16 arrested in Assam for illegal cattle slaughter during Eid
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that 16 individuals have been arrested across the state in connection with incidents of alleged illegal cattle slaughter during Eid-ul-Zuha celebrations.
CM Sarma stated that cattle remains were recovered from various locations in Assam, with five unauthorised slaughter sites identified in the Barak Valley. These were located in Gumrah, Silchar, and Lakhipur in Cachar district, and Badarpur and Banga in Karimganj district.
The arrests include nine people from Cachar and seven from Sribhumi. Additional reports cited the discovery of cattle parts in areas including Cotton University in Kamrup (Metro), Dhubri, Hojai, and Bagargool in Sribhumi.
"While our Constitution guarantees the right to religious freedom, it equally upholds the rule of law and public order," CM Sarma wrote on social media platform X.
"Disturbing incidents of illegal cattle slaughter and recovery of cattle parts were reported from multiple locations across Assam."
CM Sarma emphasised that the state is committed to preserving communal harmony, but warned that violations of the law, regardless of religious background, would invite strict action.
Under the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, cattle slaughter is prohibited in areas where Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs form a majority, and within five kilometres of temples or Vaishnavite monasteries (satras).
While beef consumption is not illegal, the Act imposes stringent restrictions on slaughter and sale.
Tensions flared in Hojai on Sunday, following claims that meat pieces were found in Hindu residential areas on Saturday night.
In response, members of the Hindu community staged a road blockade in the Barpukhuri area.
A counter-protest by Muslims occurred in Bhuyanpatty, leading to a confrontation with police. Authorities used mild force to disperse the crowd, a senior police official said.
"The situation is now under control, with additional paramilitary forces deployed. We are closely monitoring developments," the official added.
Meanwhile, protests continue in Barpukhuri, where efforts are ongoing to negotiate with demonstrators. Residents in Hojai allege that meat was deliberately thrown into their premises, though police have not confirmed these claims.
In Guwahati, a piece of meat was reportedly found wrapped in polythene near the Cotton University campus.
Police have collected the sample for forensic testing. A similar incident was reported in Nalia, Dhubri district, where suspected meat pieces were discovered near a temple.
Authorities said the material was also sent for examination and that the situation in the area remains peaceful.

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will probe the murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty by a group of assailants in Mangaluru, Karnataka, last month, official sources said on Sunday. The Union Home Ministry has asked the federal anti-terror agency to probe the case related to the "targeted killing" of Shetty "with the intention to create terror in the minds of people", they said. Shetty was killed at Kinnipadavu in Bajpe on the outskirts of Mangaluru on May 1. He was travelling in a vehicle with his associates when five-six assailants, who came in a car and a pick-up vehicle, intercepted him. The assailants attacked Shetty with sharp weapons, causing grievous injuries. He was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries The gruesome attack was captured on a CCTV camera, which showed the assailants attacking him with machetes and swords. Shetty was reportedly associated with various local Hindutva groups and had several cases registered against him, including for assault, murder and unlawful assembly, according to the local police. Karnataka Police on June 3 arrested Abdul Razak (59), a resident of Mangaluru, for allegedly conspiring and sheltering the prime accused in Shetty's murder case. The total number of arrests made in this case stood at 16, police said. According to police, Razak is the father of Mohammed Muzammil, one of the key accused, and the father-in-law of Nausad Vamanjoor alias Chotte Nausad, another suspect in the case. He allegedly conspired with them and others at his residence to plan the murder and later helped the accused evade arrest, according to the police. Kerala Governor takes dig at CPI over 'Bharat Mata' issue
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar criticised CPI, the second largest party in ruling LDF, that hoisted national flags and raised 'Bharat Mata ki jai' slogans as a mark of protest against the use of Bharat Mata portrait at Raj Bhavan during an environment day event. In an apparent reference to the CPI campaign but without naming them, Arlekar, at an event here said, "Those who never thought of 'Bharat Mata' are saying 'Bharat Mata ki jai'. That is a good contribution. I appreciate that." At the same time, the Governor said that 'Bharat Mata' cannot be an issue for debate. "It cannot be an issue for discussion. How can it be? 'Bharat Mata' is above everything and beyond everything," he said. Arekar further said that while everyone may have their different thoughts and ideologies, "we are all brothers and sisters, that particular thing has to be there in our minds". On the other hand, CPI state secretary M V Govindan said that there is no concept of 'Bharat Mata' as it is not there in the Constitution. Meanwhile, the CPI said it was currently not going to have a discussion with its ally CPI on the issue. Subsequently, the CPI had announced that it would hoist the national flag, which is the symbol of Bharat Mata, at all its branches on Saturday and would plant saplings in front of it as a mark of protest against the Governor's stand.
