Mike Penders, who spent the 2024-25 season out on loan, will also be added to the pile. That creates a dynamic in which a fair chunk of Chelsea's squad will be raring to go and eager to impress — a ripple effect that could result in the rest raising their game. FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- When he is at the top of his game, New York Jets All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner is the best in the league. Advertisement The former fourth overall pick was the first defensive back in NFL history to be named a first-team All-Pro in his first two seasons. After a strong start to his career, though, Gardner struggled last season. He was still a Pro Bowl player but was penalized more for his aggressive style and struggled to tackle throughout the 2024 campaign. Under a new coaching staff, Gardner's expectations are back to where they were after 2023. Defensive coordinator Steve Wilks believes he can get the most out of their new star. "It's so many things that I feel like Sauce can do," Wilks said. "Again, the word consistent. He's been a Pro Bowl consistent can he be to take it to another level? Advertisement "And that's one of the things that I challenged him on day one when we had our conversation." It's important to remember that Gardner's worse season was still pretty damn good compared to other players in his position. If he can reduce the penalties and improve his tackling, Gardner should be expected to return to his All-Pro status. According to Wilks, that is precisely what the team expects out of him. And what Gardner expects out of himself. Few cornerbacks in the NFL have the kind of frame that Gardner is working with. Wilks commented about that on Wednesday as part of why consistency is such a focus for the All-Pro this year.
